Every now and then I like to tread into “enemy” territory and I read P.Z. Myers blog. It always interests me to see how the “other side” lives, I suppose. Anywho, I notice that on everything he writes, his minions eat it up and think he’s the greatest thing since sliced bread, but if anyone disagrees they’re all over them like a pack of wild dogs on a three-legged cat. They’re all so mean and hateful, and I kinda want to know why. They can’t debate rationally, and all they seem interested in is insulting and swearing. I’ve read some posts, and actually posted an opinon once, but never again. After I posted, I was told numerous times to do things to my body that would be very indecent, and one individual actually said he will “pray” that I get cancer and suffer a horrible death. Why do they have so much anger? I don’t get it. If anyone has an answer, please, send it out here, and maybe we can all figure out a positive way to deal with them.
Peace,
Shannon

I believe there is no single answer to your question. Each individual is likely to have a multitude of reasons. At the heart of it all may be that when one does not have the truth, one can only rely on intimidation and coercion to get you to believe as they do.

It’s fear that makes people act out; and it’s a lack of true belief in Christ that makes them write such words. They have apparently forgotten that we will be held accountable for every idle word, and the truth that by our fruits we will be known. If we don’t have the fruits of love, well we know who is instigating what we’re writing.

Here is a positive way to deal with them: pray for them and look at them as an example of how not to be.🙂

Who is P.Z. Myers?

Who is P.Z. Myers?
P.Z. Myers is a professor at a university in Minnesota and a staunch atheist. His disdain for anything religious is very overwhelming. He has a pretty good following as well among the young atheist crowd as well. He absolutely refuses to believe anything that could possibly remotely suggest God has/had a hand in creating the universe. I would link to his blog, but it’s filled with so much hate and vitriol for anything religious that it might actually work against us and get people to fall into his crazed way of thinking. Just know that he is anti-religious to the point of calling for his “minions” to steal the Eucharist and send it to him so he can desecrate them.

Dear Shannon, so now you know of a blog that you shouldn’t visit.

Peace,

Gail

That kind of hatred always makes me think “The lady doth protest too much.” If a person didn’t have some latent fear that God might be real, he wouldn’t be so hostile toward the idea. After all, I don’t believe in the Loch Ness monster, but I don’t fly off the handle when someone says they do believe in the Loch Ness monster. Why would I care what they believe? And I certainly wouldn’t insult or swear at a person just because I thought he was wrong about the Loch Ness monster. So when a self-proclaimed atheist flips out at the mention of religion, I always suspect there’s more going on than meets the eye.

Shannon,
If this description is true, that should answer you question as to why they are the way they are. They do not have God in their lives to hold value to and what you are experiencing is how our society and world itself would be if we didn’t have God in any of our lives.

I don’t know that it does answer the question. I’ve spoken to people who claim to be atheist who do not have the hate and anger that his followers seem to. I want to get inside their heads to see where it all comes from. Even if one doesn’t have God in their lives as we do, it still doesn’t give you the right to be a disrespectful d-bag.

WOW…I never heard of this guy before. I don’t know that you will ever be able to get inside their heads…just make sure they don’t get inside your head.

It sounds like it is time for you to brush the dust off of your feet and go on to the next town:)

God bless all!!!

if a person is not at least seeking to find answers in that mind frame, you wont have much success getting into their head. These people seem to be looking for a way to dehumanize others they consider weak for self satisfaction. Of course I am not saying all atheists are bad or have this agression, but if you could imagine a world dominated by atheists, you are looking at a extremely agressive society.

Sounds like the Devil has a very strong hold on this Myers person as well as his followers.

Best avoid contact with these people and say a Rosary for the enlightenment of their minds and souls at the hour of their deaths.

I agree entirely. In my own anger I’ve found that the most common reason I tend to fly off the handle about another’s ideas is that they have implications I don’t like. When I get very full of myself and think I know everything [which happens far to often], I internally interpret “what I don’t like” as “what I know is false”.

Suppose I believed in the Loch Ness monster. In truth, I think it is safe to suggest that neither you nor I has sufficient evidence either for or against our belief. The data is simply insufficient.

Yet you could easily begin an argument with me, saying that my belief is “just wishful thinking”, perhaps, without support. I could just as easily argue that your disbelief is just another example of pessimistic doubt. Neither of us has any scientific basis, but based on our arguments, we could easily begin to imagine examples to prove our positions.

The atheist’s view, I think, is that to introduce the living God into their conception of the universe would imply a limitation to their freedom of will. There would be a new ‘requirement’ in their life, in their heart - new expectations that they themselves did not invent. Because they have spent so much energy to try to find a complete view of Truth which would not limit their sense of freedom, they cannot, at this point, even fathom altering that view.

Being wrong, to them, has too significant a consequence: it would be death to their philosophy, which is at this point all they know or believe they can trust. To the secular, death is the endpoint; it is the ultimate thing they “don’t like”.

In that sense, and perhaps in that sense alone, I am able to see how all of us are susceptible to that kind of thinking; the fear of death is universal. To overcome it requires faith - faith in the Resurrection of Christ, faith in the grace of God.

Imagine what it must feel like to mistakenly believe that to arrive at that faith will kill you! I can see how someone might get a bit angry over that idea…

This might be the most logical answer possible. I would suppose the “loss” of one’s freedom would make them upset. Atheists do tend to have more “freedoms” because they don’t believe they will be held accountable for things they do in life. While we may be more reserved in regards to certain things, like premarital sex or drinking or drugs, if one doesn’t believe that they have to deal with consequences after their life they might be more likely to do those things.
And can they come after you, especially when you challenge their beliefs. The post that I commented on had to deal with doctor assisted suicide. I offered to them Pascal’s wager, because it doesn’t seem to hold much water while one seems to be going strong, but when you’re discussing intentional killing of yourself so you won’t suffer, if you’re wrong, that’s it. They wanted to hear nothing of it and told me so in several different ways.

I have not idea who this Myer’s fellow is and don’t really care. Instead I’d like to respond with a different viewpoint. In my experience there are folks of a certain personality type that exhibit this kind of hostile behavior. They are not confined to one belief system, however, and I do not believe that it is the belief system they adhere to that causes them to behave in such a way. Instead, I would posit that it is the personality type that dictates the behavior and they are able to rationalize such regardless of what belief system they chose. I’ve seen angry, hateful behavior such as that described exhibited by folks of many belief systems: Christians, including some Catholics (I’m sure we are all aware of fundamentalist types who are very angry and hateful - esp. to Catholics, and some Catholics whom I’ve seen on this board - most thankfully banned - who were very hate filled), non-Christians, Jews, Muslims, agnostics, etc. Some people are just mean.
