Hello… I have been struggling with a certain issue for a long time. Over a decade now… as you can imagine it gets old and daily I wonder “what am I doing wrong?” I have been to counseling, talked to priest and nuns… still no help. I have tried spiritual advisors… but I don’t have the money to talk to one consistently. And since its the same issue even when I talk to someone we reach a stalemate…

Recently when I find myself in the circular thought “what do I do?”, “what am I doing wrong”, “please God help me” and the like. I take a breath and say “Jesus I trust in you” I have found this helpful… problem is that the sneaking voice of self doubt starts in - - “you can still screw up you know”… “like you would know what God is telling you”… “what about those TV preachers who slept with other women and said God told me to do it”

How do others keep those self doubts from sabotaging themselves? How do I counter that?

I guess much depends on your strength of character , if your anything like me,
Then you’ll be weak as water, you could do what I do,we’ll try to,
Is sing either the Lord’s Prayer or even perhaps some modern songs,
Or maybe perhaps get into some social group that keeps you out of the house,
It’s ok to doubt yourself or other situation, just need to find ways to improve self confidence,

Treat it as a temptation. This could be a trap the devil is setting for you that you are falling into, or it could just be from your self or the world, but in any case, when it happens, pray, pray pray to keep from assenting to thinking those types of thoughts.

St Ignatius has some rules for discerning the spirits. I have not found a good explanation of them online, but you can read them and there are books explaining them for lay people. Here is a list just of the rules themselves.

It is a temptation … to focus on self. It’s kind of another sort of pride … instead of “I’m so great!” it’s “I’m such a loser.”

I struggle with this too, part of the mild depression I battle, I guess. The best thing to turn me around is to praise God - thank Him, list all the ways He is SO GOOD. I also have made a habit of noticing “little blessings” throughout the day - from a beautiful sunrise to sun sparkling on snow to hearing a child laugh to someone holding a door open for me. Notice them, mark them as “blessing” and thank the LORD.

One more thing is something I heard recently. Someone advised we pray for the grace to see how great God’s love is for us.

Good luck anytimequilter … persevere in prayer!

First of all, I’m curious as to why you think there is no answer? Is God incapable or are you just not able to hear from Him?

If it were me, I would ignore all those thoughts and live by my faith alone…that is whatever my faith tells me I should live. That is why we have the church and our faith…to instruct us what to do. Judge actions to take by christian principles alone and ignore all those other thoughts for a good while.

I don’t know what your moral life is like, but I do know the first principle is to live in the state of love with God…sanctifying grace. Work on the things that you know need correction and improvement that would please God.

For now, ignore all private inspirations which even the greatest of saints have had a difficult time understanding.

Talk this over with the priest in the confessional.

In the AA model, it is one day at a time. Each day not succumbing to the addiction is a victory. You may want to look for a support group for your issue; there seems to be one for just about everything. Christianity is not just about you and God. It is about you and others and God. Good luck and God bless your efforts.

If you truly believe you “screw up” from time to time, like most of us do, then it would seem that our value in this life is based on weighing good v bad.

But that was what we had before Jesus came, because it turns out we can’t “behave rightly” to get into heaven. So the law of sin and death, is replaced by the law of spirit and life, as explained in Rom 8. Rom 7 is good too because it explains a lot about the two laws.

For those who are perishing, “screwing up” would indicate a transgression against the law. This may seem strange but really believe that you “screw up” and thereby making the world a Worse Place To Be, that is an artifact of judgment. Continue to work on growing in the spirit, and for golly sake spend much more time reading/listening to the words of Jesus and Paul, rather than the words that are written about them – including dogmatic teachings. That’s a bit like the Mary/Martha thing. Yes you work and support the structure of the church, but when you want to spend time with the Lord, do what His parents told us to do. His Father and mother told us, respectively, to “listen to Him” and to “do what He says.”

Ultimately, if you can really invest your imagination into Rom 8:28 and pretend there is a world where even mistakes are part of its goodness, that can maybe help. In fact all of Rom 8 is a good idea to check out.

Rom 8:28
We know that all things work for good for those who love God, who are called according to his purpose.

And a little about how mixed up a person can be, acc’d to Paul in Rom 7:

Rom 7:15-25
What I do, I do not understand. For I do not do what I want, but I do what I hate. Now if I do what I do not want, I concur that the law is good. So now it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells in me. For I know that good does not dwell in me, that is, in my flesh. The willing is ready at hand, but doing the good is not. For I do not do the good I want, but I do the evil I do not want. Now if * do what I do not want, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells in me. So, then, I discover the principle that when I want to do right, evil is at hand. For I take delight in the law of God, in my inner self, but I see in my members another principle at war with the law of my mind, taking me captive to the law of sin that dwells in my members. Miserable one that I am! Who will deliver me from this mortal body? Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord. Therefore, I myself, with my mind, serve the law of God but, with my flesh, the law of sin.*

Thank you all so much for your thoughts. I do appreciate that you all took the time to respond
It’s ok to doubt yourself or other situation, just need to find ways to improve self confidence,
I don’t believe I know how to improve my self confidence - at least not in the areas that are my weakest
Treat it as a temptation.
This is something that I do try sometimes…but I have found that when I am in that “mode” the thoughts do grow stronger. Sort of like being on a diet and thinking about cake… But what I have found is that when I think of these things as a temptation, its much less overwhelming and less personal feeling. Thank you for the link. I really like having “food for thought”
First of all, I’m curious as to why you think there is no answer? Is God incapable or are you just not able to hear from Him?
I only doubt myself. If Moses could be lost in the desert for all of those years, then no doubt I can get lost, misunderstand and do wrong. I suppose I meant there is no answer because every person is so unique and every situation is so unique, that one person’s answer would most likely not be another person’s solution.

I agree 100%. But not every situation is either a sin or not a sin. Some things are not sinful but may not be what is best for yourself - - may not be what God wants for you. I am not talking about should I skip church or sleep around. Its more like what time should I go to the adoration chapel? I have this quilt that I so should I give it to the new mother or the new grandmother or a different baby? Those are my last 2 issues. Sounds silly I know, but what does God want me to do? (the new mother is a young lady I have seen in the adoration chapel but I don’t know her. The new grandmother I work with)

Mystical Seeker - is that what the Wesleyans would call the “Roman Road”? I had a preacher who was a teacher in a class I took who really turned me off to the “Roman Road” just because of how he preached and how he didn’t like me being Catholic

Some things are not sinful but may not be what is best for yourself - - may not be what God wants for you.
The scripture has said that there is good, better, and best. Good is a matter of degree.
Or Jesus said that the seed that falls on good ground produces 100 fold, 60 fold or 30 fold.
So good is not measured always to the same degree, nor do people produce in the same measured degree.

It is your call as to what you select to do in the matter of good. It isn’t wrong to select just the good and not the best or better. It really depends on the degree of love. But it isn’t wrong to select less as long as it is good.

So let your heart be your guide.

I get that completely… so if we believe the God has a plan then that would believe me that his plan would be the result of 100 fold. Correct?

If I make a choice for good (not better or best) will I be cutting myself out of some of what God had planned?

No, it is just a matter of what you want. He gives you the choice.

For instance, I could go roller skating, or spend the day with the family. Nothing wrong with either but it is up to the person to decide. I might give $5 or $10 to a good cause, it is up to me, but both are good.

Ok then… why do some people’s lives seem to be more sucessful than others? Are they not using the talents that God gave them to the most of their abilities? Why are some people alone in life and others are not? Are they not going into the circles of life to find the friends that God wants for them? If they are not doing anything “wrong” then are they not doing the “right things”? (ie to get a better job, spend their money wisely, spend time with the right people, ect…)

I understand where you’re coming from. We’re doing good things but not connecting. Not progressing. You spoke of Moses. God certainly had a will and a plan for him, yet things didn’t work out for him right away. Moses at first had a good impression of God’s will. He deeply felt that it was God’s will for him to set his people free from bondage, so one day he defended a Hebrew who was being beaten by an Egyptian master. In rage, he killed him. As a result he had to flee and spend 40 years hiding in the desert. He intended good, but it went wrong. Why? It was because he missed God’s timing, and he missed God’s way. He went by a feeling but didn’t have a mature relationship with God. This all changed after the burning bush experience. You see, we also need something like a “burning bush” experience. Nothing will seem right for us until we get on the inside track of God’s will. For others life may be going great but when nothing works, it may mean God is seeking us. He is not trying to motivate us to do better. He is trying to move us closer to Himself. There are many ways to know Him. It depends on your personality, but the all involve much diligence and dedication. But once you get into God’s presence, it will be more than worth it . Everything in the saint’s life flows from their relationship with God. One who knew it well was a 17th C. French monk known as Brother Lawrence. As a start, i suggest the book about him called “The Practice of the Presence of God” . It may be read for free online or listen on YouTube. Also there is the book “A Simple and Easy Method of Prayer” by Maddam Guyan. It will help you to learn to read and meditate the scriptures.

Best wishes,

Jerry

Ok then… why do some people’s lives seem to be more sucessful than others?
Correct me if I’m wrong, but the success you are pointing to is one of material success?
So that some have it good in this life while others don’t.

But you know of course that that is not how God measures success, tho we tend to measure it in that way (unfortunately). He looks at the heart…the goodness of the heart, and basically nothing else.

So assuming this is correct about the heart, everyone is equal in their opportunity to become great in the eyes of God. But we know that hearts come in all varieties and not just one big one.

This would mean that the ugly person that everyone shuns is just as equal in the eye of God as anyone else. “Blessed are the poor for they shall inherit the earth.” Which means that when all is said and done, they will inherit the earth in God’s kingdom and be rich and beautiful. So we are all equal in that sense…of our heart.

Now looking at this life and what is considered success here and now, it is a different matter, because this is judged by men as important and not by God as important.

Jesus was born into poverty, and did not gain material world type success.

It was because he missed God’s timing, and he missed God’s way
that is how I feel, but exactly what can you do about it? I often feel like its hopeless… We can’t manufacture our own “burning bush” moment… Thank you for the reading suggestions I will check into them.
Correct me if I’m wrong, but the success you are pointing to is one of material success? So that some have it good in this life while others don’t.
No not really. I understand how people can have good lives and not have material success. That is what I am missing. I don’t want a fancy car or a big house (I do need a roof over my head and transportation - but my car is 7 years old and I know that brand new car won’t give me what I am missing)

The first thing is to be able to write it the way you have here. You have exactly described the problem that our culture works very hard to create in us. Consumerism.

In Jesus’s time they had the same thing, just like now but without TV ads and professional marketing departments using (and driving) psychological research to learn how to best create the feelings of want and need.

That’s where the rich man walked sadly away when Jesus told him to lose all his stuff. It wasn’t that he had the stuff as much as his attachment to it. Jesus could sense that, the same way we can sense in the speech and behavior who is “so up there” that they just don’t get what it’s like to not have the stuff.

As it is, you probably feel lucky to have the car you do, and hopefully it works and does not cost greatly in maintenance. But imagine being without it – it breaks down and just no way to afford fixing or replacing it. Would your life immediately go into the trash? Or would it be just be a “different path” to walk?

Shedding these values, built into us before we were old enough to think on our own (and thus preventing our ability to in the future) can be quite a chore, and in some cases like mine involve a full blown “Dark Night” experience complete with psychosis. Luckily with some great help and support, the Divine Therapist (aka the Holy Spirit) has seen me healed to my joy and desire to “shout from the rooftops” what the Lord has done. And looking back, the “Dark Night” including those “horrible” things that others did, was the most beautiful and elaborate “show” I’ve ever seen, and it is clear how it all works for benefit like Rom 8:28. It’s easy to forget now and then, and then it auto-extends to purify something that is probably more deep and subtle than the “obvious” stuff.

Actually that’s kind of weird because when I think I’ve lost a layer of pretentiousness, something much more subtle comes up, and I see myself becoming very bothered over what seems less terrible than the stuff I quit getting upset over. It’s kind of like once the noise dies down and it seems quiet, soon my ears accommodate and I notice things that are “bad” that I’ve never noticed before and Get Upset Over It! So not only do I get upset, but I get upset with myself for getting upset, and it just seems ridiculous. It wasn’t a problem, until I lost other problems. My mind has thus been programmed to “awfulize” the situation at any given time and come “hell or high water” it WILL find a problem so that I can have a reason to exist, in order to either fix it, complain about it, or maybe “help others” through it.

The kingdom Jesus talks about is right here, right now, for those who can see it. It is a way to be in the same place you are now physically, with the same surrounding that don’t look any different, but with a certain perspective that makes the moment excellent and blessed because it exists and you are able to perceive it – at a level that does not require any worldly conditions to improve first. If I’m always looking at “what needs to be fixed” in the world, or even “what am I supposed to fix next” that can work against it. It’s tricky to navigate between “I’m going to make the world better” and “the world is perfect as it is.” The first sounds like a “purpose” but actually is pride bait.

But there is a trap hiding in your own statement, and that is “I need a roof over my head and transportation.” The key here is “need”. I’ve never actually been without a home, although we’ve gone without heat in the winter until a kind soul gave us a new furnace. But why do I need this? Because I hate to imagine me, ME, living without that. I am completely in your camp; I’ve danced around losing a home but never have – and it scares me that within a few years if something changes (or other things don’t) it Could Happen to Me. I’ve helped out at homeless shelters and I see people in this situation, but it is so far removed from my personal experience that I feel a great difference between them and me. I have a certain respect for them, that I do not have for myself.

To be clear, I am not looking for material things at all. As I know they will not give me what I am looking for. It is more the lack of human connection, understanding. I am very isolated in my life and I can’t find the solution that I need

In all honesty, I would be in trouble… so one way or another they car would definitely get fixed. I need my car to get to work. I work 25 miles from home and there is no public transportation where I live. If I lost my job I then could not provide for my kids and myself. One thing I know for certain is that I need to provide for my children. As long as my children are under my car that is my path to take.

Isn’t this human nature? In all honesty, there will always be changes that can be made - that doesn’t mean its a bad thing to change them - or that’s it bad not to change them. When you only complain is where people get stuck - either accept it, change it or shut up. 🙂 That is where I am now - because I don’t know how to fix it. I have tried all that I know. Then when I think “let go and let God” or “Jesus I trust in you” I have these thoughts I must be doing something wrong or God would help me fix this situation. Or maybe God is helping but I am missing his direction and on and on and on…
I’ve danced around losing a home but never have – and it scares me that within a few years if something changes (or other things don’t) it Could Happen to Me.
This is what my counselor would tell me was a self fulfilling prophecy. I don’t quite understand why, but she said it happens. When we allow our fears to become real. Again I don’t understand her… when I want the good things they never materialize 🙂

As a particular priest has put it, a lot of the time, demonic temptation takes the form of an abusive relationship—and the problem there is that people try to argue against the abuse. Don’t try to reason with the thoughts and find ways in which they intellectually aren’t as sound as alternative understandings. That’s the basis for an “abusive relationship” being set up. Rather, tell the voice/thoughts: If you see it that way, then that’s *your *problem, not mine. Distance yourself from the thoughts in that manner.
