1 It doesn’t seem very holy to ask God to give you a husband and children.

Any thoughts?
since you ask, why is it not holy to ask God for a husband and children? It is what he intends for most of the human race and hard-wired into our natures by the Creator, and as the book of Genesis notes, God called his creation good, so why is it not holy to want what is good?
Perhaps it is the sex aspect. It feels sinful to want that, or to pray for that.
ditto, God created sex for the purpose of procreation and created it moreover to be expressed most properly in marriage, and it is so holy it is in fact a sacrament between two baptized persons, blessed with the actual presence and grace of Christ, so repeat, why is it not holy to desire it?

Wait wait wait… high sex drive is holy!!! Then I’m a saint! Lol!

builds St. CountrySinger Church I’m going to be the patron saint of girlie drinks, Elliott Yamin, happy husbands wink, and country singers.

And the sister church will St. Kimothy80’s.

LOL! Times like this, I wish we had a “high five” button! 😃

I can’t quite explain it, but here are some thoughts as to why this might be the case.

1 When I was growing up, I heard a pastor (I was raised Protestant) talking about how it was important to make sure you didn’t love your spouse more than God. I also read articles that talked about this when I was a teenager. So I began to worry that I would love my husband more than I loved God. It feels as though, when I ask for a husband and children, I’m saying I don’t love God enough.
2 Staying single or becoming a nun seems like a bigger sacrifice, so it feels though I am asking God for the easy way out.
3 By asking God for a husband and children, it feels as though I’m asking God for sex. I know there’s a lot more to marriage and children than that, and sex is not (entirely) what I’m asking for when I ask for a husband and children. But it is part of it, and it feels wrong to want that, and even worse to ask God for that.

Like I said, I know none of the above is actually true. But it feels true. I (objectively) know that marriage is a vocation and a sacrament, and I believe that. I believe and profess all that the Catholic Church believes, teaches, and proclaims to be revealed by God. And I know that God created marriage, children, and sex, and that His creation is good. But that’s not what I feel.

Then my lack of one could be a problem for me in the future…could this effect my eternal destination?

Should I start taking wonder drugs? 😉
Yep, you’ll go to Heaven, and I’m so going to Hell for joking about being a saint. My mom always said my humor would get me in trouble.

I don’t know. It just doesn’t feel right. The really crazy thing is, I can admit to people on an internet forum that I would like to have sex, but I can’t admit that to God. Which is completely insane, since He already knows that anyway, and He made me like this. But, nevertheless, here we are.

I can relate to # 3. Part of me would like to be married and share my life with some one…another part thinks 'omg…am I really for that awesome responsibility?? Sometimes I think “I need to get married soon so that I can break out of my selfish flying-solo” habits. Other times it’s like “Kim, stop worrying or you’re gonna make yourself sick” Ya know what I’m saying?

Also, I know I’m going to be one of those over-protective-but-means-well type mother!
Yeah, I feel both of those things too. On the one hand, marriage and children would make me a lot less selfish. But I worry I’ll make a terrible wife and mother, that I’m too selfish and not responsible enough to do that.

Ok, I’m starting to think that Catholic Answers Forum needs a special sub-forum for singles.

That being said, I want to marry and have children, but whenever I pray for a husband and children, I feel very guilty.

Several reasons.

1 It doesn’t seem very holy to ask God to give you a husband and children.

2 I worry that maybe God doesn’t want me to marry, so I’ll be wasting my time. Or wose, he’ll answer my prayers and I’ll be miserable, since I wasn’t meant to marry.

3 I’m worried that I’ll be a terrible wife and mother, and just make everyone else miserable.

4 To be perfectly honest, a part of me still doesn’t believe that God loves me or wants me to be happy.

I still pray anyway. I also pray for my future husband, and that God will give me the grace to be a good wife and mother. But I still feel guilty.

Any thoughts?
My dear sister in Christ,
  1. You better believe that being a mother is a very holy thing… the most highly honored saint in the history of the Church is Mary, the Mother of God :). We need more Holy Mothers who will proclaim the Gospel serving the Lord as wives & moms!
  2. God doesn’t play games with us, He won’t lead you into a vocation that will make you unhappy. Keep praying & ask the Lord to guide you to do whatever He calls you to do. If the Lord wants you to be a wife & mother than you will be a wife & mother, you just have to say “Yes Lord, let it be done to me according to Thy will”(Luke 1:38)
  3. If God is truly calling you to marriage & family, then He will give you the grace needed to serve Him as a married woman. We all have our doubts… but the important thing is that we place our Trust in the Lord. Look at St. Peter the first pope… when the Lord came to Him in Luke chapter 5 he said " Depart from me Oh Lord for I am a sinful man!". He obviously didn’t think he make a good pope… What did Jesus say to Him? ’ **Do Not Be Afraid, from now on you shall be catching people" **And the same principle applies for any vocation, whether it be to the priesthood, married life, religious life etc
  4. I think these doubts come not from God, but from your adversary the devil who wants you to be unhappy. God on the other hand wants you to be happy because He loves you sooo much! If you doubt that He loves you infinitely more than you could imagine you HAVE to take another look at a crucifix…It would have been perfectly just for God to have not sent His Son… I mean hey we deserve the consequences of sin… but God loves us sooo much that He gives us His only Son, that He who believes in will not perish but have eternal life(John 3:16)
You’re in my prayers beloved!

Your brother in Christ,
Zachary

Thanks. I needed that.

🙂

Yeah, I worry about that all the time. I think about all the sacrifices I’ll have to make as a wife and mother, and I don’t think I’m a good enough person to do that.

I guess one thing we both have going for us is we admit that.
Well if you’ve got yourself a job, you’ll at least be one step ahead of me. I’m not even out of college yet. :o
Now, if you’re looking for a husband and kids as some kind of status symbols, or if you think marriage will “fix” you, or if you think God has to send you a husband to prove His love, you’re asking for trouble.
Oh I don’t know. Shouldn’t finding your soul mate have a very significant impact on your life? I’m personally guilty of thinking that finding the person I’m meant for might fix me in a way. If you were to describe my life, my belief in myself was like a grand city suddenly reduced to ground zero by a merciless air raid. It tires me just trying to defend what little is left with hardly a remaining ounce to rebuild it all.

I mean I’ve tried self-help books and programs (religious and secular), and still nothing. Neither of them helped how lonely, insecure, and hated I felt all the time.

I just can’t see how much longer I can go on in my life being my personal cheerleader when everything worth cheering for has been reduced to utter worthlessness. >:\

I think it’s because there are some people (even on these threads and in this day and age) who become so zealous in promoting purity they make it as if people should never think of sex at all. To them, it’s just a way to make babies and not the ultimate way a couple can express their love. I think in medieval times they even made all sorts of crazy “chastity” devices for married couples to prevent them from enjoying sex too much and just make sure the woman bears an heir and such. :\

Sometimes I wonder what would happen if I fell in love with a person that was raised by such people? (And if you knew the things I looked for in a spouse, it’s not as impossible as you think.) I cannot help but feel amused at the thought of how clueless that girl might be on our wedding night while I (despite being unwillingly exposed to sexual depravity) have at least a fair idea of how to make it the best for her. :o
Wait wait wait… high sex drive is holy!!! Then I’m a saint! Lol!
I know rite? Could it be that the perverse imp in my head (with his 2D complex and uniform fetishism) be an angel instead? I’ve been giving him God of War style beatings for years! D8

Lord forgive me! DX (:p:rolleyes::D)

Even though, by praying for a husband and children, I’m actually praying for a lot more than that.

I can understand the difficulty in your situation (even though I’ve pretty much resigned in a way that I don’t combat sexual thoughts as a saint does). These days it just seems impossible to strike a balance between appreciating sex as an expression of love between married couples and abstaining from sexual thoughts while single (or worse, while still dating).

I think satan really was clever in splitting the treatment of the topic of sex into two extremes. If it’s not seen through the corrupt eyes of perverts, it gets scorned by the eyes of prudes.

Well, Father Benedict Groschel did say that the US went from Puritanism to hedonism without ever bothering to stop at common sense. I don’t know what the common sense approach is. I vascillate between the two extremes. (I even posted a thread on this forum that talked about how I hated my sex drive and I would be willing to drug myself to make it go away.)

As I said before, I think that’s a big part of what makes me think that it’s not holy to ask God for a husband and children. It’s seems so selfish and wrong to want to have sex, and to ask God for that. I mean, if I was married, it would be ok for me to want to have sex, but since I’m not married, it doesn’t seem right to want to have sex.

I’m not sure I know either. Sad isn’t it? You either think about sex and get called a pervert or shun it and get called a prude. -.-;;

It’s only selfish if sex is the only thing you’re after and only because it’s a shallow reason for tying the knot in the first place.

Now marriage has many other desirable benefits (e.g. your soul mate, children). Are you selfish for desiring those as well when God Himself declares such things holy?

World peace? Who am I, Miss America?

.
😃

DON’T feel guilty. The Almighty expects us to and in fact tells us to ask him for the things we want. 👍

And he’ll answer your prayers when the time is right. I’d also add that you might ask him for the right husband, not just any old schlub. 😃

Good point. I’ll remember that. Note to self: ask for the right husband.

The crazy thing is, somehow, when I was a teenager, I got it into my head that if I wanted a husband, that meant that I didn’t love God enough. Even worse, I started to believe that God wanted us to be holy, not happy. **I even started to believe that being happy was incompatible with being holy. ** I felt that if I asked God for a husband and children, He wouldn’t give them to me, since that would make me happy. So I decided I would never even admit to God in prayer that I wanted a husband, because if I did, I would never get married.

I really did a number on myself when I was a teenager. 😦 Now that I’m older, intellectually I can see the flaws in my reasoning, and what I started to believe. But it’s still hard to overcome the old ways of thinking.
