Dear Hashem -
Don’t feel badly - we’re pleased and proud to have you rant.
You, of the Jewish Faith, who I’m sure has seen your share of “reformed” Jewish Temples and Synagogues - are unique in caring so much about the Faith you are not practicing. But the Catholic Faith is dear to you because half of your family does practice it. Your interest (and, hence, participation here) is admirable and unselfish. And, yes, your aunt is right. We’ve watched our Churches and our Liturgy so change and have had to feel afraid to speak out for fear of anethemas, etc.

We need your rants, your traditional defenses - and we need you !
Le Chaim ! (sorry, it’s the only thing I know in Jewish…:o )
God Bless You - you’re a mensche (sp?) - a person ! And a dear friend…don’t stop ranting.👍

Thanks so much, and its great btw to hear from you again! How are things?

I just finished letting off a MAJOR vent against the modernizations of the RCC in another thread, and I’m worried I may have really upset some modern Catholics by it. I don’t know why I feel so strongly about this, I’m not even Catholic!

I tend to be a very big supporter of traditionalism in all religions, esp. my own, but it truly breaks my heart to see how Catholicism has been changed since V2.

My mom;s family is Catholic, and I remember how my great-aunt (a nun) cried to me back in the 1970s (because no one else in her church seemed to care), because of all the changes they made. She said it really shattered her spirit, to see the church she’d always known and loved turned into some sort of hippie-fest.

What I don’t get is, why do I feel so strongly about this? Is it because I detest the modernizations in any religion because its a symbol of how our entire society has gone downhill? It even ticks me off that women don’t wear hats to church anymore, and I don;t even go to church! I guess maybe I’m a sentimentalist, or maybe I just like traditional roles and traditionalism in general.

I was literally out of breath after writing my rant, and I have to wonder: maybe I was a Catholic in a past life who witnessed the changes of V2? Sounds crazy, but my religion does believe in reincarnation. Maybe I take this so personally because of my aunt, who cried to me, poured out her soul so tragically, to her Jewish niece because she felt those in her own religion didn’t care?

Or maybe because half my family is Catholic, and they all left the church because of V2…and so the only exposure I’ve had to RCism is via them and their memories?

Or because I love old movies like Going My Way and the Bells of St Mary’s? 😃

I’m just trying to figure out WHY this irritates me so much.
Hey- I am proud of your ‘ranting.’ Not enough people rant these days, and “all it takes for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing.”
Perhaps the Holy Spirit is trying to get your attention. Please prayerfully consider that. If you feel that strongly, I would suspect you are being called into the Church to be one of the Church militant. It warmed my heart to hear your defense of the Church. Yes, sadly, many things since Vatican II do seem like a hippy fest. Many, I feel, are quite dangerous to our faith, and are, in fact, far from Catholicism. Please keep praying, and keep ranting, too. I will pray for you also. God bless you. Your post really made my day!

As I’ve told many others, I’m not being called to become a Catholic. I realize many of you would like to think that, but its not true.If there was any non-Jewish religion I’d be ‘called’ to join, it would be Buddhism, because many of their beliefs are close to mine re: compassion for all sentient beings (but no, no way am I going there either, I’m very content as a religious Jew.)

I think my problem is that I dislike innovation, I like tradition, regardless of what religion we’re talking about. I see a certain comfort and security in tradition, even if its not my own. I even admire the Dalai Lama because he continues to wear his monk’s robes no matter where he goes, even though it may look out of place sometimes!

I have always greatly admired the externals of the traditional RCC, even though I disagree strongly with most of the doctrinal beliefs (the one belief I did like…Limbo for unbaptized babies…you guys got rid of, so…)

God’s grace perhaps - calling you home.

God bless,

Dies Irae

I had something similar happen to me regarding the watering down of Judaism. So I came to realize its my love of tradition, regardless of what religion we’re talking about. Besides which, I am already “home”.

I remember as a kid, my mom not letting me play with a girl down the street because, “she comes from a broken home” (in those days, children from broken homes were felt to be bad influences.) Can you imagine hearing someone saying that today?
Aww, that poor little girl 😦

But, I do understand your point - “broken homes” have become all too common!
