If you’re Catholic, go to Confession about this, if you haven’t already done so, or if you have done this since your last Confession. Next, I say seek a spiritual director, or speak to any priest that you can trust, about this. This type of tendency to sin usually has some underlying causes, and you need to get to the root of the emotional issues that are causing this, and receive healing from them, in order to kick this habit. This is what helped me when I was struggling with this problem as a teenager - try as I might, I couldn’t get over it until I found healing for my past wounds in the Sacrament of Reconciliation and with the help and guidance of a wonderful priest (and of course spending time with Jesus
).
Another thing you can try doing is, every time you reach for that remote, remind yourself about Judgment Day. “In all you do, remember the end of your life, and then you will never sin.” (Sirach 9:36). This might help put that little moment of pleasure into perspective as far as the grand scheme of things - is it really worth it when you consider that you will have to face the Judge one day? That thought might help you overcome your moment of temptation, and help you regain control of the situation.
