So I was in the thread regarding what teachings we have trouble understanding.

And I was about to post that I agreed with the poster who had trouble with a literal devil. And as i was thinking out my post, I was trying to word how i have trouble with a person Devil, not just a concept of evil.

Then I thought about how the Devil isn’t technically a person, but rather a fallen angel.

At that point I became aware that if I didnt belive in a literal Devil, I couldnt believe in literal Angels.

Thus meaning I would have to deny such teachings as the Annunciation, among so many others.

Therefore it must that there is a literal Devil.

Ahhhh, thanks be to God for realizations such as these

Isn’t it neat how we jog through those mental circles and some things just click? It’s a cool feeling.

You are totally correct, the devil is real. The devil is a fallen angel. There are many fallen angels, all working for one purpose, to have us loose our immortal souls. His biggest ploy is to try to get us to believe that he does not exist. This makes it easy for him from there on. He is after all the father of LIES.

FYI, Angels ARE persons, as are the Three Persons of the Trinity.

One does not need to be a human to be a person, but rather be a entity with the Capacity for Reason.

Humans, Angels and the Trinity all qualify. 🙂

Have I met you before SenorSalsa?😉

Anyway, I believe in a literal one.

Two boys are walking home from catechism class. One asks “Do you believe that stuff about the Devil?”

“Nah,” says the other, “it’s like Santa Claus-- it’s really your father.”

Like Brendan says SenorSalsa - anyone with a will and an intellect. Sometimes the word host or hosts represents these beings or is defined this way as in “The Lord of hosts” or “the heavenly hosts”.

I love it when we just figure out stuff like that (must be the Holy Spirit helping us along - don’t you think?).

I heard this from Father John Corapi: "You know when we hear people say, ‘There’s no such thing as the devil’ or 'the devil doesn’t exist, it hurts…because if there’s no such thing as the devil, then there’s no such thing as sin; and if there’s no such thing as sin, then why did Jesus come?..What did he come to save us and redeem us from?"

Years ago when I was in the army, I had a roommate who was convinced that the devil was female. I won’t get into specifics about that, but what she said sort of made some sense. Think of the feminist movement. In that group, women don’t want to be equal with men, they want to be over men. And satan wanted to be over God.

Christy Beth, thats a very interesting notion, but is that all the evidence you got to indicate that the devil is a woman, a bunch of feminists? In the book of Revelations the greatest enemy of Satan was a woman! see how at the site

Could it be that the devil is trying to destroy the reputation of women through temptation that they need to be superior to men or that they are being oppressed by men, just as he did with eve? This is a call for women to be stronger in their faith, and to know the word of God better, to be able to resist satan.

Satan is neither a man nor a woman, but a fallen angel. However, he is able to disguise himself, as St. Paul tells us in 2 Crointhians 11:13 : satan even, “…disguises himself as an angel of light.” Whatever it takes to dupe us or lead us on in our pride, selfishness, etc.

Maybe Christy Beth was intimating or leaning towards how the hand of satan can be seen working in/with different “human” enterprises ?

Point taken NeedImprovement but how can one be sure that what we see is the work of satan for example, years ago i had an experience with the Rosary, you can view it in my blog at faithfreaks

many people said that what i saw and heard was the work of the devil in the form of the dark figure and of Mary. Now i choose to belive otherwise, i trust that the voice i heard was indeed Mary’s and not satan in that form. but many of those who i shared this experience insist that it was all satans doing.

Whenever confronted with an experience such as this, it is easy to discern its origin. Simply tell the apparition to say “Praise be Jesus Christ” If it does, it is not of Satan.

…Really nice post @ faithfreaks.com allana. Took a few tries to be able to view it…even tried signing up for facebook in order to find it.

In St. Louis de Montfort’s book “The Secret of the Rosary”, demons ( speaking through a posessed man if I recall correctly) are depicted in the same way during an encounter with St. Dominic…they are laughing and mocking the Rosary, calling it ,“an old woman’s prayer”. Subsequently St. Dominic places the Rosary over the head (around the neck) of the posessed person saying (I’m paraphrasing), “Very well … since you have seen fit to mock this devotion, now you shall sing its praises” ; at which point our Blessed Mother appeared and forced the demons to tell the truth about the power of the Rosary and how it preserves and protects those who say it (St. Padre Pio used to call the Rosary his “weapon”).

As Deacon Ed B said, the devil’s biggest ploy is to try and have us believe he doesn’t exist. I think it was St. Theresa of Avila who said about this: “What better camouflage could an enemy ask for than the very denial of his existence?”

Another thing that was mentioned in St. Louis de Montfort’s book is that each Hail Mary we say is a beautiful rose we give our Blessed Mother - a rose that lasts for all eternity.

So this is only my limited opinion, but I don’t see how such a loving Mother who you are treating so sweetly could just stand by idly while the devil attempts to scare or discourage one of her daughters from praying the Rosary. Surely She would at least let you know She was there beside you through all of that…looks like that’s exactly what She did.

As long as we continue to pray the Rosary, we needn’t worry about anything else. What friends tell us is worth consideration, but , in the end, the revelation, consolation, test of faith (call it whatever you wish) was meant for you - not them…at least not directly for them. 👍

Good job SenorSalsa! 👍 It is amazing when we sometimes have to think about things and then things just make sense. 🙂
