Please explain the sin of gluttony.
Does that mean I have to eat less?
Because one plate is already enough for me.
What does gluttony means?

It “MAY” only be an issue if you are 300 pounds overweight.

Read “scrupulous anonymous”.

Three of the seven deadly sins form a group, sharing the characteristic that they indicate over-attachment to things that are not evil in themselves, but are to be enjoyed in moderation.

Avarice: over-attachment to money, wealth, possessions in general

Lust: over-attachment to sex

Gluttony: over-attachment to eating and drinking

Aquinas states that there are 4 ways to eat like a glutton: too soon, too much, too fast, too daintily.

You can be gluttonous about things that are not food, also. If you are out there buying the latest electronic gadget every other week, or way more shoes or video games or records than you could possibly use, then you’re being gluttonous about those items.

Gluttony focused on food gluttony originally because prior to our modern era, there was a limited amount of food available in a certain area for all the people who lived there. If a few rich people were eating more than their share and wasting food, then somebody else probably did not have enough to eat. Back in ancient Rome, rich people would attend banquets with so much food they actually would go to the vomitorium and puke during the meal in order to make room to eat more food.

Nowadays people in developed countries all tend to all have enough food available to eat (those who are “food insecure” often have some issue like drug addiction, inability to get to the store, temporary unemployment etc and there are agencies to help them get food - it’s not a case of there being no food for them), and those who overeat to the point of being morbidly obese often have a medical problem or a mental health problem, it’s not just a matter of being a glutton. So we would do well to look at our possible gluttony with material goods, alcohol and other things.

Temperance
Abstinence prescribes the restraint to be employed in the partaking of food and drink. Obviously the measure of this self-restraint is not constant and invariable. It is different for different persons as well as for different ends in view. The diet of an anchorite would not do for a farm labourer. Abstinence is opposed to the vices of gluttony and drunkenness. The disorder of these is that food and drink are made use of in such wise as to damage instead of benefit the bodily health. Hence gluttony and drunkenness are said to be intrinsically wrong. That does not mean, however, that they are always grievous sins. Gluttony is seldom such; drunkenness is so when it is complete, that is when it destroys the use of reason for the time being.

Please get help from your parents or your priest. You’ve posted multiple posts on the topic of gluttony. You are obsessing about this topic in an unhealthy way.

You need guidance from your pastor, not strangers on the internet.

Even in developing countries, the percent of people who are obese is rising.

Obesity is getting to be a worldwide health concern.

Yes, but much of it is caused by poor diet high in sugar, refined flour, junk food etc, not by overeating.

This is why you routinely see people on public assistance who are very fat. They aren’t sitting around the house eating humongous meals. They’re often even getting good exercise because they have to walk everywhere and they’re chasing their kids around. It’s the type of foods they are eating, like soda, chips, cookies, French fries, cheap white bread, canned food etc that is making them fat. All these foods are cheap and easy for them to get and prepare, while healthy food costs more, takes more time and effort to prepare, and isn’t always available. Especially in women, when this type of eating is coupled with pregnancies, you can end up huge.

There’s also a genetic component, so you frequently see two people eating the same stuff and one is thin and one is fat. My mother lived on coffee and junk food her whole life and was skinny for almost her whole life; at one point she gained about 30 pounds, quickly lost it on a diet and never gained it back. She also lived to be 89 and ate her burgers and fries right up to the end. Somebody else eating the same could weigh 250 pounds and die much younger.

This is a good example.

My understanding of the seven deadly sins is that they are not sins, in and of themselves, but they lie at the root of all sin. Feeling gluttonous? You may go on a materialistic orgy at the mall and leave your family unable to tithe, let alone meet basic expenses. Feeling envious? You may end up sabatoging a co-worker’s promotion. And so forth.
