This question has been wandering around my brain for a while, it is this:

Do Jews still sacrifice lambs on the alter in a temple? If not, why not?

I do have kind of another question, it is my understanding that in Jesus’ time Jews were required to go to the Jerusalem Temple some three times or something like that. I know the Temple was destroyed but does that mean the rule that the Jews had to go there three times was destroyed too?

Thanks for your answers!
Zach

The answer to your first question comes out of your second; the temple was destroyed, so the sacrifices stopped. When the temple was destroyed, so was the levitical priesthood.

I don’t really know about your second one, but I would guess that that law was nullified when the temple was destroyed too.

Ok, but why? Why would God’s law to the Jews end just because the Temple was destroyed? I mean, God’s law didn’t get destroyed and the Jews had sacrifices in local places of worship didn’t they?

Thanks,
Zach

God’s law did not end. It is simply that since the Temple in Jerusalem no longer exists, and that is the only place where the sacrifice can be made, the sacrifices cannot be made.

I have a good friend and co-worker who is a very observant and studious Jewess. She believes that the Temple will be rebuilt and that the sacrifices will resume. The small detail of the Muslim shrine, the Dome of Rock, where legend has it that Mohamed ascended into Heaven despite the fact that he died several hundred miles away in Medina, which occupies the site of the temple notwithstanding. Even if the Dome of Rock were destroyed in a natural disaster, there would be a widespread War about what would be built on that site. And when I say War, I mean I hope they do not use nukes.

Anyway, if the Temple were somehow rebuilt, and the cloud of radioactive fallout from the war is less toxic than we fear, Jews will certainly be required to once again go to the Temple and sacrifice.

Maybe they’ll sacrifice mutants?

Note that the situation is similar to the Babylonian Captivity, when they went for many years without Temple or sacrifice.

The Samaritans (who are descendants of the 10 tribes of the Northern Kingdom) maintain the practice of sacrificing animals.

Can you be a little more clear. Are you saying there is a modern people known as Samaritans and they sacrifice animals?

In an unrelated matter, this just occurred to me. If the Jews ever actually manage to rebuild the Temple in Jerusalem and resume animal sacrifice as desribedf by the Law of Moses, would would PETA do?

Haha, didn’t they get mad when President Obama killed a fly on TV?
