I Don’t Like Making The Sign of the Cross

I love coincidences. Just a couple days after posting my comment in #20, I ran across this in the 4th Catechetical Lecture of St. Cyrill of Jerusalem:
  1. Let us, therefore, not be ashamed of the Cross of Christ; but though another hide it, do thou openly seal it upon thy forehead, that the devils may behold the royal and flee trembling far away. Make then this sign at eating and drinking, at sitting, at lying down, at rising up, at speaking, at walking: in a word, at every act.
D

I was having Thanksgiving dinner with my family one year a few years ago and we sat down and said grace at the end of the blessing I crossed myself and was a little worried that someone would make a snide comment about it but they didn’t say anything so I still do.

None of the apostolic Church made the sign of the cross, nor did they teach it. It came centuries later in the form of a tradition.

Honestly you dont have to. Prayer is just a way to communicate with the lord. I pray even when driving and both hands on the wheel. But if your being lazy then it isnt a good thing. Being lazy for anything is a sin. Laziness is one of the deadly sins. Its not a hard thing to do, its a 2 second thing and if your lazy to do that, its just a sign that if something so minuscule is hard for you to do, I cant imagine your day to day projects, struggles, activities, relationships etc… Im not judging nor saying that you are lazy. But maybe its something to think about or reflect upon and take into consideration. If it is because you are against the belief, so be it. But if it is because your lazy to do so… that isnt a good thing. And if it is so that you make the excuse that you are against it cus of your beliefs only to not do it cus your lazy, then your should take note of what els in your life are you making excuses for and learn how to fux it

Why don’t you like making the Sign of the Cross??? St. Bernadette was known for her majestic Sign of the Cross. She learned how to make the Sign of the Cross by following the gestures of the Blessed Mother at the grotto of Massabiele.

Once, as a novice at Saint-Gildard in Nevers, Bernadette once gently reprimanded a fellow sister who she observed hurriedly signing herself upon entering the chapel. Bernadette said to her, “You make the sign of the cross badly. You must see to that, for it is important to make it well.” Take a lesson from this great Saint, who knows a thing or two about this subject.

I may be jumping the gun here because I’m Orthodox and not Catholic- but I’ve always thought the sign of the cross was a prayer in and of itself. We also make the sign of the cross much more frequently than you all do. Literally, every time the Trinity is invoked, we cross ourselves…plus other times during Divine Liturgy. It’s- honestly- the easiest and most simply prayer one can resort to at any given moment.

Is that ok?
If we think of prayer as conversation with God, then there can be no hard and fast rules, any more than there would be in speaking with your mother or father. It begins to sound rather silly if we were to say, “Mom, am I speaking to you in the approved manner?” I say this with a smile on my face, of course, because this does sound stiff and formal where it need never be. God wants to hear from us. He’s not looking for the appropriate actions or correct postures before he’ll open his ears. 😀

Sure. The fact that none of the entire 27 N.T. narratives make any mention of it should be a compelling argument. After all, those narratives form the Apostolic thought and spirit. You shouldn’t have fruit without root.

If you are a convert it might take you a while to shake the thought of it ‘not being necessary’ ‘being showy’ or ‘virtue signalling ‘ which are all things I’ve heard from non Dom churches. Use it as a sign that you are proud to be Catholic and it’s a witness to others. I’m still getting Used to it myself and grappling with those ingrained feelings

Sorry, that really proves nothing. They didn’t write about elephants, either, but elephants exist. My point is your very Protestant claim has no evidence to back it up. There are documented sources of the Sign of the Cross (in some fashion) being used as early as the first generation of Christians, however, but that might throw a wrench in someone’s storytelling of their denominational honesty.

I also am a covert. Was received into the church of ’ 18. I am still trying to get to get used to making the sign of the cross.

I am getting used to it I have done it at least twice both times during the holidays the last time was this Christmas day. I do it at work just before I have lunch.

To me it is the other person’s choice not to like it. I do it to show my faith in our Lord and that I am his child and follower .

The physical gesture is accompanied by some words from our baptism. So, it is a reminder to us of our baptism and of our willingness to suffer for our faith, by putting that cross on ourselves. +

I don’t get it. Why this lack of importance given to the Sign of the Cross? What’s the first thing you do at the start of Mass…both forms? Truly, I have never, ever said any prayer without the Sign of the Cross at the beginning and at the end of it! And at the end of Mass the last thing your Priest does is give a final blessing. While the congregation does what? You guessed it!

Hey, I don’t care one way or the other about making the sign of the cross. I used to do it as a young boy. But for what purpose does it serve?.. If i could find a good spiritual reason for practicing it, I would do it in a heartbeat. I feel the same way about holy water when you come into the sanctuary.
