I lied about being baptized

When I got married to my wife I lied about being baptized to get the process done. Then years later I wanted to convert because I saw how much joy it brought to my wife. I stuck with the lie. I want to go to confession can I?
 
I’d say you need to have a talk with your priest, either in confession or outside of it.

Just to clarify, did you convert and enter the Catholic Church and receive confirmation and the Eucharist?

According to the Code of Canon law:

Can. 842 §1. A person who has not received baptism cannot be admitted validly to the other sacraments.

If you were never baptized you need to talk to your priest because according to this canon you are not permitted to receive the Eucharist or reconciliation until baptized. I’d also assume that your confirmation was invalid.

No I was baptised and said that I was not.
 
Even if you find it embarrassing you need to speak to your priest about the Sacraments, including baptism. I’m surprised that you were not required to present proof of your baptism at time of marriage.
It is good that you are ready to address this now.

Okay, so you were baptized but said you were not baptized? I’d still recommend you talk to your priest about this and they can clarify things for you.

The short answer is yes…

But I recommend making an appointment with your priest so that you can straighten everything out and make sure that all your Sacraments were valid. It sounds like they probably were…if you were a Baptized Christian when you received the other Sacraments, you should be in the clear.

Your Catholic Baptism, however, was probably not valid. If you were already Baptized Christian, you shouldn’t have been ‘re-baptized’ (which is a theological impossibility). Only when there is some question about the validity of the original Baptism is a conditional Baptism performed, where the minister would say “If you are not Baptized, I Baptize you in the name of the…” – that way we keep our beliefs straight about there only being on Baptism.

I would ask the Priest when you meet with him what your responsibilities are with regard to Confession…you will certainly need to Confess this, but if you have had other confessions in the mean time and intentionally withheld this sin, there is question as to their validity…but he can help you work that out too, and perhaps even hear your confession right then and there.

Also what church was the first baptism in? It may not be recognized as valid by the Catholic Church.
 
Maybe it’s because it’s getting late and I’m tired, but your thread confused me. :confused: I have to echo the others and say speak to your priest. Those who were already baptized in my RCIA class had to have proof of their baptism as well as go to confession before being confirmed – did you do any of that? Does your wife know now that you were baptized before you got married? Sorry for the questions, I’m just trying to get a more clear idea of what’s going on.

Yes I was baptised and I said that I was not. Then got married then converted after that.

I’d go to Confession and confess it since you were already baptized…it’s a duplication of what shouldn’t have been duplicated but nothing more.
