I keep having impure dreams and thoughts upon waking

Hey everyone. I don’t know what to do. I am fed up with this. I am afraid I am committing a mortal sin but I don’t know for sure because I don’t know whether or not I have full consent of the will during the first few seconds after I have woken up. Anyway, it has become rather common lately for me to have impure (pornographic) dreams which continue into the first few seconds after I wake up. I absolutely hate this. The thoughts always stop after a few seconds of having woken up but it is driving me nuts. I always end up feeling guilty afterwards and I just don’t know what to do. Is this mortally sinful or is it impossible to have full consent of your will within a few seconds after you wake up?

I have had the same thing happen from time to time. I don’t believe you can have full consent of the will when you are just coming out of a deep sleep…still in a haze. When you finally come to your senses and are “awake”, I assume you are no longer purposefully dwelling on the thoughts/images and that you stop, or make an effort to “change teh subject”?

As soon as one becomes aware of such – (and one is able to) -simply turn your thoughts to some other subject. Perhaps have a ready subject --like “I wonder why so many frogs are green?”

What if you are aware of your thoughts but you are in a very deep haze? That is what happens to me. I am aware of my thoughts but either I don’t have control over them or I don’t realize that they are sinful because I am half asleep.

Such could of course the the case --but such need not involve any sin on the part of person involved. Thoughts can “accost” one wake or asleep without any consent…

If you are half asleep, you are not in full control of your thoughts. Even if you are aware of the dream on some level, that doesn’t mean you have control.

I know I’ve had dreams where I realized I was dreaming and it seemed like I had control, but after waking, I realized I had no idea what I was really doing and definitely did not have control.

I’m not sure if this is true or not, but I wonder if, when we beat ourselves up over things like this, if the extra time thinking about episodes like this might actually increase the chance that it will happen again in the future. Something to consider.

You know, you make a good point about obsessing over the thoughts. I know that if I have a temptation and obsess over it, the temptation only becomes stronger. I could be sitting here and all of a sudden be tempted to do something sinful and if I strive against it with all my might, the temptation only becomes stronger. However, if I change my thoughts to something either neutral or holy (which is the best thing to do) then the temptation almost always goes away. I realized this a while back. I was so glad that I did because it makes dealing with temptation so much easier.

That said, I did ask God about whether or not I committed any sin and He told me that I committed no sin whatsoever because I was not in control of my mind.

I know it may sound strange for someone to have an actual conversation with God but it happens with me all of the time. I think its called an interior locution but I am not sure.

Have you noticed when you have these dreams / thoughts in terms of your cycle ? I know that for me my hormones play funny tricks.

But don’t beat yourself up about it, I don’t think you are not doing anything sinful as long as you realise the nature of these thought, which you obviously do and most importantly that you don’t act on them.
