I hate this popular saying!

I think he just told you to bugger off - your project is too much work for too little return. 😛
hahahaha Maybe?😃 He was speaking to sales people (me being one) about in general–what we should and should not be doing for our clients. hahaha You are close! Everyone talks in riddles where I work! (even me sometimes)😊

What bugs me is how this saying seems to be linked to “be true to yourself”.🤷

Of course one doesn’t want one’s children to follow the crowd that leads them to promiscuous behavior, drug abuse, rotten attitude, materialism. One wants their children to stand firm against all the pressure to conform to society’s standards. One doesn’t want one’s children to abandon their dreams just because they’re unpopular with the rest of society. But then you get those people who will twist it to mean all that you should do what you want and to hell with the rest of the world (including your parents and God:eek: ).

Maybe we should revamp these sayings:newidea: : “Follow the Sacred Heart” and “Be true to God”.
Yes to revamping the sayings. 🙂 But we have to teach kids to ignore some of the more stupid messages that are coming out of the media. I talk to my kids constantly about these subtle messages.

I have known Christians to justify bad behavior by saying that God wants me to be happy. I think that saying is from a similar mindset as ‘just follow your heart.’

"Going forward . . . ", "Peel the onion . . . ", “Exactly!”, "At this point in time . . . ", "Yeah, no . . . ", “Gone missing”, “Other side of the pond”, “Basically”, “. . . per se.”, “On the same page”, “Full plate”, "Listen, ", “skin a cat”, “in the ditch”, and “Square one”.

But I’m kind of cranky.

:rotfl: oh my gosh–that phrase is overkilled here where I work…hahaha

Here’s one of the conference calls I was on recently…

“…at the end of the day, when the rubber meets the road…the bottom line becomes…that we shouldn’t be expected to swim the ocean.”

WHAT DID THAT GUY JUST SAY?😃 :rotfl:
All of that in one conversation:eek: :rotfl: ? In the words of my Dear Mother, OY VEY!😃

I know, I am no fun whatsoever. Who am I to tell people not to follow their hearts. Do I want everyone miserable? 😛

Interesting about it being women who mainly get hurt by these types of sayings. I had never thought about it before but I think that might be true.
Yes, it’s true. A man won’t be hurt by those types of sayings, because a man must harden his heart so he won’t hurt, and never show it if he does hurt. When a woman leaves us, we WILL get over it. We have a responsibility to maintain the bulwark and move on. You never know what your’re going to get, but you will take it, no matter how hard. It is the true measure of a man to remain steadfast and strong.

(hint - we have other sayings that we follow, so we aren’t hurt by all that heart stuff. That heart stuff would destroy us.) 😉

edit - yeah, I think that “follow your heart” saying is bunk in real life… but it does make for a touching movie.

Yeah, it’s stupid. Ignore it.
If you have daughters you might want to discuss this issue with them and see if they are, unbeknownst to you, swallowing this hook, line and sinker(sorry, I had to put a cliche’ in there:p )

If you have daughters you CAN’T ignore this. Its surprising how this message gets played over and over in children’s movies. This is a very easy message for girls and some boys to fall prey to.

I can’t help but wonder if some of our worst societal problems aren’t based on the same selfish mindset that produces such sayings as, “Follow your heart.”

Ready for some fun? Before your next meeting go to isd.usc.edu/~karl/Bingo/ print up some cards and you’re ready to play Buzzword Bingo!

I work for a non-profit agency so I’d have to customise mine to include “sanctuary” (the hot new buzzword on the block, “family-centered” (or -centric), “client”, &c.

Maybe we could do Romance bingo – next time a chick flick is on TV do a card with “follow your heart”, “just let yourself go” (more wise advice), “live for now”, &c, &c, ad nauseum.

Wonder no more. 😉

This thread is spot on about “Follow you heart”.

Another saying that is bothersome to me is “Keep the faith.” Faith in what, exactly? Of course, faith in God is a good thing, but it bugs me when people use it outside of this context.

Sayings like these are so generic. If they can mean anything you want them to mean, that makes them basically meaningless!

 My English professor loved Joseph Campbell’s advice “Follow your bliss.”

Well, I guess if you think, “Jesus.” when you hear bliss, then it’s a pretty good slogan.

I have always viewed ‘follow your heart’ as being follow what your feelings dictate. Our feelings are important, but they change. (thus change of heart:newidea: ) So…telling someone to follow God’s will, is much more effective than following one’s fickle heart.😉

Check out this site for what can happen when you follow your heart. Please understand that these women are getting an abortion because they are using their emotions as gauges to decide what is right.😦

abortionclinicdays.blogs.com/abortionclinicdays/2007/11/does-god-know-w.html

Overwhelmingly, what I found, instead was that most women had already gone to God, prayed upon their decision and felt a sense of resolution and right action. Despite whatever their religious leadership preach about abortion or sex, most of the women I counsel have found a very personal connection to God in their journey through thier pregnancy. They have gone to Him for counsel and find His love to be a sense of comfort. It’s not “what does your church teach you about abortion,” that I ask women now, it’s “does He know what’s in your heart?”

**Marnie had chosen to have a medical abortion and we discussed what that would feel like for her. “It is very important for me to take responsibility for this,” she said, “and do it myself.” She had had a prior miscarriage and felt confident that she could work through the cramping and bleeding as the pregnancy passed. This was going to be private, sacred time, she explained. She had prepared her bedroom at home, bought a new bible and had selected some scripture that she felt spoke to her situation. “I need this to be respectful,” she said, “Me and the baby are going to work through this together.” **
That is just disgusting. That woman’s heart is leading her far from heaven (unless she repents).

Sorry to be judgmental, but I’m pretty sure righteous anger over the murder of a precious soul is OK with God.

That is crazy! Aren’t you thankful to not be married to a selfish person like that.
I know! Praise God that I escaped. And we were engaged for a long time, too. I have seen him lately, wandering around dazed and gaunt. I think he followed his own heart or impulses anyway into some illness that may be largely from drinking, never resting etc. Following the kindly advice of most people he knows might have done him more good IMO but then I guess I wouldn’t know anything because I’m just a prude.

How sad for his family. We all owe a responsibility to those who love us not to purposely destroy ourselves. But the saying ‘follow your heart.’ puts the individual’s changing emotions ahead of those that love him. 😦
