I always knew it was not a “divorce”; an annulment means that a valid marriage did not take place. We have that idea in Judaism too, such as when a Kohen marries a divorced woman, or a Jew remarries without having received a “get” (bill of divorcement) first. Such marriages are not real marriages since they cannot, by religious law, take place.Well, as has been stated in the past few posts, it’s a delcaration that a Sacramental marriage had never taken place when the alleged marriage was contracted. Bilop went into it a little further.
What is isn’t is a divorce or dissolution of a marriage. The Catholic Church believes that a valid or Sacramental marriage cannot be dissolved.
My question was, why were they so hard to get before V2, and easier now? Is it that more Catholics now are getting invalid marriages to start with?
I seem to remember that the fat guy in England wanted an annulment too, and because he couldn’t get one, he had to contrive all sorts of reasons why he felt his marriage was invalid.
When he didn’t get it, he broke away and started his own church!
