Hello everyone,

I am a 16 year old convert to the Catholic Church and my entire family is Evangelical Protestant. They are not happy that I converted and even convinced my mother I made a big mistake. They keep saying my priest is a pedofile and that I have a disorder because I stick up for my Catholic faith when Christianity comes into topic. My grandmother always brings up quotes from her pastor randomly, for example she will be giving me a ride home and say, pastor said blah blah. Then I would do the same about my priest or the pope or a saint, and its automatically extremist as my mother and family claims because I am Catholic. Today I showed my Grand Mother a video of me on youtube defending Roman Catholicism, and she was very offended and showed all my family members, including my mother to show her how “unhealthy” I am. She said I need to stop evangelizing Catholicism because I may offend others and never get a job in the future, because somebody might bring it up and show the boss who will be offended, but I’m not doing anything bad in the video but talking about Jesus and sacraments and catholic traditions. Now my Mother wants to get me help, my family is against me, and want nothing to do with me anymore. Over and over they keep trying to get me to leave the church. I try staying strong but they just are not happy. Everytime I go to mass and be active in my Church, its a obsession, but its not fair because if it was their church it would not even dare be a problem.

I don’t know what to do anymore, my family is against me, including my mother, and do not want to even dare talk to me. I think I’m just going to leave the Church, because my mother is now saying she won’t take me anywhere with her because I may try " forcing" somebody to be Catholic, and never have I in my life, I only explained the faith to people. My family keeps pushing their beliefs on me, including the participation of sending me bible scriptures saying I am un fruitful and full of hate and my mother says I am too much into the religion itself than God, and all religions are equal.

I honestly don’t know what to do guys ;( I tried looking other places for help and I keep getting messages from my family telling me I’m full of hate and attitude because I am Catholic, what do I do?

God bless you all,
BVMFatima

In many of your posts, IMO, you seem to demonstrate a continual antagonizing of your family members followed by coming here to garner sympathy.

This seems to be the latest edition.

You need to have more charity with your family.

You are young, you are impulsive, you need to start thinking before doing. I suggest you focus more on prayerful silence than antagonizing your family at every turn.

Wow. This is a tough situation. The first thing I think you should do is speak to your pastor or another priest you trust. Explain the situation to him and ask for his advice. Perhaps the priest would even be willing to meet with your mom, etc. in an effort to help. I don’t know about that part, but you definitely need guidance from a priest.

Then, if you can, find a good solid nucleus of Catholic people to be around, who support you in the Faith and who are serious about their own. This support structure can help you to weather what you are dealing with at home. If you can make some Catholic friends your own age, this may help your family to see that you are not all that different than they are, and help to ease the situation.

Thirdly, try focusing on your internal prayer life rather than evangelizing so much right now. It is normal for people to have a bit of an odd reaction when someone else converts, and then turns into what they perceive to be fanatical about their faith. Before I converted myself, I was very wary of such people.

First step though, speak to a priest, soon.

I’ll pray for you, and for your perseverance.

Right and I try my best, but they bash me for every little thing and I just don’t know how to respond but defend mother church. They are also saying there is things about the Church I don’t know about that can lead me away from Christ.

Try Francis of Assisi’s approach. Everyday go out and preach the gospel, use words only when necessary 😉

Then place all of your family with the Blessed Mother. Give them to her. 🙂

Thank you for all of your help. I’m not getting so many messages how their pastors are the correct ones because they studied theology longer than I was born… great when will it ever end?

I’d be antagonistic too if my family were emotionally and verbally abusing me. Am I seriously the only person who sees this? Why assume, just because they’re 16, that they have everything coming to them? :banghead:

when you stop arguing with them.

don’t take the bait.
Bingo.

When they bring it up, just respond with “Hey, I’m a teen. Maybe this is just a phase? Time will tell. You guys are good parents. Thanks for caring. I love you.”

The first thing you need to realize and accept is that they love you and are trying to protect you, however uninformed and misguided they might be. Otherwise, they wouldn’t care what church you went to. It may seem like anger and animosity on the surface, but they are actually showing you love. Respond in kind with love.

Wow. Tough situation.

My only advice is to remember Christ’s Passion. No matter how much they tormented Him, he did not answer back or call down power from Heaven. He suffered the pain quietly.

Perhaps this is what you need to do right now. Also, **do **talk to priest. He will be better able to advise you in this case.

God bless you on your spiritual journey! 👍

I think you should read some historical threads.

No, the OP is not being abused.

I don’t really think that’s what’s happening. It is great to defend the Church, but when you have your whole family against you and they have hardened their hearts - words may not be the best approach. When he does respond (and I would not say he is unjustified in doing so), they seem to be insisting that he is misinformed - and when he is outnumbered, that doesn’t really get him anywhere. This may be a case where it is better to turn the other cheek.

Don’t be too hard on yourself. I can only imagine what that must be like. Pray to St. Mary every day, even if it only briefly. Think of the words of St. Teresa of Avila

Suffering is a great favor. Remember that everything soon comes to an end . . . and take courage. Think of how our gain is eternal.
–St. Teresa of Avila

Cant anyone else here see how hard it might be to be a 16 year old convert and have ur family not supporting you? I’ll pray for you! Offer it up!

Pray and hold your peace.

Read Ephesians 6:1-4.

When provoked in any way, nicely ask for respect to discern your life in Christ Jesus.

Let your actions represent humility and respect.
