I feel like a bad husband and father after being fired. Advice?

I am glad to hear that you went to the AA meetings. I know this is a stressful time for you, and that the meetings will keep you on course. I will include you in my prayers each day. God bless you and guide you to a new and better job.

It looks like you’re quite employable, you stay right on top of things, and the way you’re handling it shows your professionalism. I wouldn’t be surprised if you found a good opening soon.

Also, it’s a good thing you’re working with a professional recruiter. Those guys know the field, they can help you with resumes and covering letters, which benefit from a professional approach. Those guys also know how to negotiate. You may end up with a better salary that way than if you tried independently.

Regarding the old employer, you may actually have been ‘lucky’. At least you were fired for a more or less visibly overstated reason after 5 years of good performance reviews, which combines with your candid admission that you did make a relatively small fixable mistake, to give you credibility. At least the employer didn’t manage or care to stage a more serious disciplinary sacking with fabricated reasons of a grave and convincing nature. Having unreasonable superiors is dangerous to you anyway.

For the record, people say all sorts of things when they dump you. Employers, clients, girlfriends, same old thing. Don’t let them make you wallow in guilt!

I’m rolling off a contract right now and even under favorable circumstances, I hate job searching. As for your daughter, never underestimate a little girl’s loyalty to her father.

It’s only a “failure” if you don’t learn from your mistakes and from the mistakes of others, and move onward and upward.

You’ll be just fine, I think. 🙂

I understand the fear of unemployment and overall family stress - my husband has been put through the wringer in life with his career… it’s very, very hard. 😦
 
I just talked to the HR person at my future employer. She said as long as my background check is good, I have the job. I don’t even have a speeding ticket.

It could have been worse. I had 8 children, 1 on the way and one child come down with Type 1 diabetes when this happened to me about 6 years ago. God bless my dear wife who was my pillar during this time.

It took about 1 year to find work in my field. In the mean time, I did handyman work, mowed lawns, fixed houses damaged by movers, anything that would keep the cash coming in. Funny thing is I made more money doing odd jobs than I did as an engineer. Almost contemplated doing it for a living except health insurance with a diabetic child is murderously high.

If for some reason it doesn’t pan out, with a used pickup truck, a powerwasher, receipt book from Staples, business cards and photocopied flyers you make $500-600/day powerwashing houses and decks. Pickup a copy of “Guerilla Marketing” at the library.
 
I have had a phone interview, met with two team managers, and now meeting with the claims director. The background check and reference checks are already complete. What should I think my chances are? This is an insurance claims job, and have 9 years experience.

If they turn you down, they will probably point you to someone else who is hiring.
