  1. “Just pray and God will show you the way!” (Nevermind that thousands of atheists, me included, have done just that - and haven’t heard so much as a peep.)
Yeah, that’s just not going to cut it for someone who isn’t predisposed to believe. You gotta make your case stronger. But you guys *know *that the case is pretty weak, that’s why you talk-up the whole “faith” thing.
Did you spend a lot of time in prayer? Were you sincerely looking for guidance from God? Or spend a lot of time meditating on and studying religious writings from different religions?

It took me many years of praying to get answers. God doesn’t seem to give them out easily for some reason.

But then, I realize no one is going to spend years praying unless they really want to believe or have a strong feeling that there must be answers somewhere. 🤷

so do you believe in love? If so, how do you verify its existence with your senses?
i see what you mean. but you know scientists believe in dark matter even though they cant prove it 100%. it just fits perfectly into where they think it needs to be. which is why i dont understand why some are so against god. its like they can say whatever they want and its scientific, and unstable. but when we say we believe in god, were stupid.

EVERY KNEE shall bend before the Lord before its over,
truly a fool says there is no God

you got that right…they talk with such certainty. They never even say “this is only a theory its still under investigation and research” then something new comes out and they suddenly start rambling on about that. did you know that a priest supposed that the universe had a beginning? Before that, most scientists believed in an eternal universe. Ironic if you ask me.

His name was Fr. Georges Lemaitre. Follow this link to an article including a picture of Fr. Lemaitre with Albert Einstein:

(hope I did the link correctly – will know in a minute…)
thanks for the link and everything but ive read about him. dont you think its sort of ironic the way his theory has developed into a means of slamming weak minded christians who dare not challenge someone of such “great knowledge” i.e. modern scientists? bah… i know what is written. i know what shall be done. this is all i need.

Neil, you have a very good point about atheists being stuck in a catch-22 regarding prayer to a personal God.

I would suggest to an atheist that they start simply by praying for their own awakening to the highest truth of their own being. This prayer should not be to a “God” that they don’t believe in. For that matter, it should also not be to a saint or teacher or guru or holy book, etc. that they wouldn’t be inclined to have faith in either - if they’re really consistent in their atheism.

This prayer requires only sincere intentionality. And, similar to someone praying to become an Olympic athlete or world class musician or great artist, they must be willing to take personal responsibility for training/practicing/studying in the field of their prayerful inspiration.

None of this requires faith or belief in anything or anyone outside oneself.

Thank You Jean, I am trying to hold on tight to jesus, even tho I slip up sometimes, But God knows man is weak
method,
Jesus holds your hand, He doesn’t let go.
Rev.3:20 reads, “Here I am , I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with him, and he with me.”
Have you invited God into your heart?
Have you been baptized? What is your christian background?

God bless you,
jean8

Jean, I have never been anything but catholic, I am baptised & confirmed in the faith,Yes I have invited God into my heart, But I realize God doesn`t change things, he justs gives us strength to bear . We all have a cross to bear. I am one of those people who pray little prayers all thru the day, for everyone, I have special spot in my heart for the dead, I am always saying prayers for the dead, as i would like to think that no one is going to hell.Thank You for caring

Curtis,
Whether you know it or feel it (or not) you do have a measure of faith. Its in there somewhere. It seems to me you are reaching to grasp that measure of faith by writing in the forum. In time and through Gods grace it will be revealed to you and then it will grow. Your spirit may be sleeping now but it will be awakened.

Jesus loves you and so do I. I will pray for you to find that measure of faith and act upon it. God bless you my friend.

What you stated is difficult for many to accept – but it is a sign of a mature faith.

God bless.

Well the fact that energy is never created or destroyed seemed to indicate that the universe was eternal. And doesn’t the big bang theory only indicate that the universe began from a super hot super dense seed. We still have no idea of its true origins, but isn’t it awesome working it all out and trying to solve the answer to this ridiculously complex question…Maybe it actually is eternal, maybe this universe exists inside a black hole (Smollen’s theory), maybe your god did in fact do it, who knows, but lets find out…

I went to a youth camp a few years ago, where I thought i was born again, again… And as my faith wavered again I prayed most sincerely. You have no idea how much I wanted to believe. But as I learnt more about my religion, I doubted more and I prayed even greater. I started going to church nearly every day. And praying in church. But no…

And that was it, I didn’t fight it anymore, I had fought for 2 years with it and I admitted to my self and my family now, I am irreligious.

I am sure there are other people in my situation. You should remember that some of us actually really did believe in some god or another.

But, you lost your faith. You didn’t imitate Christ as he desired of you.

Ask yourself why. Probably was unconfessed sins. Its not too late to correct your defects.

I know this poem was out in the 80’s because I used to have it on a card to carry as well as one that was called ‘A Cross in my Pocket’. I see there’s variations of it, which ever was the first one from the 80’s I don’t know but maybe this is one of those times you think you’re alone and it’s actually God carrying you?

Footprints in the sand

This link has 3 versions but I remember being at a low point in my life and a friend of mine giving me a version (which one?) of this poem. I pray it brings comfort.

I’ve had craziness in job searching fun and miss having a job that I used to assume would be there. Now stable jobs seem to be a wild beast one has to buy all the right equipment for to try and trap. It’s funny how the deceiver wants to use things like job hunt woes, disagreements with people, feeling like everything is tumbling down around you but in spite of what it ‘feels’ like, take courage, Jesus has overcome the world.

I need to keep saying this to myself and perhaps it would be good for you too… I CAN do all things in Christ who strengthens me. I’ve not been given a spirit of fear but one of power and love and a sound mind, just look at what God says about you and keep breathing that into your life in spite of what you might be experiencing IN the world. In this world you may have trouble but Jesus overcame the world.
