I genuinely don't get it - why the illogical hatred???

Ok, so I’ve found a catholic church. I’ve now negotiated a slightly later starting time with my boss on the days Im on early turn, so I can get to mass in the morning. I want to see what it’s all about.

(Note, this is just planning, I havent actually BEEN yet).

So I need to cross check some roster information with a coworker. I explain why I want the slightly later start time, and it’ll work out at maybe twice a week.

WELL SHE ABSOLUTELY FREAKS !!!

Dang - it was like being back in the clinic running the gauntlet of the burn in hell christians spitting and throwing urine at me :eek:

She told me, in words even a hardened street worker like me have rarely heard, that there was just NO WAY she was going to cooperate with me. NO WAY.

And the reason? Because I want to check out a catholic church and a catholic mass.

She actually said, she would be happy to cover me for ANYTHING, except that.

And somewhere in the heated exchange, she said would help anyone with anything, but not to become a catholic.:confused: :eek:

I asked her, right up, if she was some sort of fundamentalist. Her answer? No. She doesnt hold with any orgnaised religion. She’s a free thinker and doesnt need to belong to a church or give the pope her money :confused:

She then went on and on and on about how the pope was the antichrist and all that stuff.

Dang.

Dang.

I just left it. I was too shocked really to carry on talking to her. I wasnt expecting the explosion I got - but the REASON she gave was even MORE BIZZARE !!!

Oh well. Back to square one I guess. Daily mass is not on the cards now. BUT, I’m DETERMINED to make mass this sunday 👍

I don’t get it. I really don’t get it.
 
I think now would be a good time to paraphrase Fulton Sheen…

There are millions upon millions of peopole who hate what they mistankenly believe to be the Catholic Church, and if what they believed to be the Catholic Church actually was the Catholic Church, then Catholics would hate it, too

And I’ll be praying for you, of course 🙂 . Have you checked to see if there is Eucharistic adoration at the church, or anything else you could try to attend, outside of daily Mass?

Don’t be discouraged. Jesus Christ himself said that you should rejoyce when you’re persecuted for his sake, because your reward is great in Heaven. Have you talked to your boss about this problem? If your boss agrees with your coworker, you may want to consider not only looking for another job, but suing them for religious descrimination. Don’t give up! You’re in my prayers.

BTW, please check your PM’s, because I sent you a message earlier today. You may find some encouragement in that message.
 
Does the church offer a Saturday Night Mass? Would this work out for you?

Take heart and don’t be discouraged. As I mentioned in another thread, possibly my favorite Far Side cartoon features God pouring out a shaker labeled “jerks” over the earth, with the thought “Just to make things interesting…”

Show your co-worker love and respect. You may be the only Catholic she actually knows, and it’s on you to be a good representative of your church. You can’t do it alone, so pray constantly for help; we’ll be happy to join you.

Yep - there’s a saturday night mass, which I could make every 2nd week. And two masses on sundays either of which I could get to every week. So all is not lost I guess. I just liked the idea of being able to get to mass every day before work. Though - it has to be said right now - Im saying that, without ever having actually been to a mass - so not really sure why I like the ‘‘idea’’ 🤷
I was just an idea - part of my planning to change my daily routine to make a complete break with the past. I guess that part of the plan is not on the cards yet. That’s ok.
It was my coworkers reaction that shocked me - and frightened me a little bit too if Im totally honest. Wow. It’s just not possible I guess to be neutal about the catholic church huh? You either love it or hate it 😃
 
Another option for you would be to take time in the morning and read the Bible at home. It is a wonderful way to start the day! You may want to see if a local church offers a Bible Study. I know that some Catholics on this forum frown upon this but we do have Catholics that attend our weekly Bible Study because their Catholic Church does not offer it.

Not yet. I’m guessing I’m going to wait until early next year. I mean, there’s like 67 days left in this year and Ive not made it into a church yet 😃

Interesting how such a free thinker would be so closed off to someone exploring. “The lady doth protest too much, methinks.”
 
Do you know what this is really about? Authority. Americans hate authority and hierarchy. That’s why, if you were really a ‘free thinker’ you’d just open up your bible and know exactly what it is supposed to mean. Ever notice how everyone is ‘spiritual not religious’ these days? It really goes back to that idea, everyone is supposed to be exactly equal and every individual capable of discovering every truth on their own with no help. Catholicism to these people represents the exact opposite: submission to authority, acknowledgement that you need help figuring things out, and dependence on others.

I made that exact referrence in another post somewhere yesterday I think. Im discerning that for many, it’s a combination of laziness (Catholicism seems like just too much hard work) and an arrogance that will not allow them to submit to authority. I think Rome is on to something 😃

I don’t agree entirely. Most people have been exposed to the idea that what Rome says not only should be followed, but is the absolute, infallible, unquestioned truth. Since American logic is largely predicated on the idea of rugged individualism or on exploring all avenues to discover an “ideal way”, the idea of someone who simply accepts whatever a particular authority says is regarded as un-American or simply unable/unwilling to explore.

As for the second part, I don’t think there’s necessarily a problem with submission to authority or help figuring things out. Many Protestants attend or hold Bible studies, where groups of people discuss a particular concept or passage. Most Christians have no problem acknowledging God as sovereign king over all of creation. But most people would have a problem if their local pastor said, “Everything that I’ve said today is absolute, and if you don’t follow it exactly then you’re a heretic worthy of damnation.” THAT is where the problem comes in. THAT is what we see in parts of the Middle East, where given the choice between living a life on the run or blowing yourself up and going to paradise is predicated on that idea.

And frankly, very few people want to hear lengthy explanations on the justification of Catholic authority or another explanation. Totally surrendering your independent thought as a man to the whims of a group composed of men is regarded as repulsive.

You are going to come to realize that often it’s better to remain ambiguous when you ask for time off - you know, something along the lines of “I have a standing appointment twice a week”. Let them have a blast guessing who your appointment is with! In my experience, unless you are relatively certain that a co-worker or boss is Christian-friendly, it might be best to keep the personal info to yourself. After all, you have to actually WORK with these folks every day.

Ag_not, fret_not. It’s only Sunday Mass that is obligatory. As much as you’d like to go every day (and I understand, be content that you have the ability on Sunday (as not all in the world have that luxury). Perhaps, though, there are other parishes near you that offers the Mass later in the day. I hope you find a conservative orthodox church to nourish you. …And pray for your co-worker.

Lesson learned I think. It never occured to me that it would be a problem, I just gave the woman the reason I was asking as I thought it would be the polite thing to do. I’ll know better in future 😃

There’s not Im afraid - but i can get to Sunday mass no problem, and this experience has steeled my determination more to get to mass this sunday.
