I’ve posted in prayers section a few months ago about me hating to live in this neighborhood where mostly are Muslims. They never do anything wrong though, as far as I know.

I guess I complained too much… I don’t know, I just feel wrong to live here… I don’t know why.

I don’t feel like I want to interact with them… Maybe I think too much, because the Muslims stance of not to be friends with Christians (in one of the passages in their Quran). But in general, they seem to be quite nice I think.

What you feel is just normal human reaction. Their ways are not our ways. Do you have a chance to move to an area where you feel you would live better ? Try to always be nice to them and be courteous but I understand the feeling of being in a community with people of different faith.

I don’t know what kind of Muslims they are (if they are troublemakers or fundamentalist, making the neighbourhood unsafe), but one thing I do like about them is that they are more often modest and family-oriented than the secular population where I live.

Perhaps like the disciples the Lord sent out to the gentiles and strange lands you are called to be that light shining in the darkness! Praise and thank God for putting you there. Jesus was never overly concerned with his disciple’s comfort-ability otherwise he wouldn’t have asked them and us to pick up our crosses and follow Him.

In one area I lived, there were women from Malaysia that dressed very differently from how we dressed. I remember they were SO nice and SO friendly to me…very kind.

It’s been decades, but you know, I never forgot their kindness towards me. At the time, I didn’t even know anything about Islam, but their kindness alone would have made me more receptive, both towards them (as friends) and Islam, in general. I sometimes wonder if, due to such fanaticism within it, that all Muslims have ended up getting a bad rap, and unfairly, so.

I don´t know if I’ve ever had a Muslim as a friend, because most of the time, I have lived in areas where there weren’t many. However, I know the ones I came across in college wered always VERY kind, even sweet to me. During the International Day, they gave us these jelly beans woven in palm leaves. It was so different, cute, sweet.

I also have seen some Muslim women dress, and I admit I think they can be SO incredibly beautiful! I remember seeing one in the library once in Islamic dress. I even told her she was beautiful, because she was, the way she dressed…so different, exotic, for us…beautiful in the extreme.

I admit I like crossing paths with foreign people. In fact, I live in Mexico…going on 11 years, but I remember from little liking other cultures. Once, we had a boy in our class from Nigeria, and the teacher told him he was from another country, to be very nice to him. I tried to speak to him after class, but he still couldn’t understand English.

Later, I played checkers with him, and for a time, he was my best friend.

I have also had friends from China…different places.

I’ve taught ESL. I have friends in Costa Rica, the US, Mexico, and from Colombia and all over the country, and world.

I don’t think I know any Muslims here, but if I did, I think I’d actually go out of my way to be nice to them, to make them feel included. If they didn’t want to associate with me, so be it.

I wouldn’t talk about religion, unless it was to ask questions, learn more, but not to bring it up to divide…rather to unify.

I know Mother Teresa had friends from all kinds of faiths, worked side by side with faiths…Hindu, Muslim, etc. I’m no expert, but there were times in my life I used my faith to divide, but now, I try not to do that any more.

I focus on what we share in common, go on my path, let them go on theirs. I would be friendly, and kind to them. If it’s true they don’t want to be friends with Christians, or Catholics, that’s unfortunate for all concerned. I would, as I say, be nice to them, kind, approachable, and if it still didn’t work, I’d allow them to live in peace. Realize, too, they have probably had a lot of bad experiences, and might also be gun shy.

You just need to focus on being a loving kind hearted Christian and when you focus on this instead of who your neighbors are then it isn’t going to matter what religion they are or are not. Maybe you live in this kind of area to be a witness of Christ’s love and compassion and that will plant seeds in their hearts for Christ. See your neighborhood as an opportunity.

I have gone to school and work with Muslims, and have yet to have a problem with any of them. They deal with many of the same issues that we do, family, kids, work, and the issues of the world. We can have pleasant conversations about our respective faiths and beliefs, as well as events in the Middle East.

I suspect there may be a range within Islam of people who are more conservative and less conservative in their faith.

Maybe with some, they might be a little more open to friendship with those of other faiths.

I went through one stage where I didn´t want to be friends with anybody but Catholics, but now, I see that as a mistake…like when I also didn’t want to be friends with those of other political views.

If I were to try, and later feel SO unhappy and uncomfortable, I guess I would probably consider moving to where I’d feel happier. I’m sorry you’ve had a bad experience.

The better focus isn’t what religion a majority of his neighbors are or are not but on being a kind, loving Christian to those around him. When one’s focus is this, it isn’t going to matter what religion his neighbors are. Unless one lives in an unsafe area with a high crime rate or Op has had some threats, there isn’t a reason to complain about his neighbors. Of course if one doesn’t like where they live, then they should move. I think this question is a bit of a bate because it looks to be designed to bring up anti-Muslim comments. That hasn’t happen but this is a rather odd question because the answer is to move if one feels unsafe where they live. The best is to be a loving Christian to those around you regardless of their religion.

Thank you all for responding.

I will move if I have somewhere else to go. But I currently don’t have money to get a place to stay.

Well, I will try to be nice to them. Maybe my own socially awkward person as well that made me unable to socialize well. And I just want to rant somehow…

Pray for me so I can change to be better…

Note: I live in Indonesia, where mostly are moderate Muslims here and they are all pretty nice. Although people in this neighborhood are not that educated. This information is just to give a view, not as a base to look down on them.

Today our readings in Mass were about the lepers in the Old Testament and in the days of Jesus. Our priest mentioned when the first hispanic family moved into his neighborhood when he was growing up and his dad remarked “there goes the neighborhood”. He asked how it would feel to be ostracized. I guess it doesn’t hurt to smile and say hello.

Innocent until proven guilty!

Oh, well, I don’t know. Just because society is obsessed with diversity and being different a midst PC sniffling :bighanky: doesn’t mean that people won’t usually live among people who look, act and think like them. In fact that is the case in many places, whether people like it or not.

You may be friends with someone who is different, but don’t become delusional about them or that you’ll be rewarded somehow if they “take over” the place just because you know them.

Sounds silly, but you may be surprised what some people think.

That’s how the market works! :yup:

That’s more like comparing apples and oranges, frankly, and the situation sounds like it’s maybe reversed here.

It’s important to be nice to our neighbors, new and old, but it’s also important to be smart and wary of scandal. Some government polices and some race/religion based organizations are looking to enforce an ideology through relocation of persons and demographics.
