There will be someone at your parish that will train you and tell you everything you need to know. Thank you for stepping up to do this!

Encourage boys and young men to become altar boys (technically no such thing as altar server). This is not to say women can’t do these liturgical functions well. . . . The role of altar boys assisting the priest had a direct impact on future priestly vocations. The fact that girls are doing it chases boys away more often than not (this is certainly the case at the various diocesan parishes near me). This is also why Traditional Catholic and all Eastern Catholic Churches only allow men/boys to serve at the altar. It’s not about pitting one sex against another but is about the life of the Church (fostering vocations).

May I suggest wearing shoes that blend in, and covering your mouth if you yawn? They are my pet peeves. Consider that you are “on display” a lot of the time.

Yes, and in that same vein, act like you’re interested in being there! I’ve seen too many slouchy, off-in-space, can’t even get the frown off their face servers. It sends the wrong message to your peers for sure, among other things.

Here in the Philippines females are not permitted to be an altar server or an EMHC. Only males may perform these roles.

My #1 serving tip: Obviously you will be trained and taught everything your right supposed to do, whatever you do, even if it happens to be the wrong thing, always make it look like that is what you are supposed to be doing.

  1. Plain footwear (no fancy sneakers)
  2. Make sure what you’re wearing underneath doesn’t show through your altar server clothes (masses aren’t supposed to be sponsored by Nike)
  3. Try to work out what the priest needs before he needs it - the way to do this is by paying attention to what’s happening in the mass and what the priest is doing

Relax, and don’t be afraid of messing up.

While serving Mass as an 8-year-old altar boy for Bishop John L. Spalding of Peoria, Fulton Sheen dropped a wine cruet on the floor and it shattered. After the Mass, Bishop Spalding spoke to the frightened boy and made two bold predictions about him. First, the bishop said he would one day study at Louvain in Belgium; second, he told the young Sheen, “someday you will be just as I am.”

Bishop Spalding was correct about the future great Bishop Sheen.
