Exactly! Allah translates to “God”. So why, when translating from Arabic to English everything is translated EXCEPT the word “Allah”? That is the whole point jakasaki was trying to make!!!

As another example, if in English I was writing: “God is the Supreme Being of all creation.”
And I wanted to translate that to Arabic, but wrote: God هو الاعلى يجري من جميع خلق

That is how it appears when everything except the word “Allah” is translated.

Of all the names that God has revealed himself through the Qur’an, Allah is his most preferred… I dont exactly why it is not translated to God in English translations… but I am guessing thats the reason (I could be wrong)…

Here is more info.

So then you (and/or Muhammad) would have me believe that God lied to Moses when He told him that His name was “I AM”?

Exodus 3:14-15 (emphasis mine)
God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM”; and He said, “Thus you shall say to the sons of Israel, ‘I AM has sent me to you.’”

God, furthermore, said to Moses, "Thus you shall say to the sons of Israel, 'The LORD, the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has sent me to you ’ This is My name forever, and this is My memorial-name to all generations.

Subhanallah, God does not lie… it is something God cant do…

Allah is the prsonal name of God in Arabic, like the Jews have YHWH (or something like that). So it becomes a proper Noun. The ordinary word for God in Arabic is Ilaah (ILAAH). The Muslims have been given a simple slogan of faith (Kalimah). It says LA ILAAHA ILLA ALLAH, translated into English, it says ‘There is no God but Allah.’

If I follow your method and translate Allah as God, then it would mean “There is no God but God.” Surely that would become meaningless or an ambigous sentence. Allah has many other beautiful names. They are called his attributes.

I hope that the use of the word Allah as a personal name of the One God is now understood. It need not be translated, as most of the proper nouns are never translated.

This name of God (i.e. Allah) was well known to all Arab pagans even before the time of Muhammad. Muhammad did not invent that name. The problem was that the pagans used to worship other gods beside Allah and believed that those idol gods interceded in their matters before Allah.

Muhammad got rid of those polytheistic beliefs and said that there no god except Allah. (Which the Arabs already knew).

The Jews believed the same thing. They also believed that there was only one God who did not have any partners or parts or helpers. Whatever was the name given to that One God of the Jews, it was purely a Unitarian faith. There was no part comprising the son and the holy Ghost. The Jews did not know about the son or the holy Ghost as gods.

“Allah” is not the personal name/proper noun of God in the same way that YHWH is for Jews.

Please see again:

God did not give us “Allah” as a proper noun/name for Him. Unless you are now going to argue that “Allah” means “I AM” in Arabic.

with maximum apologies, I say that Allah may not be in your books, just like YHWH, I did not see much of YHWH in the bibleNT. But Allah as the proper name is mentioned throughout Quran. Your I AM has no meaning. It is incomplete sentence. It is wrong to say that Jews did not utter the name of God. Were they ordered not to utter the name of God?? Show me where they were forbidden to utter the name of God. There cannot be any prayer without uttering the name of God.

Jesus also did not forbid his followers to utter the name of God, and he never told any one that the name of God was Jesus. At one place, Jesus said to some one “I am going to my Lord and your Lord, to my God and your God.”

So God was called I AM?? Did God also not like to utter His name?? In the Bush?? Why God would not tell his name??

You have made up a story of all that with incomplete sentences, e.g. I AM. What I am?? Nobody knows. Pardon me. Your beliefs are so complicated.

So now you are going to criticize the Old Testament and what God said to Moses!?!

Are you actually trying to tell us that this is part of the OT that is corrupted - that “Allah” actually was the name God gave us in the OT, but the Jews corrupted it and threw that part out?

:rotfl:

I must say that despite the lack of color and large fonts, this post is classic planten! 😃

Not saying anyone here is wrong, just offering my thought on the name “I AM”

Perhaps God said his name was “I AM” because he is. He exist. He is all. He doesn’t have to speak full sentences, for with just two words he can sum up what he is “I AM”

Just some food for thought. 🤷

Wow!!!
I have to say again,WOW!!!
With the postal arguments on here, I would turn to another more thoughtful, respectful religion.
While some try to actually answer the original post but confuse the issue with mysteries, others go off on tangents. If this person was lost to Buddhists or Wichans could you blame them
for not accepting the truth.

Threads tend to meander, it’s true. But, for anyone who truly wants to know what the Catholic Church teaches he can read the Catechism of the Catholic Church. And there are many good articles and resources on this very website. So, I wouldn’t put so much stock in what people write within threads. Not when inquirers don’t have to depend on them as if there were no others options. 😉

GOD has many names and belongs to the Beginnings of ALL RELIGIONS…he is ADITI, BRAHMA-ZYAUS, THE ALL, ILU, EN-SOPH, THE NAMELESS, THE ONE, AD, AD-AD, etc. I believe we as humanity have become confused about why he created us and how in our confusion we have lost his ultimate message through Christos…it was the GOOD NEWS for our salvation, not only here on the Earth during this incarnation, but, for our birthright as HUMANS created in his image, to return to him, become reabsorbed by GOD, after our death. Our incarnation is a proving time, whereby, we by our WILLS and EXAMPLES of LIVING IN GODLINESS (in ALL GOODNESS to become as OUR FATHER IS…) would bring us into direct contact with him, GOD and his DIVINE EVOLUTIONARY PLAN and DIVINE LAWS. GOD made this far easier than all religions make it today…GOD makes contact in two ways…through NATURE and through HUMANS, DIRECTLY…we are here by him, through him and for him…to PERFECT OUR SOULS and SPIRITS, so at the time of our deaths we may be found worthy, by our life’s record of MERIT and DEMERIT, to RETURN IN OUR SPIRIT, TO HIM. Praise be to GOD, our Supreme Father…this was the bottom line message given to us by Jesu Christos…it is your only goal, during this life, for GOD’S PROMISE OFIMMORTAL LIFE.

The Quran tells about the words “I AM” from the Bush. It is Allah and He says “I AM
ALLAH”. This sentence is complete. Please see it, in chapter 20, verse14, below:

**[20:8] اللّٰهُ لَاۤ اِلٰهَ اِلَّا هُوَ‌ؕ لَـهُ الْاَسْمَآءُ الْحُسْنٰى‏

[20:8] Allah — there is no God but He. His are the most beautiful names.

[20:9] ‌وَهَلْ اَتٰٮكَ حَدِيْثُ مُوْسٰٓى‌ۘ‏

[20:9] And has the story of Moses come to thee?
۔

[20:10] اِذْ رَاٰ نَارًا فَقَالَ لِاَهْلِهِ امْكُثُوْۤا اِنِّىْۤ اٰنَسْتُ نَارًا لَّعَلِّىْۤ اٰتِيْكُمْ مِّنْهَا بِقَبَسٍ اَوْ اَجِدُ عَلَى النَّارِ هُدًى‏

[20:10] When he saw a fire, he said to his family, ‘Tarry ye, I perceive a fire; perhaps I may bring you a brand therefrom or find guidance at the fire.’

[20:11] فَلَمَّاۤ اَتٰٮهَا نُوْدِىَ يٰمُوْسٰىؕ‏

[20:11] And when he came to it, he was called by a voice, ‘O Moses,
!

[20:12] اِنِّىْۤ اَنَا رَبُّكَ فَاخْلَعْ نَـعْلَيْكَ‌ۚ اِنَّكَ بِالْوَادِ الْمُقَدَّسِ طُوًىؕ‏

[20:12] ‘Verily, I am thy Lord. So take off thy shoes; for thou art in the sacred Valley of Tuwa.

[20:13] وَاَنَا اخْتَرْتُكَ فَاسْتَمِعْ لِمَا يُوْحٰى‏

[20:13] ‘And I have chosen thee; so hearken to what is revealed. ۔

[20:14] اِنَّنِىْۤ اَنَا اللّٰهُ لَاۤ اِلٰهَ اِلَّاۤ اَنَا فَاعْبُدْنِىْ ۙ وَاَقِمِ الصَّلٰوةَ لِذِكْرِىْ‏

[20:14] ‘Verily,** I am Allah****; there is no God beside Me. So serve Me, and observe Prayer for My remembrance.

[20:15] اِنَّ السَّاعَةَ اٰتِيَـةٌ اَكَادُ اُخْفِيْهَا لِتُجْزٰى كُلُّ نَفْسٍۢ بِمَا تَسْعٰى‏

[20:15] ‘Surely, the Hour is coming; I am going to manifest it, that every soul may be recompensed for its endeavour. (so that every soul may rightly be paid for its efforts.)

God is eternal, he does not need a personal name in the sense that we as humans understand it. He was before time names were meaningless before creation, there was only God, he existed, he is and he will coninue to be.

That is why God said I AM when talking to Moses. Because He is the ultimate reality, that was, is and is yet to be, He is eternal, everliving and always was. A personal name in the human sense would be meaningless in describing Him. Saying to Moses to call him I AM, shows the true magnificent nature of God as the ultimate reality by which all things are made, and serves to show his everliving, timeless nature.

Allah, as a name, is a diminishment in my opinion, of God when describing Him to men. We call God, God because He is truly God. But that his not his name, its a description, as are the titles The Lord, Father etc. It isn’t his name. That is I AM, which is truly all that he needs to show us his true glory.

As to the original question on this thread I reply.

Choose a religion in which you feel in your heart a spiritual calling, a sense of peace and happiness. Don;t choose one merely for reasons like friends or because it has flashy concerts and the associated high that brings. Go to the faith which truly shows you the peace of God.

Of course I’d say that is the Catholic Church, but in the end the choice is yours.

Please tell us what is the arabic word for god as in a mythical god?

I may have found the answer:

There was a moon god that was given the title “al-ilah” (the god) amongst the many dieties worshipped by pre-Islamic Arabs…

In fact, the Arab pagans did not consider Allah merely as one of their gods. On the contrary, they worshipped Him as the Supreme Ruler of the universe. There was no idol called ‘Allah’, though all their lesser gods were represented by idols.

So for the pagan Arab, Allah was not just one of the lesser deities to be worshipped. Rather, He was still considered the Supreme Ruler of the universe.

4islam.com/Allah.shtml

*Allah (Arabic: اﷲ, Allāh) is the standard Arabic word for “God”, derived from al-ilah, the God. The term is best known in the West for its use by Muslims as a reference to God. Arabic-speakers of all faiths, including Christians and Jews, use the word “Allah” to mean “God”. The Muslim and Christian Arabs of today have no other word for ‘God’ than ‘Allah’. In pre-Islamic Arabia, Allah was used by pagan Meccans as a reference to the creator-god, possibly the supreme deity. *

SlaveofHim-

Did you know that in Islam the only sure way to reach paradise=

9.111 Allah hath purchased of the believers their persons and their goods; for theirs (in return) is the garden (of Paradise): they fight in His cause, and slay and are slain: a promise binding on Him in truth, through the Law, the Gospel, and the Qur’an: and who is more faithful to his covenant than Allah? then rejoice in the bargain which ye have concluded: that is the achievement supreme.
