Okay, so I’m a 17 year old girl and I committed a mortal sin. It weighed me down for a long time, and I forgot about it until recently when I committed the sin again. I felt so ashamed and unloveable that today, I went to confession at my local Catholic Church. I expected there to be a screen inside the reconciliation room to confess anonymously, but instead there were two chairs facing each other, and on top of that, I’m very aquainted the priest who was in the room. I confessed some of my sins, but couldn’t muster the courage to confess my mortal sin. I got so worked up and, at one point during the confession, even broke down crying at the thought of what I’d done, so I ended up keeping the sin to myself. Had there been a screen, I definitely could’ve confessed, but I just couldn’t look him in the eye - into the eyes of someone I know - and admit that awful thing I did. I know his absolving me is invalid because I deliberately withheld that mortal sin, and that even withholding a sin is a sin in itself. What I’ve done is eating away at me and I feel crippling shame over it. I’ve even spent hours holding my bible to my chest and sobbing for god to forgive me. If I go to reconciliation again and confess my mortal sin and the withholding of such, can I be absolved? Will god forgive me? Will he love me again if I make such amends?
