Hello CAF and thanks for the warm welcome.

I have been struggling with drug and porn and sex addiction the past several years which have intensified the past several months. I am on drugs for depression but the new drugs just make everything a lot worse and i feel way more suicidal but I am hoping they eventually work. I have done some truly embarrassing and immoral things with regards to my sex and porn addiction.

I guess my question is Should I keep attending mass and going to confession when I keep giving in to my sinful addictions. At a certain point I feel like jesus would be insulted by my presence and I should just stay away until I am worthy enough to be in the presence of God.

Thank you

Yes of course keep going to both. We need grace more when we are ill!

I hope you are getting treatment for the depression and your addictions.

Talk to your pastor when you have concerns. Build a relationship with him so he can help you!

Never stop! Go daily if possible! Get with a good priest and do in person, no anonymity confessions frequently. And seek help from professionals as well.
I’ve heard that voice too, the one telling me my recurring sin (lust/ pornography) is too much and I may as well quit tarnishing the temple.
That voice is Satan’s dear friend.
Go to Mass.

I will pray for you!
You should DEFINITELY keep going to Mass and to Confession, and when in a state of grace, Communion. You NEED that strength. If you’re able to go to daily Mass, do so even if you can’t or don’t receive the Eucharist.
Start praying the Rosary, even if you can just do a decade at the time. Get treatment for your depression (especially with the suicidal thoughts), besides the medicines. You may be able to address the addictions there.
Ask for the intercession of your patron saint as well as saints that either stand out to you or are specifically patrons for your issues. Some great ones are St. Augustine, St. Joseph, Mother Mary, St. Maria Goretti, St. Dominic Savio, St. Catherine of Siena, St. Agnes, St. Maximilian Kolbe, and so many more!
Begin each day with praying the Guardian Angel prayer and the St. Michael prayer. Try and remove any temptations. If that means blocking sites on your computer and phone and forgetting the password for parental control, so be it. Throw out impure magazines, books, etc. if those are leading you to sin. Fill your time with good hobbies so that you’re busy and it’s harder to have time for those bad things. Contact a priest and try and set up a meeting time and talk about your struggles, this way you don’t hold up the confessional line and can really address the root issue.
Definitely give those Father Mike videos a watch. He’s awesome.
Perhaps buy a Green Scapular as it is attributed to conversions and healing (mentally and physically). Get it blessed by your priest and say the Immaculate Mary prayer every day. Maybe wear a blessed Miraculous Medal or another Catholic medal and ask for the prayers of whomever is on that medal. They are not charms, keep that in mind. Instead, they are reminders and sacramentals.
A lot of saints praise the effects of Adoration so check into local Catholic Churches and see if they have a Holy Hour or a time for Adoration and go spend some time with Jesus!
Please don’t give up! The Devil wants that more than anything but God is ALWAYS there for you. He doesn’t want to see you stumble and fall but He permits it to cleanse you. Sometimes, as humans, we just can’t stay strong enough. That’s why there is Confession and so many additional ways for us to be strengthened.
May God Bless you!

YES! Attend Mass! Go to confession, and pray about this! God will help you! Jesus would actually be insulted if you did not go to Mass, because while we are ALL unworthy, we have God’s forgiveness. Just have faith in Him and you will overcome these temptations! Remember Jesus ate with sinners.

Luke 17:6: “But the Lord said: ‘If you have faith like a grain of a mustard seed, you may say to this mulberry tree, ‘Be uprooted, and be transplanted into the sea.’ And it would obey you.’”

Matthew 9:13: “So then, go out and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy and not sacrafice.’ For I have not come to call the just, but sinners.”

How will dropping out of Catholicism make things better? Pretending that your problems aren’t problems doesn’t make them go away.

I know how you feel
Felt this way when I first realized I was addicted to porn
But I realized if I hate sinning then what good is it for me to sin by leaving God’s church?
I was left no choice but to try and fail
It hurts and gets annoying but God reminds us that the teachable heart will one day overcome

Your addictions don’t define you
And it’s an addiction it’s not easy
But remain trying even if you’re attempts feel small
The devil wants to make your strides towards freedom feel small and insignificant

Human are imperfect; change what can be changed and accept what cannot. And pull up a pew with the rest of us sinners- namely everybody!

Did you not hear that Jesus said a doctor comes to heal the sick not the healthy?
You are confusing attending Church with receiving Communion perhaps?

In fact noone is worthy of Communion yet we come forward because Jesus said its OK.

However the Church does have some customary external disciplines re receiving Communion which we should respect. If those customary rules counsel us not to receive it has little to do with being less worthy before God than others. We are all unworthy.

However we are not to cause public scandal to the weak, nor are we to just take Communion for granted.
We receive just as many graces by attending Mass even when these rules counsel us to not receive at this time. Usually this is remedied by Confession beforehand if the cause is consciousness of wilfully engaging in grave matters.

God bless.

Hi Brother! I think that you must have the Sacrament of Penance ,I think that Sacrament of Penance can help you. Some of your sins are Mortal. You can attend Mass but we Catholics who have Mortal Sins can not take a Communion. You can chat with me at my Facebook Account , please search for me: 告尤金 Thank you!

By all means continue going to mass and confession. No one is perfect.

As a great priest I know likes to point out, the devil makes a terrible spiritual director.

At a certain point I feel like jesus would be insulted by my presence and I should just stay away until I am worthy enough to be in the presence of God.
On the contrary, you actually have a moral obligation before God to continue to fight your sins and addiction, which includes making use of mass and confession. To do otherwise for the reason you gave is just false humility.

Yes yes yes
Keep going! The Church is a hospital for sinners, not a social club for perfect people.
Keep going to confession and attend Mass often, that’s what it’s there for.
If a parish had no sinners, it would dry up and whither away.

Dear CatholicMale,

Do not try to formulate the faith by analyzing your condition. Confession/Eucharist have an end purpose, not just there for us to go do things and live out a religion. Like some said above, the Church is the hospital for us the patients to whom Christ the only eligible doctor administers His unique medicine. What matters is that you have a contrite heart which means a willing and sorrowful, also humble, heart that accepts his illness and asks for treatment. Trust me, we have all been there at some point; masturbation, pre-marital sex and porn, etc. And don’t get me wrong, it is not easy, i know it by experience. However, remember we are NEVER worthy of Christ on our own and by our own efforts. If we were, He would not have been called the Redeemer, and we would not be in need of His mercy. Nevertheless, this does not mean go and live out your life the way you like it which for most people means wallowing in sin. If it weren’t for the Holy Spirit, you would not be even here worrying about any of this. Therefore, recognize the problem, acknowledge it and move on through the steps of the recovery. The best and all you can do is co-operate with the Spirit, meaning that, just put an honest and willing effort into getting better and being more Holy.

A priest that i frequently talk to told me once that I had been committing the sin of Pride, just because i used to tell him that i was not feeling ready to go to Confession, hence delaying my recovery and reconciliation with the Lord. I said, HOW COME? He says, well you do believe that you can get to a worthy state at some point, then you will confess, and that, in and of itself, is a major offense against the Lord.

So remember: “Lord, I am NOT worthy that you should enter under my roof, but only say the word and my soul shall be healed!”

All the more reason to keep going to confession, mass and being in union with the sacraments only found in the church 🙂

The Church is EXACTLY where you belong:)
Keep coming please.

The Church is not a museum of Saints, it is a hospital for sinners.

Yes please keep approaching the sacraments and always keep trusting God. The very fact that you are open to it and looking for help shows that God is working and calling you back. Will pray for you.

Please check out Divine Retreat center (branches across the world) . They offer catholic based healing(physical and emotional) retreats and it may help you in your journey.

Or any other retreat centers , that may help you break free for a while.

Everyone who has responded to you is a sinner, of course you should stay Catholic and keep going to Mass. I believe, if I recall correctly, it was Chesterton who said he decided to be Catholic when his umbrella was stolen from a church. The Church is for Saints and sinners, alike.
