if it all isn’t in the Bible doesn’t that mean the Bible isn’t perfect?
This doesnt mean the Bible is not perfect, it means the Bible must be read in the light of Sacred Tradition which is the oral teachings the apostles have handed down to the Church by Christ Himself. Would you like verses that show Christ using oral teachings not found in the Old Testament when speaking and teaching His apostles to show you that even God used Sacred Tradition?
why wouldn’t God just put it all in the Bible in the first place??
why would He make it extra complicated and hard for us to do good.
seems kinda mean to me.
Becuase He put it all in His Church, which removed the need to put it all in the Bible. He did this so Christains would understand and have an authority on matters of faith and morals. Plus look at what happens when Christains think the Bible is all thats needed for their instruction. They go around intepreting infallible scriptures with no infallible teaching authority and one protestant church turns into thousands of protestant churches all believing different things. The Bible alone doctrine has done nothing but divide Christians.

Notice where Christ says to His apostles (the Church) Go forth and TEACH all nations and where He doesnt say “Go forth and give a Book to all nations and let them read it and draw their own conculsions.”

Do you know that history of the Bible? Do you know how long it took for it to be compliled and presented in the way your used to having?

but what Jesus used to teach in the NT is now in the NT. also, he is Jesus, a tad mroe credible than your average joe.

and wouldn’t saving some for the church to decide put MORE decisions on infallable men??

and where in the Bible does it say we need more rules? who decided we needed more?

The average Joe that told me the Bible doesnt contain everything was John the Apostle and He told me this while under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. So in short Gods infallible Word told me this.

But there are also many other things which Jesus did; which, if they were written every one, the world itself, I think, would not be able to contain the books that should be written.–John 21:25

See you believe the Bible contains everything and by believing this you’re stating that the other things Jesus did that were not written in the Bible are unimportant. Hum not a stance I would recommend taking.

what bible verse says it is wrong?
It’s been awhile, meaning decades, but the reason that onanism is a word for masturbation comes from Genesis and the man Onan, see GE 39 1 - 11, the belief is based on verse 9, “And Onan knew that the descendant would not be his; and it came to pass, when he went in unto his brother’s wife, that he spilled it on the ground, lest that he should give a descendant to his brother.”

Onan’s married brother died before having a son thus by law it was his duty to know his brother’s wife so that she might have a son to carry on the dead brother’s lineage, the boy (or girls) would not have been Onan’s.

It might be interesting to combine this thread with one on fornication. In the 1980’s a woman, the girlfriend of a friend, asked me where it says in the bible that sex outside of marriage is a sin? That question eventually led me into learning the Greek language which, for those who don’t know, is what the New Testament is written in.

Masturbation’s not wrong
this I know
because the Bible doesn’t tell me so

Masturbation is wrong
this I know
because the Church tells me so

This thread will die soon
this I know
because is! isn’t! has nowhere to go

you are assuming i am a boy… haha. i’m a girl 🙂 i probably should have mentioned that. so no wet dreams for me.
Oh, my apologies. Most of the masturbation questions have come from guys so I think my mind got ahead of me on this one 😉

I will show you where the Bible says masturbation is wrong when you provide me with the verse that says it’s ok.
This is faulty logic at its best. It’s a fallacy.

If anyone is to give someone a proof of what the Bible’s stance is, the onus would be on the one that asserts it’s immoral according to the Bible. i.e. you. Since the Bible is silent on the matter, you can’t ask someone to provide you with a verse contradicting your position since there’s no mention of it in a moral sense.

2000 years later, and people still blatantly commit this logical error, it’s ridiculous.

To the OP:

The Bible is not a complete encyclopaedic reference for do’s and don’ts. However there are some general stories, guidelines that one can extrapolate to determine the morality of certain issues. The Bible does state that all scripture is fit for reproof and doctrine, and that’s what the general Christian consensus has come to accept over time, I will not go in to the details, but there have been various books and authors dealing with this topic, look it up, and you’re sure to find it because I certainly am not going to give a detailed post regarding it now.

Furthermore, emotions related to actions have no bearing on determining the morality of the action, just because you don’t feel guilt for an action doesn’t mean the action is O.K. Many murders don’t feel any remorse, does that mean murder is O.K? Objective analysis is required if you really wish to determine the answer you’re looking for.

I personally don’t believe masturbation is a grave and damning sin as many prophets of doom on this website proclaim it to be, I however don’t think it’s O.K either, but that’s just my opinion. Speaking to many priests, most of them don’t appear to hold the same opinion as some of our pseudo-Cardinals roaming these boards here.

Out of purely speculative curiosity; could a veteran who became “catastrophically disabled” from a spinal cord injury and is now incapable of sex and for what ever reasons, no longer has any interest in sex either – still be guilty of sexual sin? Oh and just assume he can’t walk either.

Of course this is purely speculative you understand.

Depends on what he’s done to invoke a question of sexual sin wouldn’t it?

Theoretically yes, you may not have any interest in sex, but still committ a lewd perverted act and land yourself in jail for a sexual crime. The issue of interest really has no bearing.

why not just believe what the infallible Bible says opposed to fallible men?
So Matthew, Mark, Luke, John and the writers of the Bible were infallible? Do you deny that the Holy Spirit guided these men? If you accept that, where do you have proof the Spirit guided these men? Do you believe that God can guide men in other ways?
also, what happened before the magisterium? were people just sent to hell because God forgot to tell the magisterium to tell the people what is worthy of a ticket to hell??
Sigh. Invincible ignorance, and scripture my friend. Do you not read Jesus’ words in the Gospel? “If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not be guilty of sin. Now, however, they have no excuse for their sin” - John 15:22
why is the Bible not enough?
Enough for…? So the Bible is the be all end all, huh? Wow. You’ve just made Jesus Christ a failure 😦 since, well, the Bible was only composed after his death, and only settled as Canon (by so called fallible men!) almost 400 years after his death. Jesus left no writings or “Bible”. He left a Church.

This is faulty logic at its best. It’s a fallacy.

Um, no. There is no fallacy, as the poster was merely trying to make a point about the fact that the Bible, as you admit, as not an encyclopaedic reference. The poster never said the Bible said masturbation was wrong, either, so the onus isn’t on the poster.
I personally don’t believe masturbation is a grave and damning sin
Your personal opinion isn’t relevant. What the Church teachings - what God commands - is relevant.
Speaking to many priests, most of them don’t appear to hold the same opinion as some of our pseudo-Cardinals roaming these boards here.
And now it’s your turn to commit a fallacy. “Speaking to many Priests” huh? Yeah, right. Firstly, this is simply the old “scientists say…” rubbish re-hashed in a Christian context. I would bet my savings you’ve actually not spoken to any Priests about this. “Hey Father, so, masturbation, gimme your opinion!”. Yeah right. Even if you have spoken to a Priest, I doubt you’ve spoken to many as you claim. But even if we accept your claim, so what? Some Priests say some very unusual things, some even say heretical things.

The beauty of the Church, and morality, is that opinions are of no consequence. You seem to think that following Church teaching makes one a “psuedo-Cardinal”. How ridiculous, and an ad hominem fallacy.

Hey guys, insisting that 1+1=2 makes me a “psuedo-Mathematics PhD Professor” - but don’t worry, because it’s only my opinion!

Anyway,

I think this thread is a troll thread looking at the responses by the OP. I might be wrong, though.

Um, no. There is no fallacy, as the poster was merely trying to make a point about the fact that the Bible, as you admit, as not an encyclopaedic reference. The poster never said the Bible said masturbation was wrong, either, so the onus isn’t on the poster.
Not a fallacy? “Merely attempting” to make a point doesn’t have any bearing on whether someone commits a fallacy or not, fallacies are errors in logic and it can occur whether they are merely stating this, or merely stating that.

Not to mention it is also a complete contradiction because either the Bible is against it or not, so obviously both cannot be validated at the same time rendering the Bible true simultaneously.
Your personal opinion isn’t relevant. What the Church teachings - what God commands - is relevant.
Your opinion of my opinion isn’t relevant either. Like I said, it was my opinion, and since this is a forum I can post it as such as much as you can, this nit-picking is what is frankly irrelevant and probably shows that you’re attempting to instigate a reprisal because there’s nothing else you can apparently seem to attack.

Relevancy about Church teachings is in the eye of the beholder, it’s not an absolute, so frankly your statement is an opinion, therefore your personal opinion in regards to that isn’t relevant. We can do this back-and-forth if you wish, I have no problem in playing these games.
And now it’s your turn to commit a fallacy. “Speaking to many Priests” huh? Yeah, right. Firstly, this is simply the old “scientists say…” rubbish re-hashed in a Christian context. I suppose you are trying to pigeon-hole me and claim that I’m appealing to authority here when I’ve done no such thing. I never said “Because so many priests said this, this must be true” - it is also your turn to commit a fallacy here by constructing a strawman, since you can’t possibly know whether or not I’ve spoken to priests, or many for that matter, you constructing a false scenario based on your assumption is a strawman, and a fallacy. Well done! Talk about hypocrisy, and irony.

My actual point here was instead of having to listen to every pious Tom, Dick and Harry here on the forums, and listening to people claiming souls are going to hell for masturbating, it would set the record straight if people went and talked to priest(s) in real life, so that we don’t have to wade through this garble of **** reminiscing doomsday prophecies. Yes, priests have their own opinions too, and no one has to take what I said as true, they might have had different experiences, but that is by far the responses I’ve gotten when I’ve asked them, and in fact I’ve seen other forum members here posting that their priests have said this and that.
The beauty of the Church, and morality, is that opinions are of no consequence. You seem to think that following Church teaching makes one a “psuedo-Cardinal”. How ridiculous, and an ad hominem fallacy.
Another strawman, I never said anything of the sort. I said people here who take on the role of philosopher for everyone is akin to pseudo-Cardinals. Oh, it’s an “Ad-hominem” is it? Let me give you a crash course in a philosophy lesson. An ad-hominem would be a direct instigation in an argument towards an accused. Such as “you’re a moron, therefore you are wrong” - what I did, was rhetoric towards a large group of people in general, not specifically targeting anyone.

I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but your own statement regarding the “beauty of the church…rant, rant, rant” is a fallacy; appeal to authority, of course, whilst scrutinizing my post and trying to make fallacies that didn’t exist, appear, perhaps you should’ve be more careful of what you post. There’s no problem in following the Church, there is a problem when you hold an authority at one level and claim opinions are no consequence, it’s these kind of fallacious thoughts that eventually have led to the separation of Church and state, because you can’t be trusted, O.K? 🙂 👍

Before you try and claim it’s not a fallacy, take note, your statement is the same as saying Church teachings are absolute, the Church made a teaching, therefore it’s correct. Which is a fallacy, the only way to render it as true is to prove Church teachings are absolute, considering this is not in the realm of empirical proof, this remains as it always has been in the realm of subjectivity.

Using your train of thought your entire post would be an ad-hominem, and it’s probably been closer to that than me claiming people are pseudo-Cardinals were.
Hey guys, insisting that 1+1=2 makes me a “psuedo-Mathematics PhD Professor” - but don’t worry, because it’s only my opinion!
What is this? Is this an attempt to make a joke? Could this be an “ad-hominem fallacy”? Could it also be ignoratio-elenchi a.k.a a red herring, perhaps it’s poisoning the well? I’ll let you work that one out.
I think this thread is a troll thread looking at the responses by the OP. I might be wrong, though.
Who cares, your personal opinion doesn’t matter, for all you know, you might be accusing the OP without any merit.

Lastly, if my opinion doesn’t matter, and if this is a troll-thread, then just stay clear, why bother matching your vast intellect with trolls and pseudo-mathematicians?

Yes, now accuse me of an ad-hominem.

Fail somewhere else.

Edit: I stalked…err looked up your recent posts, and I see you have a habit of frequenting the “sin” threads, so obviously the pseudo-Cardinal comment hit hard because you realized you were a part of that happy, noble posse comitatus of online lurkers.

Happy sinning 🙂

Not a fallacy? “Merely attempting” to make a point doesn’t have any bearing on whether someone commits a fallacy or not, fallacies are errors in logic and it can occur whether they are merely stating this, or merely stating that.
Sigh. Poster wasn’t constructing an argument. Poster was making a simple point that perhaps was meant to be a bit confusing in order to get the point across.
Not to mention it is also a complete contradiction because either the Bible is against it or not, so obviously both cannot be validated at the same time rendering the Bible true simultaneously.
You’re trying too hard, precisely because you’ve missed the point.
Since this is a Catholic forum, and the Moral Theology Subforum, yes, your opinion is irrelevant and so is mine. Give Church teaching, which is the truth. Don’t mislead people. If you want to give your opinion, create a thread about it.
Relevancy about Church teachings is in the eye of the beholder, it’s not an absolute, so frankly your statement is an opinion, therefore your personal opinion in regards to that isn’t relevant.
The Catechism is open for debate? News to me. It is an absolute. Masturbation is gravely disordered and immoral. No opinion necessary about that.
I suppose you are trying to pigeon-hole me and claim that I’m appealing to authority here when I’ve done no such thing. I didn’t say you said that, so your own attempt at trying to explain my strawman is itself a strawman.

I have no doubt Priests have opinions. Where did I say otherwise? That doesn’t mean one should go to them. You’re telling us that we should go to a priest in order to get his opinion, as if this is what matters - the interpretation of the priest. Nonsense. We go to what the Church says, and if the priest disagrees we should correct him. Perhaps the reason you love the responses you’ve gotten is because they agree with your position? Hmm.
Another strawman, I never said anything of the sort. I said people here who take on the role of philosopher for everyone is akin to pseudo-Cardinals. Oh, it’s an “Ad-hominem” fallacy is it? Aha, I see. So you’re an internet philosopher, huh? Thanks for the lesson but my degree in Philosophy was good enough, thank you 🙂 You can rebutt all you like, but you called people who direct you towards Church teaching “pseudo-Cardinals” as an attack on their person, as if they believe themselves to be more important than they are, as well as calling everybody who disagrees with you a gloom and doom naysayer. Ad hominem as it bears no weight in whether or not masturbating is sinful.

Rest of your post was self-righteous ranting and patronizing clap-trap.

Look, either way, the OP needs to know that masturbating is gravely disordered and sinful. If OP continues, she will go to Hell. I know, I know, you’ve made it clear you think this is doom and gloom psuedo-Cardinal hell scaring. Cool story bro. It is what it is. You can argue all you like and dress up your posts, but the truth is what it is.

Have a good one, I won’t be responding again.

Sigh. Poster wasn’t constructing an argument. Poster was making a simple point that perhaps was meant to be a bit confusing in order to get the point across.
Strange, usually to get a point across you try to make something as simple as possible so that others get your point. This would be the first time I’ve heard of anyone posting something a “bit confusing” in hopes to get his point across. I’m well aware of what his intentions were, it wasn’t the least confusing.
Since this is a Catholic forum, and the Moral Theology Subforum, yes, your opinion is irrelevant and so is mine. Give Church teaching, which is the truth. Don’t mislead people. If you want to give your opinion, create a thread about it.
It’s both hypocritical and funny to reprimand someone for giving their opinion, and then also admit that your own opinion which you’ve given is not worth 2 cents. Should I laugh or lambaste you? I am not misleading anyone, I even clearly said it was my opinion. If I were misleading people, I would have said Church teaching condones it.

I will give my opinion wherever I please, and as such am not constrained by your personal forum rules, at least if you’re going to make your own rules, see that you stick to it.
The Catechism is open for debate? News to me. It is an absolute. Masturbation is gravely disordered and immoral. No opinion necessary about that.
It may be absolute within the Catholic community as much as the Hindu sacred texts are absolute to the Hindus, so whose version of absolute does one subscribe to? Precisely, please prove to me why the cathechism is absolute and not one of thousands of other philosophies and religions.
I didn’t say you said that, so your own attempt at trying to explain my strawman is itself a strawman.
Oh you didn’t? Which fallacy were you alluding to here then? In either case, whether I’ve committed a strawman there or not (still waiting to confirm this based on your response) doesn’t exclude the fact that you’ve already committed one and that’s set in stone.
Your point? Oh, in that case…
“Merely attempting” to make a point doesn’t have any bearing on whether someone commits a fallacy or not, fallacies are errors in logic and it can occur whether they are merely stating this, or merely stating that.
What? What does my earlier quote have anything to do with what I said in the latter paragraph? Are you intentionally being dense in the hopes of derailing this?
I have no doubt Priests have opinions. Where did I say otherwise? That doesn’t mean one should go to them. You’re telling us that we should go to a priest in order to get his opinion, as if this is what matters - the interpretation of the priest. Nonsense. We go to what the Church says, and if the priest disagrees we should correct him. Perhaps the reason you love the responses you’ve gotten is because they agree with your position? Hmm.
Yes. You’re absolutely right, your great Church has ordained priests precisely so that people can listen to the adolescent who has elevated himself on the pedestal with the avatar of the keys of St. Peter on forums. That’s it, go on, accuse me of an “ad-hominem fallacy”, and also accuse me of poisoning the well whilst you’re at it. That’s part of the reason priests are there are they not, people go to them for advice regarding spiritual troubles, they don’t go to you. Who are you anyways?
I’d be careful about ranting about your great achievements of a degree in philosophy, as a lot of people come out of college with a degree in philosophy as part of something else they’ve studied. I find it hard to believe you would even pass a general education subject on the introduction of philosophy, let alone hold a philosophical degree. Yes, I don’t believe you, and your inability to identify obvious fallacies correctly in your own statements probably is justification enough, heck you haven’t even attempted to defend them, probably because it’s blatantly obvious.

Again, that is not an ad-hominem, that was not part of an “argument”, so how could that be an ad-hominem? At best it was just a throw away comment in disdain at some people.
This is the part where I have trouble believing you hold a degree in philosophy, so please excuse me, if I call you a liar 🙂 For something to be an ad-hominem, it must be part of a relevant argument. According to your logic, if I called someone an idiot for blocking me on the freeway, I would be committing an ad-hominem because I was “attacking their person” - dang right I would be attacking their person, but that’s not an ad-hominem, an ad-hominem is a logical error in an argument due to an irrelevant personal attack. - philosophy fail. I will continue to educate you if you don’t understand the distinction.

Rest of your post was self-righteous ranting and patronizing clap-trap.
Says the person who has taken it upon himself to post in threads regarding “sin” and give people spiritual direction whilst asserting the opinions of priests are irrelevant. Go print out this dribble and take it to your next confession, so you can get a better look at the rubbish that’s in your mind during a self-examination, and yes I have no doubt you’ll be regretting your own attitude in a week’s time.

Awaiting howls of “fallacy, fallacy…”
Look, either way, the OP needs to know that masturbating is gravely disordered and sinful. If OP continues, she will go to Hell. I know, I know, you’ve made it clear you think this is doom and gloom psuedo-Cardinal hell scaring. Cool story bro. It is what it is. Yes Holy Father, whatever you say.
Have a good one, I won’t be responding again.
I doubt it, you’ll spend the better part of a day in abject hysteria as you try to locate everyone’s fallacies and try to justify your own.

I will show you where the Bible says masturbation is wrong when you provide me with the verse that says it’s ok.
Well, there’s a BS answer. By default, you can’t say it is wrong.

Yes, it is, but if you cannot show where, then the OP’s questions is valid.

hmm, i didn’t know the jews back in the day followed a magesterium??? you mean it has been around since the CATHOLIC church…which isn’t the beginning.

why didn’t God mention that there would be “more rules to follow!” ?

how do we know we need more rules?

and again, why isn’t the Bible enough? you didn’t answer that.

if it isn’t enough why did God do that to us? how do we know what “addons” are the right ones?
Hey, there, lovingyou -

I find the thread fascinating not only because of the legit questions, but also as usual, the attacks from those responding.

Not sure if you are really looking for answers or stirring the pot for fun, but the bottom line answer as to why masturbation is wrong is that Catholics believe that God gave us the gift of sex; He said go forth and multiply; that sex is for couples and having babies (THAT will start a whole new thread); and that as such, masturbation is simply pleasure seeking so is wrong because it abuses the purpose of sex.

Physical stress release, etc? Yes, it can be; probably why guys fall alseep after sex! But physiologically, it is a stress reliever. Does it make it right? No.

As a Catholic, I will tell you that while I don’t believe masturbation is right and everyone struggles with sin to some degree, there is much in the Catechism that is worded such as to scare the hell out of people (no pun intended, but maybe appropriate) - gravely disordered, intrinsically evil. You won’t find in the bible where it says couples have to use NFP for having babies, but the church says so; and any other sex act other than intercourse to where the man climaxes, it is also wrong (I don’t agree and you won’t find that in the bible either, but it goes with church teachings on sex, like masturbation).

Bible written by fallible men? Yep. But the church teaches and believes that the fallible men were guided by the infallible Holy Spirit.

In the end, if you believe in God, then search your heart, see what you find; if you are Catholic, go to confession, get some gudiance, but do not beat yourself up either. In spite of what you are told here, which is spewing back only what the CCC says, a priest will tell you that while a sin, there are situations which mitigate the degree of sin or culpability for masturbation - habit, past life experiences, etc. Doesn’t mean it is OK, just that you need to focus on finding other stress relievers.

you are assuming i am a boy… haha. i’m a girl 🙂 i probably should have mentioned that. so no wet dreams for me.
Now THERE is a whole other discussion!

Girl’s aren’t “wasting the seed” as the argument goes, so … ?
