I don't connect with anyone

‘Quiet ‘n’ shy’ doesn’t necessarily mean Asperger’s. Don’t self-diagnose.

God gives us each a distinct personality, and that can’t be changed. It can be tuned one way or another, but a friendly, outgoing, puppy-like person isn’t going to change into quiet and shy, or vice-versa, barring illness or something like that.

There’s really nothing wrong with being the kind of person you were meant to be.

It’s a common feeling so don’t think it’s just you. Often living in a big city with a hectic rhythm makes it hard to develop friendships. Still, if you try to be a bit more outgoing (even a smile and a “hello, how are you?” waiting to hear the reply can do wonders.)

Do you have hobbies or interests? Joining a group with people who have similar interests can open up doors and make it easier to find someone with whom you can connect.

Have a great day!

One of the most useful things I was ever told — was that my shyness came off as being ‘snotty.’

Whoa! That was never my intent! I now sort of force myself to talk and at least smile more so people won’t think me snotty and unapproachable.

I don’t know if there is something deficient in my personality, but it seems I don’t connect with anyone. I don’t remember ever having a best friend, there is no one I can look to for advise, no one I can talk to about my conversion, no one calls me just to talk about how things are going, etc. You get the idea. Anyone have this problem? What do you think is wrong with me?
From a one paragraph question, I really can’t say. I know I’ve been in the same boat. My nickname in middle school was “mute”, and I was so depressed by 7th grade that I pretty much would hid out in my closest and cry everyday. I overall would beat myself up mentally and tell myself that I was stupid for this or that action. I’d go through the entire day in my head and critically evaluate what stupid things I had done that were causing people to reject me. I still have a bit of this habit left in me and often don’t even realize I’m doing it. I used to apoligise and quickly forget what I had been thinking about that made me apoligise. People used to get mad at me because they felt my apoligies didn’t mean anything since I’d so often say “I’m sorry” and not be able to explain to people what I was sorry about. Now I realize its because I ponder the past. I’m still apoligizing for things I did ten years ago.

Whenver I’ve gone to counciling and explained this, I’ve been told it is primarily self esteem and that I tend to hold myself back from people for fear that I’ll do something wrong and eventually get rejected. This seemed confirmed to me because so many times I had started to get close to people, I had so many experiences of getting rejected. But I think with low self esteeme, you kind of try to build your self esteem off of other people’s affirmations. You have this idea in your head of what it looks like to have a friend who cares about you and you look around and don’t see that. The goal ultimately becomes “I need someone who values me that much” but I think in reality it drains people because we pursue friendships more as a way to boost our self esteem. If this person likes me, I’m a good person. If this person rejects me, I’m a bad person. Its ultimately all about us. We’re not looking to be a friend. We’re looking to find our value placed and affirmed in us by another person. A boundary to us can look like a rejection and a failure. If we’re encouraged to break that boundary because “well its just anxiety” than we rub people the wrong way.

That said, I do think I’ve come a long way in building my self esteem. I still have a lot of bad mental habits from it and am so used to living and isolation and especially substituting the internet that its hard for me to get out of the pattern. Its just so much quicker to feel like I’m getting my social fix on the internet and then I still have time to go grocery shopping. I also work from home, so work doesn’t really get me out meeting people. That said, when I worked in the office, I found that I never wanted to spend my breaks with anyone. I wanted to just clear my head. I’m not very good at socializing with people for just 10 minutes unless I know them real well.

How much more do I need to work on my self esteem and how much do I need to just push myself to reach out to people? I’m not exactly sure. But having just gone through being used by a friend of mine who did not respect social boundaries (sort of being in the other person’s shoes this time), I feel like I’ve gained a little insight into how I may have made other people feel. I don’t think I’m as manipulative as my former friend, but I never once wanted to reject her because she just wasn’t interesting. It was because she was so consumed on getting attention for herself and on manipulating me to gain something from me, it was too much. When we were friends, she’d impose herself on me and honestly for me it just felt like I was never hitting her social boundary. Instead she eventually hit mine, complained and then I’d feel bad for putting it up and let her continue on…untill the day that I was ill and she decided it would be rude of me to not allow her to come over (when she came over I had a heart to heart with her and she ended the friendship for two days then begged for it back) Ultimately, She doesn’t care about me. I feel bad that she suffers from low self esteem and bipolar, but a friendship just can’t be based on guilt and pity. I think the primary reason it took me so many years of manipulation to put a great distance between the two of us is because I’ve been that very lonely person. I know what its like and heck I’m still rather isolated.

The thing is that I can’t satisfy her. She’s always hungry. Friends aren’t food to consume.

Really excellent points in your post.

I’m just allergic to the term ‘self-esteem’ because in this secular world, it is often used as a means a monstrous sort of self-worship instead.

No you’re not alone. I have a lot of acquaintances but really my family members are my only true friends. I think part of it goes down to having ADHD and having trouble reading some of the clues people give off. I don’t know. I’m friendly and try to be social but there’s still a deep seeded shyness about me that rears it’s head at times. As a previous poster said all we can really do is try.

I am in the same boat of not having friends. I had some in the past that I felt close to. We would share our problems but it always came to a bad ending. They would do unhealthy behaviours and I would tell them with the intention ‘I am speaking the truth in love’ and they would flee. Or I would do unhealthy behaviours, they were too shy to tell me and finally have enough of me and leave.

The last ‘friend’ I had was a very abusive bully. I would confide in her and then she would cash in on the fact she knew my soft spots to hurt me. When I would try and tell her it hurt, she would blow her lid at me. Very unhealthy but I was alone in a new town and after all, that is exactly how my brother treated me so how do I know it was not normal. ( still have a lot of scars and and resentment to work through)

I have just chalked it up to I have issues and resent God for not sending me the healing I pray for. (Which after writing it does not seems like the best solution).

I constantly flip flop between ‘setting boundaries’ is a healthy friendship to thinking ‘Let it go, no one is perfect’ I don’t know where the healthy line is.

Personally my biggest problem is everyone is last minute. I see a group of guys at work (I am a woman and 15 years older than them so I don’t think it would be a good idea to try to join) get together at the end of the day to see ‘What’s up tonight’. Personally, I wonder how deep of a friednship it is when every new guy is automatically one of the gang the day he joins the office’ I also wonder, do they not have laundry and groceries to do? How can you always be so last minute? I find it inconsiderate for someone to expect me to come running when they call at the last minute. But whenever I walk up to a woman on a Tuesday and say ‘What are you doing this weekend, perhaps we could grab a coffee’ I always hear, ‘I don’t know I want to wait and see’ I find it a brush off. If someone genuninly enjoyed my company, they would be more than willing to book it on the calendar 2 days in advance and keep the commitment. Especially since I would understand they can only see me every 1-2 months. But I guess most people have their own rat race and I don’t make it to the top of the priority list.

And since I am enjoying letting all my pent up garbage out, I will make another point. I recently got back from trip to Europe. I was on a train and I sat beside 2 guys from Spain. One had very good English and he made me laugh histerically, they took out a deck of cards an invited me to play with them. That 1.5 hour train ride was the highlight of my trip. When we got off the train I shook their hand and said ‘nice to meet you’ and went my own way. Mainly because I need more than a good laugh. The guy had a lot of nervous ticks like tapping his fingers all the time (which made me think he would be uncomfortable with deep conversations) and by their conversation they were very last minute (which made me realise he probably couldn’t commit to someone elses schedule). He basically struck me as the type of guy who would never really take a woman seriously. And that again is where I am constantly wondering ‘How much do you let go for a good laugh vs insisting on reliability’

So in a nutshell, I too feel like I have no close connection to anyone. My hope is everyone who reads this thread says a little prayer for all of us

You just touched on one of my pet peeves. Because translated into Human, it really means, “I’m waiting for something BETTER to come along!”

For all of us currently friendless people:
  • In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost.
AVE MARIA, gratia plena, Dominus tecum.
Benedicta tu in mulieribus,
et benedictus fructus ventris tui, Iesus.
Sancta Maria, Mater Dei, ora pro nobis peccatoribus, nunc, et in hora mortis nostrae.
Amen.
:signofcross:

I tend to keep to myself, which leaves me with few friends. Mainly family members.

The sad thing is that when my “acquaintances” are in crunch time or need someone reliable, my name comes up. What good is having all those friends if you can’t count on them?

That is just one of many translations 😉

Some other ones include ‘I will call you if I am bored and no one else is around’ or ‘I don’t like you but I care about my reputations as a nice person so I won’t be honest’ or ‘I like having the chance to turns others down so I will keep this open so I will have the chance to say no again’ or ‘Let me keep you around for when I need something’ or ‘My boyfriend doesn’t give me the security of knowing he will call so I will get my revenge on you and do the same thing’

the list goes on. It tells me right off the bat the person is not reliable and might as well not count on them

To the OP:
Like almost everyone else on this thread, I too have felt your sense of isolation. A few things to keep in mind, however:
  • One good friend is far better than a great number of false ones.
  • Most of the great saints, prophets, sages, etc. have endured solitude or outright loneliness to some extent.
  • The life of the mind and the life of the spirit can really sustain you.
  • This situation won’t last forever. 🙂

To OP,
Code:
Hopefully things are better with you today and until tomorrow. I've realized that you can only be responsible for you what you do not what other people do. The path less traveled is usually the best way to go. I've been having social isolation issues due to my disability and my opposing political views of some church members of the far far right wing political machine, however, I hope that I can eventually find someone out there that isn't like this. Too many ignorant peopl out there that don't care to learn anything from anyone else cause of fear of knowing that they are wrong perhaps. Hell it doesn't matter to people what you are for the most part cause they come with a preconcieved notion and you can only control what you do yourself not what they do. So, there are lots of jerks out there that I constantly see possessed probably Satan himself in flesh in front of me but they don't care about descending points of view.
You can have the potential to lighten up the room like a candle with new ideas just find new ways of presenting your skills and talents out there. Surely there is something you know or do that someone else cannot. For example, I'm not the best english writer in the world. This is the problem in the church to many arrogant prideful people out there thinking they aren't indensable to this world. Ha, laughable really cause they the middle to upper class people are exactly the problem in this world to blur the lines between spiritual and physical importance. The pharacies or scribes if you will to Jesus Christ like murders in flesh haunting us even from the grave of Jesus. Horrid monsters hiding inside our churchs to lurke behind our altars or choirs as if they are innocent. St. Michael's defend us in battle prayer is a good prayer for these cast outs if you ask me. Also, praying a rosary might help ya out by yourself and try to find people of your same interest or look outside of the church for your enjoyment with otyers just be weary of people trying to detract from your faith (e.g. protestants) out there.

Far far right wing political machine?

Is this a new car or maybe a washer-dryer? I’d like to get one…
