Our deacon is going to be gone for a few days, so I’ve been asked to serve the morning Masses Thursday, Friday, and Monday 😃

I’m looking forward to it, but :gopray2: for me anyway.

Ideally your deacon shouldn’t be serving Mass anyways. Maybe you should do it everyday!!! 👍

Thats correct, Its not his role any more than the server performing the roles of the deacon in the context of the Mass.

Why shouldn’t the deacon be working the weekday Masses? For one thing, the deacon has some specific lines to say. For another, preparation of the Cup is the deacon’s job. And when he’s there, there isn’t enough work for both him and an Altar Geezer.

For the record, I’m not doing anything that should be done by an ordained man. I’m helping Father out because he’s disabled (bad knees, diabetic peripheral neuropathies in his feet).

(Oh, BTW, it went well)

Servers have specific duties which are unique to servers: Carrying the processional crucifix; preparing and processing the thurible and incense boat; preparing and holding the aspergillum and aspersorium; holding the Sacramentary at the opening and closing prayers; preparing the altar (putting out the corporal, a chalice and a purificator); placing the Sacramentary on a stand on the altar; often bringing the gifts of water and wine to the deacon or priest; performing the lavabo; ringing the sanctus bells; etc. etc.

These functions are properly handled by a server and not a deacon.

I’m glad it went well for you… 😃

So can a female be an Altar Geezer?

I’m sometimes a server because we just don’t have enough of them. The other two are an 11 year-old boy and a 13 year-old girl.

And me, a 60 year-old grandma.

(Our mission church only has Mass on Sunday.)

We have altar geezers, male and female, in our parish. They are one of the reasons why I attend Sunday Mass @ 7:30 AM.
