Yes, but much of it is caused by poor diet high in sugar, refined flour, junk food etc, not by overeating.
This is why you routinely see people on public assistance who are very fat. They aren’t sitting around the house eating humongous meals. They’re often even getting good exercise because they have to walk everywhere and they’re chasing their kids around. It’s the type of foods they are eating, like soda, chips, cookies, French fries, cheap white bread, canned food etc that is making them fat. All these foods are cheap and easy for them to get and prepare, while healthy food costs more, takes more time and effort to prepare, and isn’t always available. Especially in women, when this type of eating is coupled with pregnancies, you can end up huge.
There’s also a genetic component, so you frequently see two people eating the same stuff and one is thin and one is fat. My mother lived on coffee and junk food her whole life and was skinny for almost her whole life; at one point she gained about 30 pounds, quickly lost it on a diet and never gained it back. She also lived to be 89 and ate her burgers and fries right up to the end. Somebody else eating the same could weigh 250 pounds and die much younger.
