I Found My Prayer Rope

It was in a little velvet bag, along with a St. Benedict Rosary from the monastery and a copy of the Rule of St. Pachomius. My daughter and I were cleaning the car and underneath the power seat motor, covered under a protective layer of empty coffee cups, there it was, my original 100 knot MasterBeadsman Rolfes Rope.



Yes, it happened. I went for a long walk after midnight last night and prayed both. First I whispered into the ear of Our Lady and told her how much I love her, and then I prayed the rule and asked her son for mercy.

triumphguy, it is a wonder way to pray the Jesus prayer, from the Eastern Churches. Phillipā€™s hand made ropes are works of art.

Iā€™ve updated the Rule of St. Pachomius document to reflect the new creed. PDF and editable DOC in case anyone wants to remove the filioque or change anything around.

Prayer ropes (aka ā€œchotkiā€ or ā€œkomboskiniā€) are used among Christians of the Byzantine tradition - both the Catholics and the Orthodox - as well as some Coptics to pray the Jesus Prayer. It is a tradition that goes back at least to the 8th Century, and possibly before. Some folks refer to it as the Byzantine rosary, and this is perfectly acceptable. This is the Russian style chotki which Phillip made for me.





Here is a five decade dominican style western rosary with white beads and some prayer bracelets.





I also own the spectacular rope pictured below but admit to not quite knowing how to pray with it. I just recite 107 Jesus prayers and one ā€œMost Holy Theotokos, Save us!ā€ at each divider and trust that God knows the symbolism behind it all. A priest at my parish from India who is originally from the Syro Malabar Church and still celebrates their Divine Liturgy once in a while was most interested in this rope when I asked him to bless it.

Being so used to meditating the mysteries of the rosary, praying the Jesus prayer on the chotki was uncomfortable for me at first. It was described to me as ā€œImagelessā€ prayer, and I think that is a good description. There is no meditation, nothing really to think about except the holy name of Jesus as one breathes the prayers. I find that it leaves me empty, almost desolate, as if there is only myself and the name of Jesus present. Not unpleasant, just different. I find it to be a powerful weapon when temptation is strong.

The richness of our faith is amazing. I never heard of such a thing as a chotki until about two years ago and now it is a part of my life. Phillips work is truly beautiful.

Phillip made a beauty for me, but the bottom dreads are becoming disheveled. IT might be because Iā€™ve stuffed the thing in my pocket, at first. Iā€™ve been wearing it around my wrist, since. I donā€™t know if it helps significantly, but Iā€™d like to think it does.

If I did the tassels on yours, try singing the ends with either a match or a cigarette lighter. That should help stop the fraying. šŸ˜ƒ
 
Yup I have our Phillip doing a lot of work lately with a 300 knot rope. Looking forward to it. šŸ˜ƒ

From now on, store it with a St. Benedict rosary in a velvet bag underneath your driverā€™s side power seat motor and cover all of that with empty coffee cups. It will stay perfect, I promise. A '99 Ford with 210,000 miles works best.

I might put mine back there, this way I always know where it is.

One of these days I would like to get around to making a Prayer Rope. I have two right now, both 100 knot ropes with beads every 10th knot. I say the Jesus Prayer on the knots, the Anima Christi prayer on the beads and I try to remember to say the Collect fopr Corpus Christi Sunday when I am finished
