I have a question about this verse

Hi Folks

I need help about understanding this verse (since i am very lousy with my bible knowledge)

Isaiah 45:7 :
I form the light and create darkness, i make peace and create calamity. I , the Lord , do all these things

A non believer was saying our God not only create light but also create darkness, meaning he also create evil thing!!!

So what can i tell him??

I guess my understanding is about the absence of’.
Darkness is not measured, only the intensity of light is measured.

Darkness is merely the absence of light.
Evil is the absence of Love.
Dispair is the absence of Hope.

I am confused, this is a semi-permanent state for me. Your “non believer” seems to believe in God.

God does not create “evil”, which is the absence of “good”, not “love”.

You might like to look at carm.org/diff/Isa_45_7.htm and mountainretreatorg.net/faq/create_evil.html.

What do you think of these sites?

I think you should tell your “non believer” that he is not as far from the Kingdom as he thinks.

Pray for him and encourage him in his search.

Thks for the site, i does help to explain .

Well this non believer frez is very prideful and claimed that he know more then what we Christian know, and he refuse to acknowledege that his own understanding of the bible is incorrect and thus keep throwing verse at us. I also hope he can accept Christ, but need patient to explain to him that bible is not a story book which he can simply read and understand it without the help of the church and Holy Spirit. And more over he done so much of research on Christianity, thus is not easy for me just to convince him within a short period of time about the beauty of our God.
 
Go back to Genesis one, God made the day light, and he made night, that is all that darkness in your text means, nothing more.

As for “create calamity”, that is speaking of natural disaster like in judgement. You can use the judgement of Sodom and Gomorrah as an example. The text is not saying that God created evil or sin. Go on to define Sin as simply disobedance to God’s law.

Genesis 1:

3 And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. 4 God saw that the light was good, and He separated the light from the darkness. 5 God called the light “day,” and the darkness he called “night.” And there was evening, and there was morning—the first day.
