I had to put my dog down last saturday

Last saturday the day before i went on vacation i had to put down my best buddy down. Her name was maddie a 16 year old lab-shepherd mix…and finally arthritis and tumors got her. I walk in my backyard and feel such loss…she was there for me when my wife passed away 4 years ago and she was there on many happy occasions too. She loved to play ball and never growled at anyone in 16 years i really do miss her …just had to get it out thanks…Joe:(
 
So sorry to hear that Joe. My pooch is about 11 and I don’t know what I’d do without her. Such a pest sometimes, but wouldn’t trade her for any other dog. God be with you…
 
Joe, I understand you miss your dog Maddie like you’d your best friend who has been there for all the good and bad times, and was there as companion when you lost your wife, and no doubt tried to comfort you in her way at that time. She sounds beautuful. I’m sorry you’re having to go through this loss. She would haved loved you the best she possibly could. There is something so utterly lovely about the devotion of one’s dog. It seems to me that you receive something of God’s love and goodness through a faithful animal. Only the one who loves her knows how true that is.

Joe take care of yourself. We can’t be there, but :coffee: :coffee:

Joe, I am SO SORRY for your loss. I had to put down my beloved 20 year old kitty in February and I thought I might never stop crying! It’s amazing how we tailor our lives around our precious pets and when they are gone, there is so much empty space!

Do you have a picture you can post of your sweet Maddie?
 
Joe, I am so sorry that you now have to come home to a home without your dear friend Maddie. The welcome home from a faithful and loving pet is unique and we miss it so much when it can no longer occur.

Take care and spend time with people who understand how you feel and will be supportive - I too would like to see a photo of Maddie.

Hang in there, partner. I know what you mean. One of our dachunds is reaching that point. Her legs are giving out. She’s 13, and might have some time left, but soon won’t be able to walk. It’s hard. They become true family members.

i think having to make the decision to having a pet put down is one of the hardest i have ever had to make. i am an animal lover, so i have owned several dogs throughout my 56 years from rescued dogs to dogs bought at pet stores. it is so painful when it comes to that time in a pet’s life. and the ride to the veterinarian when it is just you and the pet in the car has to be the worst moments. they don’t know where you are taking them. i am usually crying and trying to explain to them that i don’t want to see them suffering anymore. finally, after my last dog, i said that is enough. no more pets for me. i have one 19 year old cat left. i get too attached to the dogs and it is so empty in my home when they are gone. the thoughts of your maddie will always be there and you will feel the loss just like the loss of a loved human. pets become such a part of our families and our lives. they are so special to us.

My heart goes out to you. The love of a family pet is so unconditional. God knew what He was doing when He put these wonderful creatures on earth. I have always told my children that if I ever have to go to an assisted living facility, I won’t go unless it is one that allows a companion dog. God bless.

I’m sorry for your loss…pets really are family, too! I will pray that God gives you solace during this sad time for you.
 
So sorry Joe for this loss. I too am an animal lover and know the heartache of losing such a companion. I don’t know what I will do when our current dog dies:(.

My daughter and I stopped by the local no-kill shelter’s adopt-a-thon outside Wal-Mart today. They had some really cute dogs needing homes! They were gone by the time I got my husband to go over there, he is dead set against us getting a dog right now but, he is sort of right, we have three cats, a dog and two guinea pigs right now.

I look forward to seeing a picture of your beloved pet.

I am so sorry for your loss. A pet is so much a part of the family…I know that my dear cat, Lily Daisy, is so precious to me. I cannot even imagine anything more painful, than to lose her…such a faithful friend.
I remember reading a quote from Sir Walter Scott, after the death of his dog. He said that “God is merciful in making their life span so much less than ours, because if he had lived to be 30 or 40, the loss would surely have killed me”…and I thought, how true that is…They give so much, & they ask so little in return…

So precious! She looks like she’s just about ready to say something! Maybe something like, “thanks for a great life!”.

There is no short cut around the grief we feel when we lose our beloved pets BUT it does get easier.

I got another kitty about 2 months after I put down my beloved Kiwi. “Lucy” is a delight BUT I still miss my old girl. Sometimes I slip and call the new girl by the old girl’s name. Sometimes I wish the new girl would be more like the old girl and sleep in my bed with me (Lucy sleeps UNDER the bed!) and spend more time in my lap! Sometimes I run across a picture of the old girl in my pictures file on the computer and get all teary. BUT it’s SO much better than it was! It gets easier with time!

oh, what a sweet face she has. she looks like a true friend. i am always thankful that i had the pet as part of my life. we share so much with them.
the good times and the bad times. they feel our tears and our sadness and our smiles and laughter. just think how blessed you were to have her for the time that you did.

What a wise looking dog, what a great companion she clearly was.
 
I feel your pain. Whenever I see my older Dachshund limp and fall down, I feel a pain in my stomach. Her time is near.

Yep, that’s definitely a good dog…Cherish her memories, thank God we have these special friends that ask so little for all the love and companionship they give us…Simon
