Today I went to my first ever Divine Liturgy. It was incredibly beautiful and I hope very much to go back soon. (although we had to drive 1.5 hrs to get there :() We are hoping (and praying!) that we can get a priest for our Mission so the drive won’t be an issue anymore. I truly felt at home when I was there, it was just plain awesome! I had gone to a TLM (low Mass) a few weeks ago in an attempt to find some reverence and tradition while I wait on our Mission. Boy, that Latin Mass didn’t hold a candle to the Byzantine Liturgy! (I’m not putting it down, it’s just not for me:o)

Congrats 🙂 I’d like to check out a Byzantine Catholic Church every so often when I move out to college, but as of now God’s leading me to the TLM.

Btw I love your signature! St. Philomena and I are good friends 😛

Hi Erin! Wonderful! 🙂

Can I ask what kind of Byzantine Catholic Church was it? Ruthenian, Ukrainian, etc.?

God Bless!

Andrew.

It was a Ukrainian church. (It did have pews and the stations of the cross on the walls (I think), but other than that, I found few latinizations …which makes me happy 🙂 )

Is there any Orthodox parish near you that you could get to this week? This week are the evening services of Compline and Great Canon. It’s very beautiful. There is no Eucharist at the Compline. My very small Byzantine Catholic parish does not have Compline and Great Canon this week, only the Presanctified liturgy, so I will be going at least tomorrow night to an Orthodox Church I go to on such occasions.

Don’t forget the Liturgy of the PreSancdtified Gifts–probably our most beautiful single service!

It’s generally held Wednesday and Friday in Great Lent in parishes, but can be daily in Monasteries.

That reminds me to pick up the Lenten schedule of the local GOA parish, St. Nicholas. How many of these liturgies are evening liturgies? (Some of us work mid-week)

I know our Ukrainian Catholic Parish is doing the Liturgy of the Pre-sanctified gifts this Wedenesday at 5:00 p.m. and I assume most Ukr. Cath. Churches in the GTA do a similar time on that day. 🙂

yes, there are 3 where I live and I’m planning on attending at least 1 service during Lent (and perhaps more if I can fit them in to my schedule:) )

The Presanctified Liturgy in the USA is generally done in the evening, as was originally the practice.

And Great Compline with the Canon is over for another year (5th week we take it once with Matins). We celebrated every evening at our mission this week, and when doing it with all of the prostrations, the idea of “ascetic” in relation to physical exercise is more than obvious…

Wow, did you go all the way to Mishawaka? Hope Fr. Jim is well.

yep, we drove up there…it took about 1.5 hrs to get there but I think we were speeding quite a bit :D! It was such a tiny, yet beautiful, church! I really hope to go back soon. The way things are looking for our Mission, we will have to use a local University Chapel (which is horrendously ugly) for DL or any other service. We’re still trying to get a priest so until then, DL is out but we’ve been meeting and doing small prayer services and such.

What we did down here was to obtain the use of a Latin school classroom that was unused and east-facing that we could set up the iconostas and leave it set up. It’s a pain to have to move everything for every service. Been there, done that.
