I’m sorry your professors didn’t include you in that “bonding time” but try to see things from their perspective. “Bonding” with female students is always a risk. Every man’s fear is to be accused of making an advance that could lead him to get fired when in fact in may have been no advance at all. I know because I work in academia and have that reservation. With male students, that’s not an issue. Also, would you blow off “female bonding” time or invite men to join you in it? In many cases I find women no more want to include men in their circles than men want women in ours. That’s an unfortunate fact of life and to deny it is naive.
The problem isn’t the lack of bonding time. It’s the blowing off questions of female students that are legitimately related to coursework, asked at an appropriate time, while spending time making off colour jokes with the guys. If you think that’s appropriate behavior for an instructor, perhaps you shouldn’t be in academia… or any position where your job is to relay information.
For the record, your type of attitude is why a lot of women don’t report things like the issue I discussed above: because if you report inappropriate behavior you’re treated like someone who is only after hurting men. It’s the attitude that causes sexual harassment and assault to be so under-reported. It’s the reason that a female receptionist needs to stand in and stare at me when I’m examined by my male doctor, or I’m not getting that exam. It’s the reason why I can’t go up to one of my male TA’s to discuss how I could have improved an assignment without him stating angrily that he’s not changing my grade, before completely ignoring me.
And guys are a part of my ‘female bonding time’ all the time. I have a group a friends, not a group of female friends and male friends. I can’t think of a time past 13 when guys weren’t a central part of even the most feminine ‘girl talk’ I had… unless it was with my mother or sister, in a confidential setting. I’ve had just as many of those conversations with my father and brother though. The only reason I’ve ever withheld information from my male friends while sharing it with my female friends is when that information is with regards to biological functions that my male friends don’t want discussed around them.
Also, it doesn’t matter if you turn down scholarships / assistance because it doesn’t change the fact that they are available to you and not men. Most women will accept them and a needle in the haystack like yourself isn’t going to change men’s outlook when nearly every other woman accepts her entitlements.** It is entirely improbably to expect every man to sit down and find out how how many entitlements you accepted before you earn their respect. It’s inappropriate to ask and a waste of time better spent on the tasks at hand. **
You’re right, it is inappropriate because my grades/performance should speak for itself in the same way it does for the men. But it doesn’t.
I’m not asking to be grilled about my finances, because that’s inappropriate. I’m asked to be given the benefit of the doubt that I’m not some mooching slacker who trades sexual favours to the men who obviously do my work for me (sarcasm) in the same way that men are.
That is because we find some women do thing just to prove that women can do them. They don’t necessarily care about the challenge itself, only the satisfaction of saying a woman can do it. Men didn’t go to the moon to prove men can do it. We did it because we were genuinely interested in the moon.
You’re absolutely right. When a MAN accomplishes something, it’s because he wants to do it for science. When a WOMAN does it, she’s trying to show those evil men who’s boss.

She couldn’t possibly, oh I don’t know, enjoy and be good at math and science when she enters an engineering program.
Let me tell you, I’ve never met a female engineer who was there to prove women could become engineers. They were there because it’s a good job that deals with her interests. Perhaps you’re projecting your anger on them?
Americans went to the moon to stick it to the Russians, and for science. In that order. That entire inappropriate, superior, sexist paragraph highlights the problems women face more clearly than I ever could. Thank you, for making my point for me.
Let’s stop throwing a sheet over the lion in the room hoping it will go away as far as feminism is concerned. Most feminists do not think men can be feminists. Most
loud feminists who you have heard. Our new Pope has said a constant policy of feminism denies woman the dignity she deserves so as Pope Francis is now the leader of the Church he is not espousing feminism as JPII did. Pick and choose what you want but lets not ignore the big picture so the “girls club” can be preserved on pride. Pick and choose what you want, but let’s not ignore the big picture that a woman can’t enter academia or the workforce in a non-traditional field without being accused of ulterior motives, assumed to be less competent despite evidence to the contrary, required to work harder to earn the same amount of money and respect, and be treated like lesser beings because, apparently, all women want to do is falsely accuse men of sexual harassment while proving how inferior their male colleagues are.
