I went to confession today and prior to going, I felt fine and at peace (I’m assuming that this peace was the state of grace, not that I should trust my feelings), but afterwards, I’ve lost that feeling of peace, and feel similar to the times when I know I’m in mortal sin. If I’m in a state of mortal sin, then I need to know when and how I fell, there are several possible instances where I might have sinned:
  1. Invalid form of absolution: The most probable cause of falling is that my priest used an invalid form of absolution, the correct formula for absolution is “I absolve you” and my priest has been good at saying " I absolve you" in past confessions, but this time I didn’t hear the “I absolve you” part. I asked the priest, and he said he did say “I absolve you” but I’m not sure, I assumed I didn’t hear him, but I’m not if I’m just telling myself this, as a way to reassure myself, I also told myself that Deus providet (See: canonlaw.info/2007/02/we-need-to-be-careful-with-notion-of.html) but that’s just pure speculation, I can’t rely on that alone if that’s the only evidence I have for not being in mortal sin. Should I have pressed the priest more?
  2. Sacrilege in the confession: During confession, towards the end father and I were talking about scruples and going to confession on certain devotions like, Divine Mercy Sunday. In an effort to reassure that I’m becoming better and recognizing God’s grace I made the comment that I haven’t committed any mortal sexual sins this week. Was that an appropriate thing to comment on during confession? Was that a boastful act of sacrilege?
  3. Scrupulosity: As mentioned above, before I went to confession, felt like I was in a state of grace before going to confession (I know I shouldn’t trust feelings), but one of the sins I confessed was scrupulosity. This brings up an important question that I should have asked earlier: Is giving into scrupulous thoughts a mortal sin? If so, than it’s possible that what happened was that, worrying about whether or not father said the correct formula for absolution, and whether or not I should of pressed him about it, that’s what caused me to fall into mortal sin.
Like I said before I shouldn’t trust my feelings, and it is possible I could be totally wrong and not in mortal sin at all. In fact several times, including when I did my acts of penance and right now, I felt these feelings of consolation, but every time I pray, through the intersession of Our Lady and ask Christ whether or not I have sinned mortally, I get these horrible feelings that seem to make it clear to that me I have offended Him gravely. Please let me know where I went wrong.

Glory to God
and
Hail Mary!

Glory to God
and
Hail Mary!
You went to confession.
You were absolved

Be at peace.

Yes go to Divine Mercy Sunday. Take a friend!

Its ok to have scuples. Its the cross you carry atm. Please have trust in your Priest. Remember Jesus is in the confessional with the Priest. In the Tribunal of MERCY. Jesus is merciful
to us. We should then, be merciful to ourselves.

Faith is not a feeling.

You asked the priest if he used the proper formula and he confirmed that he did - you were absolved. You did not hide any mortal sins so all your sins have been wiped away - know that you are clean.

Do not continue to doubt the Power of the Mercy of God in the Sacrament of Reconciliation.

Be at peace.

The worst thing you can do is discuss and debate this on an internet forum, least of all where there are very few clergy and even fewer clerics who are priests who are, and have been, confessors of decades standing.

You have a confessor and he is the one to properly guide you – and also to help you move beyond not only scruples but being governed by ephemeral feelings. What you feel is no sound measure at all for spiritual realities.

Read random pages in Matthew ,
In time you will find the answers before the question arises

You were absolved. You cannot commit Mortal Sin “by accident”
  • Grave mater
  • Full knowledge
  • Full will and intent
    You lack all three here
YehoiakhinEx232: Scrupulosity is something that you need a Spiritual Advisor to help you with, not the internet!
