I met Cardinal Dolan last night and this is what I said to him

Finally, the night had come to meet Timothy Cardinal Dolan! For over a month, I’ve been ecstatic about getting to meet him at the Catholic Charities of Orange County dinner in New York held last night. How excited I was able to approach him and say a few words!

And guess what comes out of my mouth? “Uh… Hi!” :eek: What was I thinking!!! :banghead:

I didn’t say “What an honor to meet you, your Eminence”; not “May God bless you!”; not “We love you!” Anything would have been better than my momentary, yet complete lack of knowledge of the entire English language!

He smiled so lovingly and shook my hand! I’m still so excited to have had a chance to shake his hand and be in the same room! May God bless Cardinal Dolan!

Lesson learned: Rehearse your lines!! Rehearse, rehearse, rehearse. Write in on your hand if you have to! 👍

What you managed to say was at least better than, “hummina, hummina, hummina…Ed Norton?”

(hoping you’ll get the reference to the Honeymooners, when Ralph blanked out on an answer)

He seems to be very down to earth, so I’m sure your most eloquent use of the word “hi” was just fine with him. 😃

Actually, when I think of people that I would like to just sit down, relax and have a beer with, Cardinal Dolan is right there at the top of that list. There aren’t to many Cardinals I would say that about!😉

When I met our Bishop for the first time,I know I looked like I was catching flies (mouth wide open I bet)…then uttered, Hello Sir.
 
I don’t remember what I said to Cardinal Dolan but I have a picture with him. Not a stiff pose but a casual scene where he has his arm around me saying something that I don’t remember. Probably small talk.
 
That’s hilarious!

Have to warn you though, rehearsing doesn’t always work.

First time I met my bishop, a similar thing happened. Down on the left knee, kiss the ring, I said to myself many times. When the moment came, some wires crossed in my brain. I started to go down on the right knee, stopped midway, and in a slightly bent position shook his hand with my left. He looked a bit puzzled, but smiled politely. I was so embarrassed. 😊
 
I might have asked about his wanting to bless Obama and the Dem convention. Mind you they probably needed the blessing they didn’t receive; maybe they’d have thought twice about the stuff they’re now trying to pull.

Me, too 👍 Cardinal Dolan will be the keynote speaker at the upcoming Eucharistic Congress our diocese is sponsoring and to say I am thrilled with the possibility of meeting His Eminence is THE understatement of the year LOL.
 
I met Cardinal Dolan at a Mass and luncheon afterwards for my Bishop. I work for my diocese, and was fortunate enough to serve Cardinals Dolan & Egan, as well as 12 other Bishop’s from around NY state. I have a picture of myself & Cardinal Dolan, and found memories of the introductions that my Bishop gave me. I have been blessed to be able to serve my local Church in this way, and can say that Cardinal Dolan is one of the funniest, wittiest, most deeply spiritual, down-to-earth and genuine men I have ever met! 😃

i live in milwaukee wisconsin and when i began lean towards being catholic his voice was the first “catholic” voice i heard. he had 30 second radio spots at Christmas and it piqued my interest.
anyway, if i ever met cardinal Dolan i would want to tell him all that…and more… but i would probably just say ummmm…hi? :o
 
Just imagine what you would have said if you met Pope Francis. I’d probably forget how to speak.
 
I have met a number of cardinals and bishops. In fact I see my bishop several times a week, usually by the elevator. I usually just strike up a casual conversation. I met one cardinal on a coffee line at a conference. A number of people were fussing and telling him to go ahead of them. He said no and stayed in line in front of me. We talked about my bishop and about the talk he just gave to the group I was with. He was very casual and friendly and that is how our conversation went.
 
Probably the most embarrassing moment for me was when my daughter was confirmed 25 years ago. When the Bishop confirmed her, she was so happy that she threw herself at him and gave him a huge hug! I wanted to slink out of the church. But what did the Bishop do? After regaining his composure he gave her a huge hug back!

She didn’t see anything improper in her action and blamed it on the Holy Spirit. 😃
