, I have been listening to priests of the F.S.S.P.X. and F.S.S.P. in public prayer outside the Mass, comparing them to other holy priests. Very often, traditionalist priests say opening prayers at conferences, retreats, speeches, etc. in the vernacular language. Fr. Ripperger of the F.S.S.P. regularly says a “Hail, Mary” in English before and after his non-homily talks.
How common was the practice of praying in vernacular outside the Liturgy before 1965? Did priests always lead non-liturgical prayer in vernacular before the Council? Has this always been in practice? I’d really like to know this, because at my bedside I mentally pray my ‘favourites’ in Latin, but I wouldn’t at all mind praying them in English. Many of them are very beautiful in the 1962 translation!
Any ideas?
