I helped the March of Dimes

My daughter was born 7 weeks premature. She weighed only 3lbs.
We had a traumtic pregnancy, birth and post-birth. She was in the NICU for several weeks.
She is a healthy baby now and will be 2 in August.
Since her birth, I have become involved with the March of Dimes. I campaigned for Walk America last year and this year (last weekend as a matter of fact). I have raised a few thousand dollars with each campaign.
Now, I learn that they support abortion/planned parenthood/etc.???
I had no idea. But, I still don’t have all the facts. If someone could please fill me in that would be great.
Also, I’m so confused because if I find out infact they are doing things against the churches teachings, how do I resolve that with the fact that my daughter is probably alive now because of the research they do? I keep telling everyone they are supporting a great cause when they donate to our team. Now I have to write thank you cards to our team walk members and what do I say? Thanks for helping me support an agency that helps fund evil?

I’ve never felt like I had a calling or that I had any real talent in any area. With the traumatic experience of having my child I tried to turn it into a positive and began doing this volunteer work with MOD and finally thought I had found my calling. Now this.

I went to teh MOD web site and did a search on “abortion.” Here is one of the statements I found under their research topic:

Restriction on Use
MOD policy states that abortion is not the solution to the problem of birth defects. The MOD has long maintained its neutrality on the issue of abortion. All grantees and contractors regardless of their personal opinions are prohibited from using MOD funds for abortion research, to pay for abortions, or to give directive advice concerning abortions. Fetal tissue research does not violate this policy if applicable federal regulations are adhered to. A non-directive referral for counseling, if requested by a patient in the course of prenatal care, does not violate this policy. Violation of this policy constitutes grounds for immediate cancellation of a grant or termination of a cooperative agreement.

It sounds to me that they are trying to walk a fine line and still achieve their goals. Very tricky. At least they don’t openly support elective abortions. Many people do support tissue use, unfortunately, that’s very mainstream thinking. Probably, your support of the March of Dimes was mostly a positive. They HAVE done alot of great work over the years.
