I’m a fallen away Catholic. Before leaving I learned (from conservative, faithful Catholic sources like this website) way more about the Catholic faith than most people. And in the end found that I just couldn’t believe it. But I so envy people that can. I’m not going to ask any specific questions about doctrine as I’ve done that galore – and gotten the “party line” answers – and still just can’t believe it. Christ I believe in – but Catholicism I just can’t. But like I said, I envy those who can.

“Just couldn’t”–or just won’t???

Give us some specifics–or is just because of the morality, especially sexual?

Since you won’t talk of your issues, I won’t seek to guess and tell you what you should do.

Assuming you still believe in God in some way, perhaps you could try to offer your difficulties in prayer?

Reason needs to be answered of course, but part of what we need is the gift of grace as well

Just can’t. I understand the differnence between can’t and won’t. Won’t means you know it to be true but are not willing to live by it. Can’t means I just cannot for the life of me believe it no matter how hard I try.

The sexual teachings aren’t the hardest and certainly nothing I could not live by. I find all the arguments against contraception to not be very convincing, but had I been married I would have lived by it. There are several other teachings I just could not believe – I’m not really looking for a discussion so won’t go into it. Thanks for taking an interest. I hope I didn’t waste your time – I just wanted to post that I envy people who can really buy into what a particular “strain” of Christianity teaches (be that Protestant, EO, or RC) – it brings a lot of peace of mind.

I find it odd that people think “you know, God got everything right, but he’s wrong on [contraception / abortion / homosexuality / sex]. I think I know better than God.”

There are things that nobody can understand.

I can see where some people would be envious of Catholics since we don’t have to micro-manage what we believe from day to day, never knowing if we’re moving into some particular heresy or out of one (or both at the same time :)). It is a great comfort.

Unfortunately, I figured somebody would be uncharitable.
You have attributed to those who disagree with you (and the Catholic Church) something they don’t say. They don’t believe that God got it all right except the Catholic teaching on contraception. They believe the Catholic Church is the one that is wrong.

It was plain from what I posted from the beginning that I sincerely just can’t believe what the Catholic church teaches on that issue – i.e., I don’t believe that is what God really thinks on the matter. And you post that I believe that “God got it wrong” because (for you) what the Catholic church teaches = what God says.

Why is it that committed Catholics are so often mean to those who disagree with them?

I’m not being uncharitable, I’m merely questioning the logic behind it.

I’m speaking solely of the people who would be Catholic, except there is one or two moral issues that they refuse to consent on. If they want to be Catholic, then that means they accept that God has inspired everything; but if they refuse to accept those two issues, then it is like saying that God is wrong on those two.

Then I am not speaking of you.

I don’t believe I’m being mean, I’m merely commenting on one logical inconsistency. If you have interpreted my post as being uncharitable, then perhaps there is something that I hit upon that you don’t wish to accept.

Thanks – your attitude has helped me in my decision to not to be Catholic.

I didn’t come here looking for any sort of fight so am not going to continue this. So you can reply and falsely say that me and others who honestly don’t believe Catholic doctrine believe this, that, or the other thing – suit yourself. I won’t be checking the thread so suit yourself.

“Another brick in the wall”

You have already chosen to not be Catholic, so there’s no way I influenced it. If you’re saying that you’re not going to join the Catholic Church because one person on the internet came off as being mean to you, then it is irrelevant because at some point or another you’re going to face somebody on the Internet with the intent of shaking your faith. 🤷

Now, again. I didn’t intend to be rude, and I don’t think I was. I apologize if my comment came off as being uncharitable.

I’m not here to fight either. You have said that you do not fit the persona I was describing so there is no conflict between us, except for the elitism that you perceived from my post.

Hit and run posting: I dont like what the Church teaches, I dont believe it–but I wont say why–I wont believe and nothing you say can change it, I’ve heard it all before. My mind is made up–and you’re all mean because you question why I’m posting this in the first place

Why exactly are you envious?

You sound a bit frustrated by your situation regarding your faith. I pray the Holy Spirit opens your heart and your eyes to faith in Christ.

It seems that the person in question does not want to be consoled, or see things any other way. God bless you in your search.🙂

Being able to envy us implies that you admire The Church and its people. Sometimes that is how God operates through other’s grace that he has invested in them. You see something you like but can’t quite figure it all out yet. I’d take it as a indication that you don’t have a formed conscience yet and actual grace is at work in you trying to get you to find a way to reconcile your regrets with your intellect and lead you to the truth.

Follow your instincts - and give grace a chance to operate.

‘several other teachings’ - which ones are they? Clearly you’re here for a reason, and if you think in a million years anyone would believe that deep down your only intent was to simply say ‘gosh I envy you guys’ you can spare your breath, cause none of us are ‘buying into’ that.
