rummaged about for ages, in the back of the car looking for the keys, as they were still in the car door and he could not see them, then smashed groceries and stole money. Car was found later burnt out. Needless to say I didn’t get to mass and now ash wednesday - I don’t think I’ll go tonight as I’m really dizzy and weird - prob. post shock and I’d be in my own again, getting parked etc… At the time, I was so calm and prayed for the person who took it, now I’m scared off anyone coming towards me and am very wary and thinking the worst of people, very little compassion now for others. I know it was only a few days ago - but it just proves how a ‘sin’ can affects others in a cascade effect. I’m not too sure what I want to say about it all, but maybe there are more in hell than I thought - at one point, I thought most people got to heaven, but when you’ve nasty nutters like that guy about, then who knows.

This may seem a stupid question but I assume I have not committed a mortal sin, not getting to mass? I will fast today but see that ash wednesday is not a holy day (i always thought it was), hence I may not attend. I may go later, but I have had to hire a car and I am not too sure about driving it esp. in the dark.

I hope I chose the correct forum to post this in.

Having to deal with a robbery before Mass sounds like a reasonable impediment to me. You can and should talk to a priest about it but you also have to understand that highly stressful and unexpected events may and will divert our focus from what is very important to us. The fact that you are concerned about the state of your soul is a strong indicator that your conscience is quite well formed on the topic. Talking to a priest will probably help you dealing with the fact that you have missed Mass, but it will also help you dealing with the robbery and learning how to forgive. Forgiveness in cases like this is also for our own good and it allows us to move on without being in a constant state of fear.

Thanks, Cristiano - I had to go to the police station after the robbery so I didn’t have much choice - it was a late mass, I had been going to attend. I forgave him immediately afterwards,I am now just ‘annoyed’ at how ‘his’ sin has affected me in being suspicious of others and much less trusting.

Ash Wednesday, while it is an important day, is not a Holy Day of Obligation, so even if you didn’t have extenuating circumstances preventing your attendance at Mass, you incur no sin by not going.

That said, I hope that the perpetrator is brought to justice and, more importantly, I hope that you are alright. Be assured of my prayers.

I’m so very sorry this happened to you, I can understand you feeling less trusting now, the truth is we all have to be careful nowdays. I’m glad your ok and they didn’t hurt you physically. You did get your keys back I hope or I would have my house locks changed, as they could of seen your address on your ins. cert and registration.

God Bless You.

Thanks for the prayers and advice.

Thankyou and fortunately, I was not hurt. No, the police did not find the keys with the car, and you are correct he could look up my address. Fortunately, i’m in an apt block and they have changed my own flat door lock - although if he kept the keys he may have the ‘duffer’ to electronically open up the main block door. Actually, maybe I’ll mention that to them tomorrow.

Try to stop him? To what purpose? To get bashed or worse and then have the car keys taken anyway?
You’re right, he should have called the police after letting the guy do his thing. If he’d done that, he’d still have a car that doesn’t smell like it was made to cook brisket.

Oh… wait…

As a 120lb female against a 180 +lb male that may have a gun/knife - do the maths. He smashed my mobile on the ground I couldnt use it. The police were too late to arrive before he zoomed off, smashed into an on-coming car on the road and then ricocheted of another parked car and then zoomed on up the road.

Didn’t realize you’re a slight woman.

Now, don’t you wish Ireland’s gun laws weren’t so restrictive? 🙂

Armed women don’t become victims as easily.

Since you are a victim to the law, I’ll add this addendum: assume what I said as if you were a man.

Absolutely not! Then he would no doubt have had a gun and pointed at me until he got the keys and possibly shot me by mistake.

Texas Woman…

A Woman From Houston, Texas Was Arrested, Jailed, And Charged With Manslaughter For Shooting A Man 6 Times In The Back As He Was Running Away With Her Purse. ~
The following Monday morning, the woman was called in front of the arraignment Judge, sworn-in, and asked to explain her actions.
The woman replied, "I was standing at the corner bus stop for about 15 minutes, waiting for the bus to take me home after work. I am a waitress at a local cafe. I was there alone, so I had my right hand on my pistol in my purse hanging on my left shoulder. All of a sudden I was spun around hard to my left. As I caught my balance, I saw a man running away with my purse. I looked down at my right hand and saw that my fingers were wrapped tightly around my pistol. The next thing I remember is saying out loud, “No Way Punk! You’re not stealing my pay check and tips.” I raised my right hand, pointed my pistol at the man running away from me with my purse, and started squeezing the trigger of my pistol!
When asked by the arraignment judge, "Why did you shoot the man 6 times?
The woman replied under oath, “Because, when I pulled the trigger the 7th time, it only went click.”
The woman was acquitted of all charges. She was back at work the next day!

That’s Gun Control Texas Style

Is the life of a thief running away less important than the purse he has stolen?

And why didn’t you stop him?

In my home country this type of theft is fairly common and the advice the police and similar organizations give is always to step out of and away from your vehicle and let the thief take it, your life is worth more than your car.
Absolutely not! Then he would no doubt have had a gun and pointed at me until he got the keys and possibly shot me by mistake.
And unless you had your gun in your hand already, there’s little chance that you would have been able to use it against the criminal.

Hope you are soon over the post-traumatic-stress of this incident, pepipop.

Have you ever had your property stolen? Property which could lead to your identity being stolen?
Are you saying that it is moral to kill a thief, that runs away, because he stole your purse?

BTW asking me if I had property stolen is a red herring and has nothing to do with the argument on the morality of killing someone while he is not a clear and present danger to your life or the life of innocent people.

??

How would a street criminal get the money/pass a background check to get a gun??

A terrible incident, I hope you are able to feel secure again. You could get yourself a good dog.
