I have a suggestion

I notice questions being asked that to me are quite nosey in their nature. How much do you give at church, do catholics partake communion unworthily, etc…

Here’s a thought. Before you post a question, ask yourself.

“Would I ask this of someone who was in my parish if I was chatting with them in after Mass?”

then ask yourself

“How would I feel if someone from my church asked me this question if we were chatting after Mass”

If you would not ask such a question because it would be deemed impolite or none of your business or none of their business, then it’s probably not a good thing to post here.

I think things are valid as a topic of conversation, The wonderful things about public fora is that if there’s a topic you don’t want to particpate in, then you don’t have to! I thought the collection plate question was crossing the line, so I chose not to read it!

I’ve always found that it’s much more effective to change my own behaviour then to demand that others change theirs.

I think part of the reason that there are so many “nosey” questions on the Forums has to do with the fact that they are, basically, anonymous. Whether or not people recognize you from other posts, most of us have never met and will never meet the rest of the posters here. Not only does that mean people feel more free to ask personal questions, it means many people will feel more at ease answering them. I think the Forums offer the opportunity for us to get a better feel of the general opinions of many Catholics without the uncomfortable necessity of asking them to their face, where many would decline to answer.

Personal questions are always inappropriate, and the “if you don’t like it, don’t read it” line of reasoning seems especially out of place in a Catholic forum.

But regardless of personal opinions, I invite all to look at the sticky thread “Banned topics” where you’ll see that personal questions are against the rules here.
