I John 4: 21 And this commandment we have from him, that he who loves God should love his brother also.

Another translation
I John 4: 21 So this is the commandment He has given us, that anyone who loves God must also love his brother.

First question: What Greek word is translated here (must/should)?

Second question: This reminds me of the Eucharistic Prayer II: “Make us grow in love.” Now for the questions: In what sense should we understand make in I John 4: 21?

ἀγαπᾷ -agapa
It is actually not a Greek word for “should” or “must” but it is due to the case that takes the Greek word for “love” agapao and makes it translate into “should love”. It is a verb: third person present active subjunctive singular

In what sense should we understand make in I John 4: 21?

St. Augustine says; “If he is your brother, and you do not love him, how do you love God, whose commandment you despise?”

What sense is should or must?

Is it either of these two: when you arrive at church you WILL see the cross (one cannot miss it). Or, when you are at our church you SHOULD stop and see our beautiful cross.

Or is it: a healthy seed must grow when it is planted in perfect soil, perfect climate and perfectly watered. All other conditions are perfect, too.

Or is it some other sense?
