It was fun, and it was the right thing to do. It’s a valuable expression of important Christian values. . . good to see this issued. 🙂

Just became the 80,000th signature!

Sancta Maria, Mater Dei, Ora Pro Nobis Peccatoribus!

Wow, it’s up to 80,000 signatures? When I signed it Sunday (after an announcement at Mass) it was only 17,000. Deo gratias!!!

What exactly is the Manhattan Declaration? o:
check out the link in post #2. It has the declaration in it’s entirety. It’s basically a call to stand up for the sanctity of life, traditional marriage and religious freedom.

Yeah, I think this could be a wildfire kind of thing----there’s a lot of sentiment favoring this that has not received much public or media attention.

I love the closing paragraph…

“Because we honor justice and the common good, we will not comply with any edict that purportsto compel our institutions to participate in abortions, embryo destructive
research, assisted suicide and euthanasia, or any other anti-life act; nor will we bend to any rule purporting to force us to bless immoral sexual partnerships, treat them as marriages or the equivalent, or refrain from proclaiming the truth, as we know it, about morality and immorality and marriage and the family. We will fully and ungrudgingly render to Caesar what is Caesar’s. But under no circumstances will we render to Caesar what is God’s.”

Oh, okay! In that case, I’ll sign up too! 🙂

Edit: I was signature #80808.

I agree with the premise of it.

But I also think it’s a complete waste of time. We have already had instances where these so-called “original signers” could have shown up and demonstrated their support for an issue… have they? Have they even given a public opinion on those instances? More to the point, will they?

It’s one thing to say on paper that you would (in theory) support civil disobedience. It’s another thing altogether to show up and be dragged off by the police. Do you imagine for one second the Cardinal and few Bishops who signed it will do that? I don’t.

But I could be wrong. I’ll apologize and change my stance when I see them posting bail.

While I have not yet seen Bishop Cordelione hauled off to jail, he HAS been a vocal presence in the pro-life community for quite some time. I don’t think you necessarily have to be arrested to make your point. He and Bishop Chaput have both been absolute champions in the pro-life movement. I can’t speak for the others, as I didn’t look at all of the signatures, but those are the two I immediately recognized for their public stance on life issues. These guys aren’t just pro-life from their cozy little offices…they’re right there in the trenches, standing up for the dignity of every human being. God bless them!

Certainly they are, I don’t doubt that a bit. But this document isn’t talking about proclaiming the truth of an issue from the comfort of an office. This document is proposing a willingness and a call to civil disobedience. You don’t cause or participate in that from an office; you do that by being disobedient to civil authority and getting arrested.

I don’t believe many of those “orginal signers” are going to go do that.

Apparently you misread my post. I just said that they were NOT proclaiming the truth from their offices, but were out in the trenches.

Have they been arrested? Not to my knowledge, but then again, neither have I, and I am visibly, vocally active in the pro-life movement. Sometimes civil disobedience is necessary, and I have seen clergy members being hauled away. I’ve also seen those who will go to the press before hand and say “come watch me get arrested!” This strikes me as being more than ego than passion for the cause.

When I think back upon the civil rights activities in the 60’s…it wasn’t the fact that the people were arrested that mattered…it was the fact that they took a stand (Or in the case of Rosa Parks…a sit!)

Signed it. Passed it on. When that number climbs high enough, it will have the desired effect. BTW, Bill O’Reilly mentioned it on his show last night. It’s picking up steam as word spreads.

I just signed it as well. It’s now up to 124,953. Very good to see.

. . . frankly, given the indications from England and Canada, we really DO have to be willing to explore the peaceful use of civil disobedience in the near future.

I agree with all three points being addressed and glad that they are getting petitions.

Signed it.
