I"M SCARED. Found black mold in my home

Please pray for me. Being disabled with an autoimmune disease and more, I’ve come to hurt a lot lately and now I know why. Recently, a friend went to kill a bug in my home and his foot went through my floor. Found that I have black mold on my tiles and everywhere. Told the landlord and he shrugged it off. And haven’t done anything about it. Plus, told me it was, “regular” mold. Researched regular mold and regular mold can be harmful to you also. Don’t have a place to go and no money. I take care of many cats too and they would be lost without me. And I’ve let a friend live with me who became homeless due to the Texas floods. Their home is not habitable. Also, had several tornadoes that hurt their area.

This is a small town which has no law and the landlord gets by with all he does or doesn’t do to help his tenants. Doesn’t matter if you call the law, or helpful agencies, they don’t help. I’ve called Environmentalists to come check my home and they charge $500.00 just to check. Called Universities in town away from me to see if they would help and they aren’t in session. Forgot it was still summer vacation.

I’ve read what mold can do to a person and noticed my left eyelid drooping. And my pains hurt more. Mold can cause many dire symptoms and consequences.

Please, please pray I get help in all areas that we need and that I am not worse off healthwise from breathing mold in five years. I’m totally, utterly scared.

You need to get out of there. I had this with the house bfore this one and I was far on down the black mould disease scale; I have auto immune issues too.
First, stop panicking. That will make your symptoms worse. And invalidate any attempts to help

Is there one room in the house that is clear? If so . live in that.
The house here is also getting some ( Irish houses are prone to this) and i am spraying it with l bleach. Kills the spores.

Wear a mask in the house. Pharmacies have them very cheap. That will give immediate ease.

STOP reading about it!

Is there a housing authority there who wil help you find somewhere else?

HI and thank you so much for being so informative. I had to read about it to make sure of the symptoms and stopped. I was a researcher for the state, so it’s still in me to do so. I have masks because of another problem. I’m staying in the part of the house that is fairly clear. Trying to move is hard. Have to have money to do that, packers, trucks and a place. Hard here because of Katrina and the West Explosion. People being housed which I wouldn’t have it other anyway. So, housing is low…

I’m fairly certain your town, no matter how small, has ordinances to address this. Even if they don’t, The State of Texas does.
One such Ordinance that addresses this is Property code 92.052 LANDLORD’S DUTY TO REPAIR OR REMEDY. It requires a landlord to make a diligent effort to repair a condition if you place in writing a notice to the landlord at the place your rent is normally paid; and you are not delinquent in your rent; and if the condition materially affects the physical health or safety of an ordinary tenant. You also must not have caused the dangerous condition through your own negligence.
Pursuant to Sec. 92.053(b), if the landlord does not provide you with a written explanation for delay in perfoming a duty to repair or remedy on or before the fifth day after receiving a written demand from you for repairs, then the burden falls on him to prove that a dilgent effort to repair has been made. If he fails to do that, you may be entitled to terminate your lease.
Other sections of the property code may apply. i urge you to consult with an attorney to make sure your rights are upheld.

Bleach can be toxic and cause health problems. Vinegar, in contrast, is 100% healthy to use and kills mold (but doesn’t remove the stain, but kills it). From the maids.com (professional trained maids)
Vinegar is a mild acid which can kill 82% of mold species. (Baking soda is often used along with vinegar for killing different species of mold.) To kill mold: Use white distilled vinegar and pour it into a spray bottle without watering it down. Spray the vinegar onto the moldy surface and leave it to sit for an hour. maids.com/blog/3-non-toxic-ways-to-clean-mold/
 
Praying for you. It may be an opportunity to go somewhere better. Arm yourself with information and ideas so you can make the best choice. Where i live you can claim moving expenses as a deduction.

You have to move out of there for your health. Long term exposure to mold will effect you in many ways. Even if it is into a smaller home. I know you are attached to the cats, if you can’t relocate them with you, they will move on to where someone else will care for them. As far as I know, toxic mold can grow rapidly. In extreme cases, the Board of Health would declare a home unfit to live in. I agree that you will find a better place. Praying for your health and that you and your houseguests will find suitable housing. Also, praying to St. Francis for the welfare of the cats. God bless.
 
Definitely contact the proper authorities. Try whatever you can to remedy the situation. With your autoimmune disease, the last thing you need is harmful mold where you eat, sleep, and live.

Sheila, would it be possible to have a conversation with your tenant looking for a solution that suits you both?
It might be to his best interest and yours to seek an arrangement proven that he may want you to stay too?
It can only take a couple of hours,maybe a morning, to get your home free of mould and ventilated?

Is it possible that you can just stay outside in a Garden ,library,somewhere while this is done?

Each to his own then! I am senstive to vinegar… Bleach kills all, fast and dead!

The best first source I’ve found for the problems with mold is Mom’s Aware. Before you whip out the bleach or pull anything up, please read Andrea Fabry’s site: momsaware.org/

Also, see if you can’t talk to your local health department. But, you may want to find a place to crash temporarily before you do because if the health department gets involved they may condemn the building. (If they do it is for very good reason. If this is toxic mold, you might not be able to stay.)

Don’t panic, but be cautious. Before you start pouring bleach and other such chemicals, this might make the situation worse. Some molds don’t cower to bleach. Really.
