You guys know what I’m talking about. This morning I was listening to Norman Greenbauch’s ‘Spirit in the Sky’, and I scroll down just a little bit mostly to look at other videos and I see a holy war going on in the comments. Atheists making it clear they are atheists despite the fact that it’s only a rock song, people going on about Greenbauch being Jewish so the song absolutely must be mocking Christianity, so on and so forth.

I hate the Youtube comment section.

The website viewpure.com/ allows one to search youtube videos and watch them without the comment section. One solution!

You can turn on “safesearch” as well, which will turn off the comments section.

I truly think the Youtube comments section is a lightning rod for the dumbest people on the internet. And that’s saying something.

Most internet comment sections are full of trolls and people with too much time on their hands. They hide under the anonymous rock and say things they would never say in person; avoid ruining your day by skipping the entire section. 😛

Yea, I quit reading online newspapers because of these comment sections. Some of the comments just ruined my day. Especially those about religion

Indeed. Avoid it like the plague. As a wise man once said: “You will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy.”

I used to moderate the comments on songs for some Christian bands. I don’t miss it.

I spend a lot of time on YouTube (making playlists for students and enjoying a few favorite entertainers). I pay no more concern or attention to the comment section than I do to any other conversation among middle school students. 🤷

Seriously, who cares?

Kudos to you for digging Spirit In The Sky, the best (in my humble opinion) one-hit wonder of all time!

Equally one-hit for the 80’s remake by Fuzzbox (a.k.a. We’ve Got a Fuzzbox) from England.

Norman was a neighbor of mine. Used to hear him play guitar out of his window. The song was certainly a creative one-hit wonder though not the best of Alltime.

As a musician, with some on air radio experience, I’d crown Wild Cherry - Play That Funky Music as one of the greatest one hit wonders. The track was played all over urban stations and the band even got an invite on Soul Train - much of the audience was quite shocked when the band showed up and was white. A real nod for racial diversity! Heh

Everyone has an opinion, and, they all stink to someone!

Gotta say Spirit in the Sky is one of my all time favs!

It’s easy enough to just watch the video. Who says you have to scroll down to the Comments section? I know there are comments down there, but I don’t read them.

My teenage daughter reads them. Is this a “social media” thing that I’m too old to get? 🤷

I think some people have an urge to read everything on a webpage, but I personally have outgrown this. However for the sake of those who don’t, many YouTube video creators (including EWTN) have disabled comments. Many news sites have also disabled comments.

Sadly, much of the commentary on World News even in CAF is barely above the quality of Youtube comments, but guess what, I don’t read the vast majority of topics there anymore.

I like how ‘Spirit in the Sky’ manages to be gospel-y and psychedelic in equal measure.
Norman, (a non-practicing Jew) noted he got the song concept from Porter Wagoner’s show {that Porter could do a religious song}, Norman noted (on the video interview below) he was never real religious but it interested him.

I learned from one of those music streaming services in a restaurant that he retired from the music business to become a farmer (although in an article I found just now online he said a ‘sous-chef’ - I guess he would know). But he was raised in an observant Jewish household in Malden, MA.
