A just for fun thread. It seems like all of the threads on here dealing with spouses/finances/serious SOs focus on the negative. In the spirit of remembering to focus on the good tell everyone what it was that made you sure that you wanted to spend the rest of your life with your spouse.

The way he treats people: that is, he is no different with those who can give him something or who have authority than he is with those from whom he can get nothing. He is just as good to everyone. That told me that a) the good treatment I was getting was not going to end with the courtship and b) there was no group of people I wouldn’t be happy to be in with him.

I was moving out of town in 1 week, he ran into a friend of mine downtown, asked about me, she gave him my number, he called, we met and the spark was still there. It was simply too coincidental that they bumped into each other (literally) that day, when it might have happened too late for us to see each other again. Also, he had the courage to call me when we hadn’t spoken in at least 2 years. I still moved (for college) but we stayed an item and eventually we married.

He was reading the ending of Charlotte’s Web to his daughters and was weeping openly with them. And his eldest twin, arms around his neck, comforted him by saying, “It’s Okay, Daddy. Everything’s going to be Okay.” :bighanky:

Awwwwww…

:bighanky:

What a tender heart.

There’s so much I could say.

One of the main reasons is that whenever I was with her, I felt truly alive and happy. She always brought out the best in me. She brought strength and purpose to our relationship, rather than need and dependency. Of all the women I dated in my life, she was the one I wanted most. We’ll celebrate 32 years of happy matrimony on April 12th, and our mutually-held Catholic faith is at the heart of our success.

Warning: Don’t get too caught up in the idea: “This is the man God has chosen for me to marry.” God will let you make your own decisions, even bad ones.

Blessings to all my friends in these forums… - Rob in Oregon

…when my consciousness began to return and I suddenly woke up. 😉

…the pregnancy test came back positive. Only kidding 🙂

…her father had his shotgun out and was insisting I marry her. 🙂 Not this one.

…she had her trusty granite rolling pin with her and would not take NO for an answer. Yup only a tad better.

LULZ I don’t have any1 at the moment but thought I would add these 3 anecdotes.

When he walked up to my dad, looked him straight in the eye and shook his hand. I knew he had honorable intentions, because my dad looks mean enough to scare any cad away!

When I realized that we had been talking incessantly for weeks and still had no end of things to say. He is the most fascinating man I have ever known.

There are, of course, the other answers, about his hard-working nature, about his protectiveness toward me and our daughters, about the beauty of his blue eyes, about his crooked smile, which still, after over 14 years of marriage, brings flutters to my stomach – but really I knew when we married. Then he became my “one and only”, forever.

He has to work this morning, and I am home with the three littlest ones. And I cannot wait for his return. (And, no, it has nothing to do with wanting him to help with the babies.) I just love being around him. I would rather be with him than with anyone else.

Although she ended up breaking up with me to join a religious community, what caught my eye was that she ate her chicken similar to the way I did (there is a back story from a cousin’s BBQ years ago that would make clear the significance of it).

I just knew when I met him he was the man I would marry,
Not a decision, just knew, quite calmly

It seems like my now-husband and I always knew we would marry. Like it was a quiet, deep-seated knowledge that planted itself in our hearts. Cheesy, but it’s the only way I can explain it. Neither of us suddenly had a spark, a moment of clarity where we said “Aha! THIS is who I want to marry!” But both of us admit that we were so enamored with each other, even when we first started dating, that we couldn’t envision life without the other. Our second date - we were still in high school!- we had this amazing conversation full of our dreams of the future. He brought up the idea of marriage and having a family, and even though he didn’t say it, I know when he spoke about his future wife he was thinking about me. I was surprised and delighted that God had put such a mature, family-minded boy in my life at the age of 17. 🙂

I love(d) how comfortable we are around each other, our openness, our candor, how tender my husband is, our shared faith, our common dreams, his commitment to family, how he supports me in anything I do, how he is such an example of Christ’s unconditional and merciful love.

He’s not perfect and neither is our marriage, but I do know that our relationship is one that refines and sanctifies each of us. We are better people because of each other.

The second I saw my wife for the first time, it was like a light went on in my head and I knew why God had put me on this earth. She certainly wasn’t the sort of girl I ever envisioned marrying–she’d had our son several weeks before we met, didn’t go to a Catholic school, etc.–but as soon as I saw her, I knew she was the person I wanted to spend my life with. Unfortunately, I didn’t have the courage to ask her out and we ended up losing touch with one another. Then I ran into about 2 years after we first met and. I was drunk out of my mind when I saw her, which gave me the self-confidence I needed to ask her out, and for whatever reason she said yes. I got cold feet the next day and almost didn’t go through with it, but when I went to pick her up, as soon as she walked into the living room I had that exact same light go off in my head and I knew that, this time, I was with her for good. We’ve been together ever since, and I love her more now than I ever could have even imagined back then.

I was walking around the office building brooding over things that annoyed me about him and as I was walking over a snowbank when something hit and I could just see myself married to him. I could see us working through everything in a very similiar approach to problems and what not. This was all while he was studying abroad in Oxford. Similiarly, he admitted to me that he’d get angry at me because as he was comtemplating decisions, he’d think about how I might respond and would end up having ficticious arguments with an imaginary me.

I don’t know. We realized that we’re both two very bizzarre people who are bizzarre in a similiar manner and just match really well together. We’ve never expected perfection out of each other. Strangely enough, I’m actually far less annoyed with him as his wife than I was while I was courting him. I feel far more “in love” now than I did when I married him.

2 things:

-When we had our first misunderstandings or disagreements and she wanted to sit down and “talk it out” and we did, calmly and reasonably each time.

-On the extremely rare occasion (early in our relationship) that she would ever make a backhanded insult to me or have a harsh word, she would immediately apologize and we would explore what she was feeling that caused her to express herself inappropriately. (And, conversely, when she would accept my apologies for the same behavior and help me get grow in love and patience as well.)

…when I decided to love her.

I used to walk my dog every night when she was a puppy. I used to “talk” her about my future wife, all the good things about her and the things that I didn’t like. I loved my future wife, but the question was, could I commmit in marriage to her? We did/do have many similiar likes, goals and vaulues. Ultimately I realized that marriage and love is a commitment, actions that you demonstrate to your spouse.

I had to re-learn that lesson the hard way three years ago when my wife confessed to me she loved me, but wasn’t in love with me. I had grown selfish and did not focus my love on her as I should. I still believe she is “the one”, it is a decision I make every day…and happy to make. I love that my wife confessed to me what she did because it forced me to look at myself, strengthen my faith and love her more deeply. That certainly wasn’t how I felt three years ago, but the Lord has a funny way of continuing to call us too Him and serve one another. I was too arrogant, stubborn and opinionated to see that at first. Now I understand my vocation to my wife and family. I do want to help get my wife and children to Heaven and I can do that by loving her unconditionally. 🙂 I believe that my wife will see that someday as well and love the way Christ asks us too.

Please…If God ever calls you to help other married couples, or married men, to see what you have seen, to know what you have discovered, let me know so that I can pray for you. So many men in our society never get this principle. I am thankful that you did. God bless you.

…when I decided to love her.
Thank you for reminding me that love is a decision. I forget in the day-to-day-ness of life, and get carried away by all the things that bother me about my husband. We are having a hard time, and I feel like I am drifting further and further away from him emotionally. I need to be invested in it, and work at it, and it needs to be my decision. Thank you, you have given me the little emotional kick in the backside that I needed!
