When I was 18 I had an abortion. I was not a practicing Catholic at the time. It’s a horrible thing to try to recover from. I’m 38 and need to know what I can do to make things right between the Church and myself. Is it possible? I just recently found out that I’m “excommunicated” because of my abortion and don’t know what to do. I sent my local bishop an email but have not heard from him. I’m ashamed and don’t know where to turn.

You are remorseful and God is merciful - your sin can be forgiven! Make an appointment to talk to your confessor as soon as possible. He may be able to remit your excommunication and absolve you of all of your sins right away.

For more details on the remission of your automatic excommunication see How are automatic excommunications for abortion lifted?
