Hey all,
I asked in the Eastern forum for moving icons that depict resurrection imagery for a presentation to my seminary classmates. But I was wondering if anyone could suggest to me their favourite or most powerful images of the Resurrection from any tradition? Thanks.

Hello,

In the Eastern iconographic tradition, there are two icons that depict the Resurrection. One is called the Anastasis or in English “Descent Into Hades” (or various other English translations). The other is the Resurrection. These two (especially the former) are both icons of this Mystery, because they constitute a single moment in time - though for us, we have to wait in anxious anguish for three days. I do believe that the icon of the Anastasis is much more common and popular among our Eastern brethren. But whichever one is depicted, in Byzantine iconography, Christ is always shown coming forth through a mandorla - which is not necessarily the case in Latin or Oriental (Syriac or Coptic) iconography.
