I returned to the Church a couple of months ago. And lately, I feel like I’m under demonic attack. Thoughts that “this whole perpetual virginity of Mary thing is ridiculous” followed by wondering what’d be like to return to the church of my childhood. This despite the fact that I have no desire to do such a thing, and would cheerfully tell you Mary is ever-virgin if you asked. I said a St. Michael prayer as soon as I snapped back to myself but these intrusive thoughts are exhausting and not helping my scrupulosity as I end up obsessing over whether I willfully entertained the thought. They seem especially bad when reading the Bible and after Mass. Advice?

Praying to St. Michael the Archangel to watch over & protect you.

Do pray, of course, especially to St. Michael and your guardian angel. Perhaps you should delve into your faith (e.g., pray the rosary and attend Mass frequently) and you will be more secure. This is all I have.

My thoughts and prayers will be with you.

Keep praying when these thoughts arise. I prayed the Our Father and Hail Mary as well, and prayed to some saints for help. Your enemy is persistent, and you must persevere more.

Also, after a while these thoughts may disappear, but after some weeks, other thoughts may arise. Pray again…

The more closer you are to God, the more the devil will hate it, but the more protected you are by participating in the sacraments. Do not fear. The only people at risk of possession are those who do not participate in the sacraments. Not my words, but Fr. Fortea’s. And read that in the life of the Saints, the demons where present to tempt and scare. See Padre Pio Miracle Man movie.

Pray "away from me Satan! " I had similar thoughts many years ago and your return to the faith has enraged the evil one to no end. As for Mother Mary, just acknowledge her as the Mother of God and don’t get caught up in all the Marian pronouncements. It’s Jesus Christ who should be our focus regarding salvation, not his mother.

Prayer, Mass, the Holy Eucharist and Confession will definitely help you. You may want to obtain a Spiritual Director priest also. If you have constant unwanted thoughts, you could very well have OCD. A psychiatrist could help with medication and counseling.

What you describe doesn’t really sound like a demonic attack, but in case your holding information back out of modesty…

You could order a spiritual warfare book and pray the deliverance prayers for
yourself. Go to Mass and confession often. Avoid all sinful people and behavior. Pray often, and pray the Rosary.

Then read uplifting things, eat well, get enough sleep. Keep your mind occupied.

I say demonic because the thoughts don’t feel like they come from me. I was raised evangelical Protestant, so the flowery language describing Mary and the saints sometimes give me pause, but I assent to akk doctrines and pray the rosary daily. The thoughts can vary but are blasphemous, some of which I wouldn’t have tolerated even as an evangelical: Jesus is not God and various other blasphemies that I don’t experience as coming from or willed by me and began just after I returned to the Church and seem to occur when I’m most confident I’m in a state of grace. I don’t know what to call that but demonic.

If you have scrupulosity you need to find a priest to be your regular confessor and follow his advice. Do not second guess yourself. It does not sound like you willingly entertain these thoughts since you disagree with them. Continue to pray and go to Mass as often as you can. Spending time in Adoration will also help.

Hail Mary,
Full of Grace,
The Lord is with thee.
Blessed art thou among women,
and blessed is the fruit
of thy womb, Jesus.
Holy Mary,
Mother of God,
pray for us sinners now,
and at the hour of our death.
Amen.

Familiarize yourself with Contemplative Prayer and learn (pray) to quiet your mind. I believe that most people are under demonic attack and do not even realize it!

Your evaluation is scriptural. Read deric prince. Books on deliverance. Or blessing or curse u can choose. 2 Cor.10:5

Here is a link to a short article interviewing Fr Gary Thomas, a parish priest and vatican trained exorcist. it is short but concise in explaining demonic things. I think I have watched a youtube of Fr Gary Thomas that is really very good.

I agree with others suggestions to receive the sacraments, confession is like a minor exorcism 🙂

Padre Pio said…Pray Hope and Don’t Worry, St Therese of Liseuex said “the devil is a coward”. St Teresa wrote holy water is the best thing to chase them away 🙂

Blessings and prayers for you +++

This is correct that intrusive thoughts can be a sign of OCD, not to worry though, you can get through this. The same thing happened to me in your situation. Before I re-entered the church I never had this happen so I look at it a good sign. Found out that we aren’t to let intrusive thoughts worry us as they have no power. Confession, Mass, the Eucharist, prayer, etc. Keep doing that but they have not completely gone away for me. Good news is if you keep going you only get stronger while the thoughts get weaker. Hope this helps but in no way take as medical or other authoritative advice. Godspeed.
