I would say that because of worldliness, and being in the culture of death, many miss their calling. I recall reading somewhere that 1 in 6 have a call to the religious life. If this is true, many, many are missing their calling in this life. Also, many do not propose the religious life to their children. Finally, another big reason is that most don’t pray for vocations. When you consider that 75% of those calling themselves Catholic in this country don’t even attend Mass on Sunday or holy days, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that we don’t get more priests.

Another reason is a matter of family size.

When a family consisted of 4 or more children, the notion of one of them heading off into the priesthood or vowed religious wasn’t a problem for most parents–they would still find opportunity through their other children to enjoy grandchildren.

But in today’s society, the average family is fewer than 2 children. When a family has only one child, perhaps the parents may be more likely to discourage religious life. Combined with a downward spiral in religious attendance or affiliation, this might lead us to an answer.

Here is the CARA statistics for the 2011 ordinations

Siblings
0 = 4%
1 = 19%
2 = 24%
3 = 16%
4 = 13%
5 or more = 24%

As for the original question in the US there are 1850 faithful for a priest, worldwide 4500 faithful for a priest. Others need more the priest.

There is no shortage of Priests. In 1978 when Karol became pope, there were seventy eight thousand seminarians in the states. Now, there’s one-hundred seventy-eight thousand in the states. There isn’t a shortage of Priests. Rather, a Priest misplacement issue. In my diocese there will be four Priests in one Church, while the other is dying out because there is no permanent Priest there.
