Hi! So I’m new to CAF and this is my first question.
First let me say that I’ve recently joined the Faith, but I’m not baptized yet. And I’m only 17 year old girl so please don’t give me hate on this. Thank You.

So there is this singer I really like and his name is Adam. I recently found out he is openly gay and used to have a boyfriend. I really enjoy his music and it’s fairly clean (well the ones I listen to) and he’s very gorgeous. He doesn’t talk about being gay at all, so he doesn’t throw it in his fans faces or anything like that. For some reason though, I feel like I’m doing something wrong because I like him. I’ve watched his interviews and such and he’s a really nice, sweet, funny guy.
Is it wrong that I like him? Is this a sin? Is God upset with me that I do? Should I continue to listen to his music and have pictures of him on my computer and phone?:confused: I want to tell my mom that I like him, but she’s a hard-core catholic and I’m afraid she might get mad. I know it sound childish, but I really need some advice.
Thank you for reading.

Through the years there have been many homosexual musicians and composers. For some reason Cole Porter comes to my mind. Yes before our time.

But you can enjoy their music without recommending their homosexuality.

The 1980’s was my music era. I had a crush on George Michael and Boy George. I had posters of them on my walls.I also brought a book about Boy George with my birthday money. When I found out that they were gay, it didn’t stop me listening to their music. I still like the music,I just don’t listen to it now because my taste in music has changed.

There is a difference between a person and their private behavior. You can still like a person or their work without condoning their behavior. As long as he isn’t promoting homosexuality I don’t think there is a problem.

Kind of like smoking although smoking isn’t a mortal sin and is less harmful (takes an average of 10 years off one’s life instead of 20). You can still like someone who happens to be a smoker without condoning their behavior. But if they start promoting smoking (especially to impressionable kids, teens and college kids) then it might be good to back away a bit.

The church is very clear in her teaching that unjust discrimination of any kind on the grounds of a person’s sexuality is not to be tolerated.
This singer is not in a profession which would make his private life any of your business. Therfore to pry into his private life or seek gossip about him is a sin. Similarly to boycott him because of his side and weaknesses is unjust discrimination.

If he were publicly saying he was a Christian and simultaneously being out and proud and can painting for Gary marriage then that would baa a did rent matter. But if his surreal preference is not Key theme in his music then following his music career is not wrong.

Turns out that gay people living in bigoted places live twelve years shorter than those living in not as bigoted places (due to suicide, homicide, and cardiovascular diseases).

It’s not sinful to like gay singers.

As long as the music doesn’t celebrate having gay sex, what possible objection could there be? Gay people are entitled to make a living, just as we all do.

Is this serious? Or is this a joke? WHO CARES IF HE’S GAY. If you don’t “agree” with it, fine. If you INTERPRET the Bible as being “anti-gay”, then fine. But someone else’s life does NOT have an effect on yours. If you like his music, great! Listen to it. But to even think that by HIM being gay that it reflects on you is ridiculous. I’m republican, that’s like me saying, “I have a friend, this friend is democrate, should I be concerned that I might be doing my 'party” a disservice?" Really now… the answer is YOU’LL BE FINE! If your mom has an issue w/ it, then she needs to be reminded who Jesus is.

Nothing wrong with homosexuality. 🙂

I met Boy George outside a theatre in London once, waiting for my then-girlfriend to get out of a show. This theatre’s entrance isn’t on a main street, so there weren’t many of us, and he was also waiting for the show to end. He was super-friendly to all of us, esp. a few middle-aged women who couldn’t get over the fact that he was, well, him. 😛

Trial membership troll?

Obviously it’s bad for you.
Homosexuality per se is not immoral, that’s a fact. Homosexuality is disordered only so far as it is an attraction to a moral evil (inherently sterile sex). That attraction to sex with the same sex is only a small part of homosexuality.

This. And that’s really all that needs to be said about it on this thread. If Skeptical wants to discuss homosexuality, they’re more than welcome to do so in the apologetics section. 🙂

Even if this singer were unrepentant and in a constant state of mortal sin (which we can’t possibly know), it still wouldn’t be wrong to like him or his work. That is doubly true if his sin has nothing whatsoever to do with his work. I sure hope people don’t boycott anything that I create just because I’m imperfect! 😃

Enjoy his music.

👍 I’d like to see the statistic citing that gay people have an average lifespan 20 years less than heterosexual ppl.

Why? That is terrible. To wish evil on anyone else is sinful, just as evil as the ones you condemn. 😦

Hi Andrewstx

When I said, “I’d like to see those statistics”, I meant: “I want to see those statistics, as I am sceptical that they are real”. I did not mean that I would derive pleasure from seeing them. I am actually one of the few Catholics here that does not agree with the Church’s position on gay people. I feel they should be entitled to the sacrament of marriage. Also, I’ve had close gay friends over the years. So believe you me I am not condemning them OR wishing evil on them either. 🙂

If you get those statistics they will almost certainly be from when “gay panic” was considered an actual defense.

Rephrase the question. Is it wrong to like a singer who engages in sinful behavior? The focus needs to be on the sin (homosexual behavior) and not on the person (being a homosexual) and if your support of this individual is supporting sinful behavior. A sinful singer (i.e. anyone who has sung save the Holy Mother and Christ) who doesn’t use his music (assumed here that the music itself isn’t offensive or sinful in content) to promote or actively support sinful behavior shouldn’t be an issue regardless of his sexual practices.
