I just stole something and I don't know what to do about it

Well, here it is. I’m scared and ashamed to death here…

I was at Wal-Mart picking up sme things I needed for my quilting project. I picked up a spool of thread, and then got the fabric bolt I needed. There was no help available so I just started looking around and comparing fabrics. Having only two hands, I put the spool of fabric in my coat pocket and started lifting bolts of thread and looking around. Help eventually came, I got my fabric, bought it, and left,having totally forgotten about the thread!!! When I got home and took off my jacket I found the spool of thread I didn’t pay for!!! I just burst out in tears, I NEVER do stuff like this!

But now I don’t know what to do. Do I go back and explain that I took it accidentally without paying and I want to pay, or just sneak in, get in line and pull the thread out of my pocket so no one notices. THe last thing I need right now is to get busted for shoplifting by walking in and confessing everything!!. :’(
 
Since this was accidental and not intentional, I would simply go to the store and either slip it back onto the shelf or pick up a few things I normally need (like a loaf of bread or a tube of toothpaste) and pay for those items along with the thread.
 
You didn’t steal anything.

Just take the thread back to Walmart and go to customer service. Yes, explain the thread didn’t get paid for and have them ring it up.

I’ve gone out of the store before with an item on the bottom of my cart or in my cart that didn’t get taken out and scanned and simply went back in and paid. It’s not a big deal at all.
 
Walmart will NOT call the cops if you are returning something you accidentally took without paying. Especially since the item probably cost about a dollar. Take it back, explain it to them, and say you are sorry. They will likely think you are a good person and say thank you and that not many people would do that.
 
Okay, thanks guys. Since wal mart is open until 10, I’ll go back as soon as dinner is over.

This seriously freaked me out.
 
Oh, you poor soul. Be comforted that you were not stealing. You did not do it on purpose. This is quite messy alright. You might get into trouble with the management if you openly return the goods knowing how sensitive this kind of things is.

Most probably you’d do what Kay Cee suggested. But really I wouldn’t know how to advise you so that you will not get into trouble unnecessarily. I am interested to know myself just in case if I find myself in the same situation.

Maybe when you pray, ask God for wisdom.

It happened to me one and I simply went back, explained, and paid for it.

It isn’t a sin of stealing as you accidentally went out with it. It would only be one if you don’t pay for it when you can, now that you’ve become aware of your mistake.

It might look a bit furtive, perhaps, if you just try to slip it back. You would probably look too guilty anyway.

You shouldn’t get into strife. It’s to your credit to go and pay for it.

If you feel too worried about going straight to the counter, choose another small item you need in the store and pay for them both together.

Another option could be to phone the store and ask for the manager, and let them know what happened, and ask what they wish you to do. This might be the least embarressing way.

I actually need the spool of thread anyway. I had every intention on buying it, I just forgot it was in my pocket or my posession for that matter. I was looking forward to getting home and getting some dinner.

I’ve been having a rather frazzled kind of day.

I just don’t think they’ll be too angry if I come back in and buy the thread, since returning isn’t what I want. Right?

I’m sorry I’m really paranoid about this. I was terrified the cops were gunna show up at my door for a few minutes there…LOL

So I guess this is the answer to “I’ve had a stressful day and week…God, do you think I should get some Ben and Jerry’s and watch a sappy movie while I quilt when my husband is with his friends tonight?”

Especially since we just went grocery shopping last night and don’t “need” anything…lol

I did this once, I called and asked for the manager and told them I would be stopping in to pay for an item that did not get ringed up on my reciept. When he asked who the checker was, I said I would prefer not to say who. I gave him my name, had the reciept with me, and apparently the manager had told the women at customer service on that shift I would be in. I had the soap with me, paid and got a reciept and left. I was afraid the young girl who rang me up originally would get fired over the bar of soap. That is why I refused to say who rang me up.
 
Thanks a lot guys, I feel better about this. Is it going to matter if I have to wait until tomorrow to go in? My husband’s evening plans got cancelled so I am going to spend it with him. I have tomorrow off, so can I take it then, or does it have to be done today?

I’m sure one day here or there won’t make a difference.

I probably would’ve sent an anonymous note with the money, since you were intending to buy the item anyway. Saves the hassle of going back in, but of course you pay for the stamp. 🤷
 
If you can take it back and pay for it, that’s good. It’s better to let them ring it up since they owe sales tax on it, it needs to be logged into their point of sale system so that it can be replenished, etc.

If for whatever reason you cannot return it, I think you’re safe by making a charitable donation of similar value. That way you’ve come to no profit by it and the poor have been helped.

So, If you come into my store and accidently take a gum eraser while buying watercolor tubes, it’s quite alright for you to donate the money I loose to the charity of your choice?

I did this with a plumbing fitting once at Lowes, once I saw it in my pocket I took it back and explained what happened. The manager gave me a $25 gift card actually.

LOL!

My husband suggested that I just go through the lines, that way I don’t even get a “pat on the back” as it were from managment for doing the right thing to correct a very serious mistake on my part. I liked that. Reward in heaven? LOL

I understand that point, mine was more that I was afraid to go back in with it, and I think its important to remind people that their are honest people out there.
