As someone who has walked away after a horrible RCIA experience and waffled between Christianity and pagan religions, I assure you that your prayers are not wasted. I thank God for you and people like you who stay faithful to god’s call to pray for those wandering lost…I am attempting to come back to Christ and I have no doubt that your prayers helped get me here. thank you. And, please don’t stop. Those prayers are not wasted, I promise you. God Bless you.

This is a bit of a late response, but I wanted to reply because I know the feeling. Looking at our world, its easy to become despondent, seeing all the evil. There are terrible evils in all parts of the world, but sometimes its most heartbreaking to see those close to us stumble and not even be aware of our Lord to help them.
Despite this, there are a few things we have to remember.

First, the word is not our burden to bear. It’s the Lord’s and he did that when he took up the cross. He didn’t give us the weight of the world to carry, and we shouldn’t try and steal his cross, so to speak 😉 We have our own crosses to deal with. Having said that, your sadness about these evils is not wrong. You have a longing for heaven, which is only natural. It also shows that you can distinguish the evil in the world. However, we should not become fixated on it.

When you feel sad about these things, offer them up to the Lord as a sort of consolation to him. He, after all, is the most saddened by these things. Unite your feelings of sadness with his, and in this way you unite yourself with him. Its similar to how when your friend is sad, you would feel sad with him or her.

However, the world is not without hope. We don’t endure these things thinking the end will be miserable. Our hope is a guaranteed hope because our Lord has already won. The world passes.“In the world ye will have tribulation, but be of good cheer: I have overcome the world” John 16:33. Our hope is what, in the end, will draw many people to our Lord. They will see there is something about us, some conviction we have despite all the troubles of the world, which we hold onto. Try and fill your time with positive things and people as well. God wants us to enjoy good things in this life too. Also, don’t get a false image. The devil often wants us to fall into despair by only showing us the horrors. There are good people in this world (and sometimes they are of different religions or not even religious) doing good things. God is present in the world, even if he is often quiet. As Cardinal Newman said, He knows what he’s about.

And pray. God loves it when we pray for others. No one desires that a person return to his love more than he does. God is never outdone in generosity either. I’ve noticed as I pray for others, I am changing myself. God turns us into more loving people so we can draw others to him. I would recommend Eucharistic adoration. We need to experience God’s love for us to be loving ourselves.

I hope this is of some help. God Bless. 🙂

👍 This was very beautiful and very good advice. Even though I am a devout Catholic, I learned some things here to help me as well! Thank you and God Bless You!

I’ve only helped with one RCIA class and I didn’t find anything wrong about it. If you do I would suggest a letter to your bishop about it. He may not know what is happening.

Also, the internet is horrible for people saying the most hateful things. Must be human nature when it is anonymous for the hate to come out. So many cowards hiding behind it now. My advice is to stop reading it. Don’t let the crazies get you down. It’s not necessary. Some people go online just to irritate and you can’t help them, it’s sort of their entertainment. Don’t give them the satisfaction of hurting you.

Concentrate on the good and find people who are upbeat and encouraging.

I suspect there’s a variance from excellent to really crummy in RCIA classes depending on where one goes. But that’s only part of the issue, I’m realizing. The other part is that people are going to bring their own experiences and beliefs into it.

Unfortunately, our society has encouraged people to compartmentalize their lives. Some people get the message to let being or becoming Catholic be the lens through which everything else of importance is subsequently filtered. This would include views on the sanctity of life, marriage, sexuality, economics, Sunday and other worship obligations’ priority, how to treat other people, and much, much more.

When this compartmentalization occurs, we get things like nominal Catholic politicians who support abortion, for example. Or we get converts who don’t think they have to leave their liberalism from their hippie days at the door. However, I’ve come to realize, that instead of wanting to cry, I must have more faith that God is working out his plan in many people and continue to pray for them, and be ready to answer any questions they may have or help them unload if there’s some kind of emotional baggage that’s getting in the way. So instead of despairing, I’m trusting in the Holy Spirit. :yup:

So true. I’m so tired of having yahoo e-mail, because about 60% of their stories on their homepage constantly have to do with sexuality. Looking at some of the hate in those comments is like walking into a lion’s den.

It gives me hope that the vast majority of the comments are people tired of the immorality all around us, and yet the hate in some of the others is astounding and discouraging.

I have several e-mails and most of the time manage to resist the sensationalist stories on the homepages. Though now and again there’s something of interest that’s not so bad. But I avoid the trashy ones. I am so not interested in, for instance, the drama of the K sisters’ lives.

And I learned long ago not to read the comments on any site that doesn’t moderate and delete the trolly comments. It’s refreshing to read intelligent, thoughtful comments sometimes. You just have to know where you’re likely to find them or not find them.

Don’t worry about RCIA, it has more problems than a dog has fleas. Again we do what we can do being a bunch of slobs on earth.

May God bless and keep you. May God’s face shine on you. May God be kind to you and give you peace.

Ps. have you said your rosary today?
